An engaging episode

Warning: Spoilers
When Teyla and Dr Keller visit Teyla's home world, all is not well. The Athosian village is deserted and Teyla, as it turns out, wrongly suspects a warrior race, currently on the planet, of killing them all. Dr Keller has never been off world and finds the whole experience terrifying. By the end of the episode, we are no wiser as to what has happened to the Athosians, but more importantly, Dr Keller has something of a medical nature to tell Teyla. The nature of this is not revealed as the episode concludes.

Interesting

Warning: Spoilers
Ironically with Jewel Staite (Dr. Keller)in this episode, the plot is eerily similar to the "Firefly" episode in which Wash complains that while his wife Zoe has lots of war stories when she served with Mal, he really hasn't had any real stories to tell. So Mal takes him along on a heist in which they are captured by Mal's enemy Niska and tortured.

In this one, Teyla and Dr. Keller (Kaylee in "Firefly") go to Teyla's planet where they are captured by an enemy race seeking information.

Blink and you'll miss Danny Trejo

Dr. Keller and Teyla plan for a night out with Athosian friends. However things go terribly awry when found in the Athosians' place are an aggressive race called the Bola Kai who like lollipops and a Genii caught in the cross-hairs. Of course, the girls manage to survive, but I would liked to see more of the Bola Kai and Danny Trejo as their leader. He's too good and evocative an actor to be relegated to a bit part.

Boring buddy cop episode

Stargate Atlantis is a b-grade affair. Each week, the inhabitants of Atlantis venture out to new planets that just so happen to resemble a pine forest somewhere outside Vancouver. While on these new planets, they have adventures that just so happen to resemble those of other 1990s sci-fi TV shows filmed in pine forests just outside Vancouver: Stargate SG-1, the X-Files, the Outer Limits, etc etc. Some weeks the storyline, character development and acting is good enough to overlook how trite the show is. Other weeks it almost hurts to watch. This is one of the hurty episodes.

This one really only exists to give the Dr Keller character some dedicated screen time and development. They contrast her with Teyla for maximum effect - Teyla is bold and resourceful, Keller naive and useless. When everything goes wrong, Keller doesn't cope and Teyla keeps her cool. But this week's problem requires both a strong amazon AND a doctor, so they overcome adversity together - each using her unique skills. Along the way, Keller learns some resilience and Teyla some humility. By the end they have bonded and we're all meant to care a little more about Keller, who is now entrusted with a further piece of the story arc.

Jewel Staite and Rachel Luttrell deserve awards for playing these ridiculously shallow characters with such seriousness. I don't how they kept straight faces.
