Worth a watch

It does take you along but tends to do so slowly. However , you would like it if you stay till the end. They are some scenic places in the movie which would add to the melange.

Midsommar + The Wicker Man + HP
PedroPires9012 March 2021
Midsommar + The Wicker Man + HP Lovecraft = I'm on it!

It's a good movie with potential to be much more. Some good moments, beautiful scenario, good atmosphere, a really great ending, always great Barbara, the main girl does a good job, but, unfortunately the main actor was not that convincing. It's a bit repetitive (too many dreams), but I found it better than most people say and worth a watch.

Rather good actually

Warning: Spoilers
It has a lot of lovecraftian elements in this movie. I was almost about to not watch it but it hooked me right at the start. It's a bit slow but I think that is what adds to the mystery. As for the ending I kind of expected the "twist" but it left me with a whole bunch of questions.

Mad at myself for sticking with it
PsychoBeard66628 July 2021
I usually give up on movies like this after 20 minutes but it felt like it was building to something great and cosmic so I stayed the course.

It doesn't go anywhere, nothing happens and it isn't worth your time.

3/10 for the pretty location.

Leave the location out of it

As a Norwegian I'm offended. I can accept the lovecraftian twist which in no way relates to Norwegian folklore, but the lack of understanding of Norwegian culture, way of speaking or relation between humans are unacceptable. They have too many Norwegians on cast to let this slide. The way they speak (words used) and relate to each other makes the movie utterly unrealistic or relatable. I wish the story was strong enough to disregard its flaws in presenting an obviously unknown culture.

Much ado about nothing
bananaspider11 February 2021
Here we have a tale where it's kind of slow at the beginning, then gets a little more dramatic and you're expecting a climactic conclusion...but then you get nothing.

So much potential to be something bigger...
paul_haakonsen10 February 2021
Well, initially I didn't know that the 2020 movie "Sacrifice" was a Lovecraftian movie, so that was quite the nice surprise when that dawned upon me as I was watching the movie.

I hadn't heard about "Sacrifice" before now in 2021, as I had the opportunity to sit down to watch the movie. And it was initially because of the movie's cover and the fact that it had Barbara Crampton on the cast list that I sat down to watch this movie.

The storyline, as written by Andy Collier, Paul Kane and Tor Mian, definitely have some interesting aspects to it, but ultimately the movie settled itself into a slump, from which it never recovered. The movie just went into auto-pilot mode, and it reflected poorly on the movie as a whole. There was just simply too little of any overly interest happening throughout the course of the movie.

It should be said that directors Andy Collier and Tor Mian managed to capture a great atmosphere in the movie and managed to present a storyline that was laced with a sense of cosmic dread, but the ending of the movie was just too predicable and mundane, and that dragged the movie down.

"Sacrifice" has a good ensemble of casted actors and actresses. I do like watching Barbara Crampton in movies, but having her portraying a Norwegian woman was just out of the realm of believable options, especially since her accent was all over the place and never settling on a single specific accent; sometimes it sounded Irish, other times American, and a few times oddly twisted Scandinavian. So it just ruined so much of the movie having her accent fly all over the place.

Visually then "Sacrifice" was adequate. But if you are expecting a movie that is crammed with special effects, where you get to see one or more of the Great Old Ones, then you will be sorely mistaken. Sure, you get to see some nice carved idols and interesting amulets, and even a tentacle or two, but that was about it. So it was somewhat disappointing.

Sure, "Sacrifice" is a watchable movie, but it was ultimately not a memorable movie, nor a particularly great foray into the realm of the Mythos that H.P. Lovecraft created.

My rating of "Sacrifice" ends on a very bland and mediocre five out of ten stars.

You'll get used to it.

Warning: Spoilers
Isaac (Ludovic Hughes) returns to an isolated Norwegian island to claim his inheritance as his mother just passed. It is Isaac's old home which he left when he was five on the night of his father's murder. Isaac quickly adapts to his surroundings while his pregnant wife (Sophie Stevens) just wants to return to the US as she is haunted by bad dreams. Note: They don't sing "Ja Ja Ding Dong" in the bar.

You could see this shaping up like "Wicker Man" as they all do. I think the story would have been interesting with a proper screen play. Acting was uneven.

Guide: F-word. Nudity (Johanna Adde Dahl)

I guessed the "twist" ending :( you probably will too
rodbone12310 February 2021
This movie tries to slowly build up to a regrettably foreseeable and deeply unsatisfactory climax. Pretty views only go so far and don't make up for a boring and pointless plot. Go for a walk instead.

feeling obliged to...
ops-525359 February 2021
Watch this norwegian based mysterious horror thriller since im norwegian, left me in the end with bland feelings the story is short and repetitive dreamlike horror that materialize in a pretty twisted end. and the start of the story you see a bloodcovered panicking lady, waking up her son fleeing their house and hauls a boat to ship them away from something bad and sinister...

its a film with vast fjordlandscapes, narrow roads and rather peculiar inhabitants of rednecks community at an island i guess in the nortern parts of west norway. its grell, rainy and cold as usual and when the 15 years ago fleeing son comes back with his heavy pregnant wife, youll sense that the house is built on an evil lot. so if you come to norway for holyday, stay away from the most desolate firth communities cause they tend to be druide driven or extremely religious with the word of the bible as a guideline...he-he

its a small cast movie a bland of norwegian extras and smaller parts, they do speak english, but i tend to be nauseaus when the american/british actors take a mouthfull of norwegian æ ø å words, terrible and wrecks the film hollistically, almost 99.8% percent of norwegians do understand basic 5000 words vocabulary ... but it made me laugh.

otherwise its a resurgens of repetitive dreams that marks the plot, pretty nice but may become boring for the real horrormystery nerd. productionwise its no much glitches, some of the camera techniques are brilliant, and the musical score feel like a thorn in my eardrum, but it works darn well anyway.

even though i love to live in the lowest /flattest parts of norway where the highest hill is 132 moh and still being a hill when descending i do fall in grace of the natural beauty of norway. so its a film to watch, though not an EMP of extravaganza. so its a small recommend from the grumpy old man

In dreams
RMS194911 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
What the hell ??? After establishing a premise it was just one dream sequence after another after another after another,, then just a lazy quick twist in the end.. The acting was okay but the writer and director should be ashamed of this drivel.

