A Tear and a Smile
lightheartedbeing20 May 2019
Khalil Gibran who wrote The Prophet, also wrote A Tear and a Smile. This show was a reflection of that very human dilemma as we face the darkness and the light in life. I've thought this show was good all season, interesting medical drama as they go, nice premise a bit unusual, lots well-crafted characters, good challenges for them. This season finale which wraps up several plot lines, at least for now, was outstanding and really well done. Peter Horton directing has a great touch. The final lines of the show were so on point it was amazing. All season I've found the writing excellent. This episode's plot line with the man dealing with PTSD as well as his doctor's professional challenge was one fantastic story line that underlay the others. The difficulties people face who work in public service, especially the medical side along with the insanity of insurance companies that dominate what can and can't be done, the expenses... So smart, dedicated people for the most part deliver the best they can given the larger situation, and that they have moments that are impossible and drives them a bit crazy is a sane reaction to the insanity. The show leaves some unknowns, and I hope we get another season with all the current cast (!) to follow this really good story telling further.

That speech at the end hit me real hard. I can't believe I will have to wait to see what is going to happen. When it happened I stopped what I was doing and stared on what is happening the remaining 2 minutes

OMFG

I wasn't ready. I really wasn't ready. Putting aside the fact that Dr Bloom has already illegally practiced as a Doctor when in rehab, she does it again unexpectedly. This is a rollercoaster of an episode with a major twist. I have struggled with this program for some unbelievable storylines and writing but this one was a solid episode. It was a great way to end the season.

Amazed and stunned

My husband and I have watched this show together. I am the emotional one. He reacted as I did and had to rewatch the end of the show.

Maybe the producers take poetic license in some small facts. It is after all a television show. One of the most emotionally driven that has been aired in a while.

Thankyou.

I look forward to next season.

Finally

I've written some sincerely sarcastic reviews of various episodes, this season-and while i still stand by them, this episode was straight up great. These are the kind of plot lines which drew me into the first 10 episodes. Started to get a little thin during eps 11-18, but the first season ended strong.

The performances in this episode, were top notch

Because I'm coming to this late, I know Max and family survive. Still, season one has kept me interested in how season two manifests itself.

I've said all along, this show skews to the overdramatic when the storylines focus too much on the extras, as compared to the actual cast. Sometimes, it tackles too many variants. There's a lot of cheesy dialogue. It can be sappy and unrealistic, and yet I genuinely enjoy the issues they try to address. Let's see if I'm feeling the same at the end of season two.

As a Canadian with socialized health-care, you can tell this was written in a time of Trump-and a GOP Senate. There's a lot of frank disclosure regarding some uncomfortable health-care facts. Some might accuse the show of pushing an agenda, and we can refer to those people, as complete idiots.

Health care should be an enshrined right.

On to season two.

We don't know for sure who is under the blanket. Drug mule/thief? Paramedic? Doctor? Or wife. Soon we shall know.

For those that love this show, let us hope it works out for the major players. I am hopeful for the drug mule/thief.

Iggy storyline was more believable.

A vertical C-section at home and both of them live?? Congrats on delivering a 3 month old! Also, they'd previously told us the previa resolved and all of a sudden it's back? I assume they mean the placenta was abrupting, but why consult an actual OB to get those details right? Just do the most dramatic thing you can think of. I generally hate depictions of any birth stuff on American shows and movies, because as a birth worker, I end up ruining the scene for everyone else because of how ridiculous it almost always is. Iggy's storyline was pretty good, as was Floyd's, but the baby delivery stuff was absolutely absurd. 0/10 for Max's storyline this episode, 3/10 for the episode overall, because that amount of drama is just so ridiculous and predictable for American television.

Really? We are in the middle of Manhattan and they want to tell us that someone almost dies because of the Ambulance is not arriving in time after we are half way into the episode! I live in New York and that is totally unbelievable! The worst season finale of a otherwise very good show!

Why why why?

You know this is why I like the British shows. They give you 6 to 8 episodes per season and at the end of the season you get closure. Then they come back for a next season with a different storyline, ends it at the end of that season, and starts the next season with a different storyline (see Line of Duty for example or the European show - The Break).

It's what I don't like with American shows - these stupid cliffhangers. Was it necessary for New Amsterdam? I would watch this show even if the season ended with them sitting in the hospital cafeteria drinking terrible coffee and just chatting, like how Blue Bloods ends each episode, having dinner and chatting.

But no. The writers here felt it necessary to end with a "blood bath", with a body being covered at the end, and leaving us "hanging", not knowing who died. I mean, we were never shown Dr Sharpe. So was it she who died? And why do we have to wait after the summer to find out. I love the show but I hate these cliffhangers and feel that they often are totally unnecessary. Please take a page from the British or European shows, why dontcha!
