Interesting, very thematic
rocafellaceo18 June 2022
Never heard of the original manga or the movie, I saw this is in my spotlight so I decided to check it out and It's actually pretty good. It's a little predictable at times and sometimes I wish the characters weren't giving speeches every 10 mins, but the plot is interesting, animation is good, voice acting is amazing and I like the soundtrack. Also, It's deals with a lot of themes and philosophies in each episode, which I think is one of the more interesting parts of the series.

You should check it out.

Good mix of action and mythology
KLG2321 July 2022
Really enjoyed this. Good animation, excellent voice acting, and plenty of action. A fun mix of characters and a concept that has a lot of potential to explore many myths and legends. Looking forward to seeing where it goes next.

Bad, bad, definitely bad
Watchcelebi2 July 2022
It's a bad copy of 98's Spriggan. The lines, character motivations, drawings, dialogs were terrible. Feminine spriggan, Netflix is really boring. Okay, this issue may be really important to you, but it is really, really, really pointless, shallow, vulgar to give this message in every leading role. I hope you give up, I hope you leave the old and beautiful things alone. It's a waste of time, don't watch it. 98 is much better. People can go back there.

Compared To The Film
friendandmachine19 June 2022
The original Spriggan (1989) is my favourite anime. This new remake is a good series although it deviates from the film slightly.

The series has removed the seriousness of the original film. The main character is now happy and very confident compared to reserved and tormented.

Episode two is a retelling of the original film.

They included a heap of cliché anime tropes that did not exist in the original film such as:
  • The loud, angry anime girl
  • Calling out kicks and punches like a Pokemon ability
  • Having characters explain plot instead of showing the audience

Pros:
  • Some great moments faithful to the original film
  • Great action scenes with violence and mature themes
  • Way better than 90% of Netflix anime shows

Cons:
  • A few episodes are terrible
  • Poor dialogue writing
  • Weird 3d models for monsters shot in a completely different frame rate as the series.

Good anime
zinemamoviemedia28 June 2022
I watched this because I read one of the manga's episodes. It's good and I also like it because it is short. But in one time I also feel it's like old anime or feel like release not to the right time. But overall I like the story.

Good short anime
nicholascporti10 September 2022
While this anime doesn't bring anything new to the table it does all the basic anime tropes very well. The protagonist is fun and quirky while also endearing at times, but where the best part of this anime lies is in the fight scenes. While the animation doesn't compare to something like Demon Slayer it is done very well. All the fights are clear and drawn very well. The choreography is amazing and the fight scenes are always tense and never overstay their welcome. While this anime does have a good bit of CGI usage it actually looks very good. Every once in a while it will look out of place but even most anime purists would be happy with how good it looks. If you just want to watch an anime for a good story and some fun fights, this is a great choice.

Off to a pretty good start

Never saw the original movie. I'm enjoying the plot with the ancient civilization tech narrative. Voice acting and sound design are well produced. Action sequences are exciting. I'll continue watching and hope for a second season.

Metal Gear Shounen
residentgrigo2 July 2022
The anime cut Yoshino out of the cold open that is based on the manga´s pilot and made it almost incomprehensible due to how much was cut from that mission. Everything else on the other hand is one of the most accurate adaptations in recent memory. The story is simply transplanted from the early 90s into 2022 and the Legend of the Mask arc that stretches from Chap 5 to 16 is MIA as of now as it is too long to fit into 45 minutes. Also missing is the 2nd half of Vol 4 and all of 5 and 6 as ep 6 is based on the first half of Vol 7. Its post-credit stinger sets up the rest of Vol 4 so David Production is clearly committed to adapting the whole series if we get lucky. The ONA is gorier than the other versions and every cent of the production budget that was missing from JoJo Part 6 ended up here. The audiovisual presentation is top-notch! The show has the same issues the Shounen original has but this is the best Metal Gear "adaptation" we will ever see so I won´t bother complaining. I wonder if Kojima´s team ever talked about how much they borrowed from the manga? 2 more seasons pls. 7/10.

Netflix please continue this series!!!
kruss-3726619 June 2022
Easily one of the best anime's Netflix has put out, you can definitely tell this was a well funded project. A large majority of Netflix's anime series lose my interest with a couple of episodes, but this kept me captivated throughout the series. The action scenes are amazing and the amount of gore brought me back to 80's anime vibes. If you are a fan any shonen jump, this is definitely on par with them. I really hope Netflix continues this series because they put out so many forgettable series just for content and this is actually one that they put the effort and funds into. Honestly it's probably my favorite on Netflix.

average netfilx anime
loloimdb30 June 2022
Well, for starters, I should point out that the animation and design are great, that's not always the case in anime.