A Nightmare on Boring Street
reb201430 June 2021
I tried, I really did. The premise sounded good, if a little too familiar.

I thought the cast was okay, and it's always good to see Barbara Crampton back in action.

It's a slow moving movie, albeit too slow for me. (And I don't mind slow moving movies as long as there is a decent payoff.)

So many dreams upon dreams upon dreams. I started to hope a certain razor fingered boogy man would make an appearance and liven things up, but no such luck.

No Freddy Krueger, no surprise ending and a number of questions left unanswered.

What a nightmare indeed.

Barbara Crampton leads a lackluster lovecraft story
influxtwo24 July 2021
This film does not add up to much. It is great to see Barbara Crampton, an 80s horror goddess still getting work. But this film was very lacking. The writing alone caused the acting to suffer, as well as the story and plot. This was a domino effect that made the whole film suffer. With bad writing the actors never become convincing, then the paper thin story barely staggers along. Without any kind of pay off or money shot of any kind the film very abruptly ends. The whole production seemed to get off on the wrong foot and can barely stand on it's own. I love these kinds of stories however the execution here was a bit poor. Perhaps better production, cinematography and writing could have saved this.

Lovecrafitian? .. not quite - also not the best cast...
sjarja12 February 2021
I love Lovecraftian cosmic horror. I love the madness, the fear, the unknown .. the mystery and the abstract.

I am not convinced that this movie delivers though .. It has some of the imagery of Lovecraftian monsters .. but it lacks all the circumstance.

What i disliked the most was the cast .. the protagonist couple as well as the main antagonist acted in a very unnatural way .. not at all the way "normal people" do.

Especially the communication between the couple was abysmal. They did not communicate - nor had they any hint of a chemistry together.

The other thing that annoyed me was that the Nordic culture was - once again - portrait in such a rediculous way. (i am looking at you, Midsommar)

Now i would say that the story has potential .. but its the potential of a mystery / horror story that plays out in a remote place filled with cultish weirdos - so hardly an original setting.

Compared to "the colour of space", "the void", "the Mouth of Madness", "the prince of Darkness" etc .. this movie certainly feels way too mundane and lazy - never pushing the limits playing it way too safe.

Could've been something to watch, but extremely bad acting from the main protagonist just ruins any chance at entertainment.

Pretty good if you're desperate for a Lovecraft movie!
dronetek-519607 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I see some other reviews saying there's a "little" lovecraft insperation in this movie, but I found it to be pretty true to Lovecraft's Cthulu mythos. It's bascially just another take on The Shadow Over Innsmouth (as well as other lovecraft stories about men feeling pulled back to their 'deep one' roots) and I think they did a decent job.

A waste of Barbara Crampton
aarpcats13 December 2021
Remember the flashbacks in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where Spike and Drusilla were even hipper and more goth than they were in modern Sunnyvale, but Angel wore an awful wig and spoke with an inexplicably bad Irish accent? It was as if a fifth grade class was performing a play about Lucky Charms, and the only reason you liked it was because it was Buffy's show?

In this movie, Our Lady of 80s Horror Barbara Crampton tries to speak English in a Norwegian accent that makes David Boreanaz sound like Laurence Olivier. It's bad, and it isn't just bad movie bad. It's unintentionally hilarious.

Babs leads a group of Norwegian villagers that want to welcome a young American back home to Norway after his father dies. He brings with him his enormously pregnant wife, who wants to cash in on her father-in-law's estate, and get the hell back home to have her baby. Because it's a horror movie, hubby starts to go crazy and wants to stay in Norway. As lovely as the fjords are, the wife knows something is up and considers leaving anyway.

That's when the Lovecraftian/Wickerman/Midsommar shenanigans start, but by then the viewer is so sick of the movie that Angel and his Lucky Charms accent aren't looking so bad. No one cares who dies, and every moment of this film not showing fjords and mountains is a moment you will never get back.

Go watch Buffy. And, if you really need some Barbara Crampton, watch "Jakob's Wife."

Some great scenes in a decent movie
tommymiddle22 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The atmosphere is creepy and uniqe, and the story grips you tighter and tighter. However I find the repetetive dreaming too predictable to make it really scary. Sure, there is a good reason for the dreams but it makes the rythm unsatisfying. Great cinematography and good acting keeps it on track though and in the end I have the feeling I've seen something out of the ordinary.

One of the worst movies like ever. You can't really feel for a scene as it becomes a dream. So not real. Then it just ends. Avoid this.

Had potential then goes nowhere and ends abruptly.
enigma-947-33946722 February 2021
Absolute garbage ending, zero answers or explanations given. Then it just suddenly ends and the credits roll. What?

Had potential 90% through, last 10 mins ruined the movie. It's like the writer just completely gave up and didn't have an ending.

At least we got to see that hot chick naked for a while ;)

The film had a promising start but it is let down from henceforth. Dreams upon dreams & dreams turn into nightmare. After I watched this I understand how it got its namesake as I felt like I sacrificed an hour and half of my time with a half thought out conclusion.
