Sweat tears and blood of an athlete
shyammukundan10 September 2019
"Finals " Malayalam movie. This is a fictional movie presentation, inspired from the unfortunate road traffic accident and death of national cycling champion Shiny Siles at Manjeri, during the state road championship race, in 2002. This movie comes in the genere of sports drama. Malayalam movies are portraying sports and personalities, more often.

Director Arun has vividly exposed the plight of our upcoming sports persons, their poor living facilities, their training insufficiencies, physical and mental abuse by the coaches and federations. When the champion says 'every medal we win, pays the bank loans' ... it sums up the pathetic situations.

Rajisha Vijayan as Alice the cycling prodigy has lived the character. Her father, athlete of yesteryears, now a coach , who went to bad fame due to a misunderstanding, is caricatured very well by Suraj Venjaranmood. Niranjan as the very loving, boy friend of the cycling prodigy also did well.

Even though a sports movie, the focus is more on the drama part. 8 on 10 for this collection of unpredictable sequences of events. First half was smooth and developed on cycling and the champion and her villagers. Interval was sudden bolt from the heavens, and a shock. Second half is a comeback wave of these simpletons.

Must watch... Champions are not made overnight. Audience usually fail to recognise their efforts, behind these championships. Champions shed a lot of sweat, tears and blood .. to reach that position. We should support them.

I had stopped reviewing movies on IMDB for a while. But after seeing 'Finals' (on TV) recently, seeing just 3 reviews for the movie on IMDB, I think I need to make a note here. To be frank, 'Finals' is one of the best movie of its kind and deserves a big applause. I couldn't watch it without tears ..that was the impact the movie is creating in us..so don't miss it...a movie of this kind is rarely seen (made) in our industry. Niranj & Rajisha was excellent with their performance..and Suraj was impeccable...Suraj continuously wonders me showing how terrific a actor he is...take a bow. The songs also played a factor in raising the spirit of the movie...Must watch.

Another Gem from Suraj

Warning: Spoilers
It is disheartening to hear that this movie didn't get as much "traction" (uninentional pun) as the other movies that released along with this. I know that, despite seeing posters everywhere, I didn't watch this in theaters.

Kudos to Rajisha for taking up this role and delivering it with aplomb. I am not sure if she went through training for the role, but she did seem the part or at least made the audience believe in her passion for cycling. Niranjan Raju was kind of a letdown since his casting seemed to be a nepotism plug. I wish he could have trained/worked more towards his role. His fitness level seemed miles far from the competition. Even better would have been to cast someone with actual experience with track events. In addition to this, the younger leads needed some polish with their chemistry and delivery of dialogues.

But above all this stands Suraj Venjaramood with his tour de force performance that beats everything and everyone else. Barely appearing in the posters, this movie was carried by Suraj's skill. Using his shortcomings for the plot, Suraj transitioned from a doting father to a rebellious coach and then to a towering mentor with masterful ease.

Well-Made Motivational Drama with Terrific Performances / 7 Stars

I enjoyed watching Finals, a well-made sports movie that is part motivational, part sentimental. It focuses on the degree of determination that sportspersons are required to harbour if they are to win, as well as on the politics that mar the rise and appreciation of sports talent in India. It has the usual clinks of a sports drama but performances (mainly by Venjaaramoodu), camera work, and overall screenplay (with some good use of flashbacks) make it a delightful watch with family. Definitely one of the better films of 2019.

This is a nice movie for those interested in sports-and want to see more sports areas represented by india and more people interested in sports -and possibly getting more medals for india in the future Olympics-and also make india more confident of bidding for 2032 Olympics or beyond-this movie mainly about cycling-rajisha also a singer I presume-also about difficulties some sportspersons face face in india shot in one very lovely place in kerala-idukki a place worth a visit for foreign tourists and indian and local tourists within kerala.