Appart from that, the pitch is quite interesting: an agency in charge of recovering and ensuring that ancient artifacts and tech are in good hands/harmless.

Unfortunately, the show is very procedural and there's a real issue with the characters that lack personality, and there's something wrong with consistency and storyline development. There's no main plot, no main villains nor links between the episodes. You could watch the episodes in any order, that wouldn't really matter. The last episode is kind of the same as the first one, no plot development, no season 2 tease.

I suspect that Netflix made this anime for the fans who already know the story, but didn't really care about anything else.... Money, money money!

Dull
koinbergalexander5 July 2022
I think it was well animated, the main characters strength varries depending on who is opponent is for some reason. Introduction into different characters are almost to none. I had no idea a movie existed after some research and I have not watched it yet. Series, lore and everything had alot of potential.

Probably one of the best new anim series I've ever watched on Netflix. I know it's based off some other series or movie with the same name... just never heard of it. Well worth the watch imo if you're looking for something entertaining.

Good Fun!!!
ichiniikunsan26 June 2022
This anime series is a short OVA collection of SPRIGGAN episodes based off an older manga with the same name. Each one follows a brand new storyline in which ARCAM and other political/ government groups wage battle over collecting ancient artifacts.

This series is a lot of fun with great fighting animation, a protagonist that seems overpowered but actually struggles a lot in some fights (awesome!), funny character interactions and just all-around interesting scenes.

SPRIGGAN is just pure fun to watch! I enjoyed it a lot, actually ended up binging it all in one go. The animation is also really good and fluid!

Bad writing
zenazure8 February 2023
This is not a full review I couldn't get past the first episode. It's really ham fisted. Instead of having the air of mystery behind the creation of the ark from the original movie (was it god? Was it aliens? We'll never know type of writing) it's a very direct ancient peoples did it. The mystery is just kinda left out narratively and instead foisted on some peoples which presumably the "organization" knows everything about? It's really weak. I can understand a BPRD/Hellboy style show, but then write that and not redo a bunch of narrative from spriggan? Instead we lose all the mysterious style and charm of the original somewhat silly action flick style with hardcore animation and are left with a very overt bad narrative, and "oh look remember the main character"? I'm willing to gamble that all the shows character building just got entirely thrown out to make the show a safer bet too. That's just based on how the dialogue in the first 10 minutes before I dipped out. Anyway hope it's not that bad, but it sure looks that way based on the reviews.

Ps go see the original movie it had a really slick animation team to back up good writers and from what I remember a pretty cool soundtrack to boot.

This brought me back to the height of 80"s anime.

I enjoyed the move many years ago and now now the Netflix oav. It hit a sweet spot for me. Will wait for more episodes and hope Netflix makes more. It was an old school action adventure ride.

Netflix does not understand anime
vtortola22 June 2022
It is sad, but the original movie had a better tone, and I always wanted to be a more extended story like Evangelion.

But this Netflix series is a cheap usage of the movie characters and story. From magic forests to very chatty villains ... it is a showcase of anime cliches, including mechas and "oriental" fighters.

As with cowboy bebop, Netflix please stop.

10 to combat the ridiculous low ratings by some
worksmart-5850625 July 2022
In truth i gave it an 8. It's actually not an original idea, as I found out after researching it, but the entire premise seems incredibly original when compared to so much trash being produced these days.

The show teaches, and uses ancient stories, mythology and artifacts to give the audience something to ponder. It makes you question what things like Noah's Ark really were in reality (assuming they really existed of course), unlike most brainless anime like Vinland Saga interested only in slaughter and battles.

It didn't reinvent the wheel, but it's at least something different to watch and enjoy. Also loved how each episode is 45 minutes. Really hoping for more seasons.

Different than the film, but more accurate to the source material!
rookscastle26 July 2023
A lot of the reviews apparently don't realize this is an adaption of a Manga that was released back in the late 1980s. People mention it's not as dark as some series and they didn't understand the juxtaposition of high tech and ancient technology. This series PERFECTLY retells the stories in the original Manga source material. The main character IS a late teenager and he has a wry sense of humor, even in the midst of some pretty serious action/danger. Unlike a LOT of anime released which is based on Manga, and takes liberties with the storytelling, this version of Spriggan is an excellent animated version. The original feature film only covered one chapter of the manga, and this series literally takes the manga chapter by chapter and adapts it. While the 3D CG animation Isn't as rich in depth as the original feature film animation, it IS quite a bit more accurate to the designs of the source material. I hope this series did well enough for the producers to continue making more chapters/episodes. There's lots more ancient mysteries to discover and ancient technology to recover!

The epitome of meh
mrsatyre27 June 2022
Just like the movie which preceded it, this series leaves one wondering why anyone bothered. It's full of anime stereotypes and plots that came and went 20+ years ago (and they haven't improved with age). The Akira-heavy influence is still strong, but lacks a distinct gravitas of its own to pull it off. Cheesy dialog and silly action sequences are the nails in the coffin of mediocrity.

I like you from long ago.
sitez-7258622 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
You can see the quest and success of animation towards the understanding of combat methods and movements. It can be seen that there are multiple people mixed with men and women. It seems that the face is also pasted.

In addition, there is artificial intelligence in the work, and you can understand that it is doing voice reaction. Permission to attack is probably in this voice. It may be one of the ideals for weapons of war. The declaration also contained the ideal of attack, and surprisingly there was justice. The manga is completed, but if you do a sequel, it will be released instead of sealed. It's expansive.

Closer to the source material isn't always the better choice
alex_with_a_P26 June 2023
I've read the original mangas back then, they were called STRIKER here in Europe. And although it's been a while I read them I can confirm that this is very close to the source material. The designs are a bit more 90's and there is overall more comedy in this, which was a staple back then when stories became too dark (even in mangas like GUNM - Battle Angel Alita you got comedy moments sprinkled throughout the story).

The problem is that the manga books weren't outstanding in terms of their stories. There's a reason the books kinda got forgotten over the years. The stories are very episodic with no real overall arc or conclusion. The characters are all paper-thin. The only thing the manga had going was the magnificent artwork from Ryoji Minagawa. Well, the OVA doesn't have that unfortunately, since it's mostly 3D animation with a little bit of 2D action moments here and there. So the episodes are faithful to dialogues and characters, and that's pretty much the problem. Because they just incorporated the flaws from the books without any improvement.

The only thing they extended or bothered to change were the action scenes. And those get pretty dull after a while. The 3d is too stiff sometimes, the camera movements feel stale too, therefore it lacks a lot of dynamic cinematography. And full disclosure, I only watched the first two episodes, and I'm not sure if I will continue , being aware of the episodic structure and weak stories.

Comparisons to the movie from 1998 arise naturally. And although I never was a fan of the movie either (especially the character designs are ugly) at least it had better 2d animation going for it and they tried telling a bigger story. Both adaptions have their flaws and I can not really recommend them. Maybe to people who love to see some good action should maybe check out the movie. This Netflix series left me a bit bored.

I'd like to see who bank-rolled this mess...
divemabini29 September 2023
...because I bet it was the Chinese government.

Yet another in a long line of supposedly Japanese animation products that have an incredibly biased anti-U. S. slant. This one is so over the top, I am not kidding, it must have been funded by the PLA. They try to get cute, and throw the Russians into the mix, in the hope that the viewer is misdirected into thinking this is a good guy civilian agency versus the evil superpowers of the world kind of story. But the veneer is so thin it is laughable. This is clearly an anti-American propaganda hit piece paid for by some unnamed "outside" entity.

And don't get me started on the ridiculous fight scenes where the adversaries monologue to one another over thousands of bullets and hundreds of explosions. Truly groan worthy.

Avoid.

Competently animated infantile exposition fantasy
RogerBorg12 July 2023
The art, animation, music, foley and effects are workmanlike enough. The people making this knew what they were doing, they just didn't have a compelling reason to do it.

The plot, as such, is just the thinnest of fetch-quests and peril-porn linking together a series of "Must! Defeat! New! Super! Foe!" teenage fantasy-fulfilment fight scenes and damsel rescuing.

The characters are comically thin archetypes with no depth or motivation beyond what the instant plot requires. The English dub in particular is phoned in by the most mediocre of jobbing voice actors who don't even bother trying to add any subtlety or nuance.

Every line is pure exposition, of the "Now I will tell you all my plans and my powers, but that shall not avail you as I will surely defeat you, Spriggan!" (dies)

And that's really all we get for 6 episodes. Enjoy it for what it is, but please don't pretend that it's anything more than a childishly written snuff serial.

Clichéd, boring, looks like a parody
kams12019 June 2022
Seriously these guys have just mixed all the current tropes, with 0 taste, no originality whatsoever.

Take some mecha, add a little "ancient civilization tech" here and there, add a twist of stupid evil characters with 0 depth, and there you have it.

That's Spriggan for you ladies and gentlemen!

Couldn't even finish the first episode for how blatant this all was.
