When the coronavirus pandemic shut production down across the film industry back in March, OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network) had just resumed production on season five of “Queen Sugar.”
The network had finished shooting just one episode. During the shutdown, producer Ava DuVernay and her team including Paul Garnes, head of physical production for Array and executive producer on the show, met frequently to discuss the changing landscape. The existing scripts didn’t fit in a pandemic world that also included Black Lives Matter and an upcoming election.
When shooting resumed, DuVernay and Garnes had decided the Bordelon family would tackle the Black Lives Matter movement and coronavirus.
Garnes spoke with Variety about navigating the new season amid hurricanes and a pandemic.
How easy was it to come up with the decision to address coronavirus in this new season of “Queen Sugar?”

Sufjan Stevens is about to release his new album The Ascension, out September 25th via Asthmatic Kitty, and he’s shared a brand-new song and video from the album, “Sugar.”
Directed by Ezra Hurwitz, the dance-heavy video shows a family living a vintage and seemingly peaceful life before their domestic bliss starts to crumble around them. All the while, Stevens’ repeated refrain grows more and more intense: “Come on, baby, give me some sugar.”
“‘Sugar’ is ultimately about the desire for goodness and purity (and true sustenance),” Stevens said in a statement.

“Watermelon Sugar” by Harry Styles bolted up from number-seven to number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 for the chart dated August 15. This marks his first time topping the singles chart in his career after a couple of previous top-10 hits. And it makes him the second former member of One Direction to reach the summit after Zayn, who went in his own direction as a solo artist before the rest of the band officially went on hiatus.
Styles’s previous highest charting single was “Sign of the Times,” the lead single from his eponymous first solo album in 2017. That song debuted at number-four on the Hot 100, but that was as high as it ever got. He then returned to the top 10 in 2020 when the ballad “Adore You” gradually rose as high as the number-six spot. As that song was hovering in the top 20, “Watermelon Sugar” was having its own ascent, reaching...

A new musical based on the classic film “Some Like It Hot” will premiere on Broadway in the fall of 2021.
The show, which features a book by “The Inheritance’s” Matthew Lopez and music and lyrics from the “Smash” and “Hairspray!” team of Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, was originally scheduled to debut in Chicago in spring of 2021. It’s now abandoning a Windy City run for a stint on the Great White Way. Casey Nicholaw, best known for “The Book of Mormon” and “Spamalot,” will direct and choreograph a show.
It’s not the first time that the Billy Wilder farce has been adapted for the stage. “Sugar,” a musical with a book by Peter Stone (“Charade”), music by Jule Styne (“Gypsy”), and lyrics by Bob Merrill (“Carnival!”) premiered on Broadway in 1972, picking up four Tony nominations.

Some Like It Hot, a planned stage musical based on the great 1959 Billy Wilder comedy, has set its sights on a Fall 2021 Broadway opening, producers announced today.
The staging would mark the musical’s world premiere: A previously announced pre-Broadway engagement in Chicago has been canceled.
With a book by Matthew Lopez (The Inheritance), music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray), and direction/choreography by Casey Nicholaw (The Prom), Some Like It Hot has been in the development since at least 2018, with a 2020 debut initially planned.
Additional details for the 2021 staging – cast, venue, production dates – will be announced at a later date by producers the Shubert Organization and Neil Meron. Co-producers are Roy Furman, Robert Greenblatt and the Nederlander Organization.
Just the week prior to Broadway’s March 12 shutdown, producers announced plans for a now-scotched March 2-April 4 2021 pre-Broadway limited engagement at Chicago’s Cadillac Palace Theatre.

Elodie Yung has joined the cast of Fox’s drama pilot “The Cleaning Lady,” TheWrap has learned.
The “Daredevil” alum will star as Reyna Salonga in the drama, an adaptation of the Argentinean series of the same name. She will take over for Shannyn Sossamon, who was originally cast in the pilot earlier this year.
The series is described as “a darkly aspirational character drama about a whip-smart doctor who comes to the U.S. for a medical treatment to save her ailing son. But when the system fails and pushes her into hiding, she refuses to be beaten down and marginalized. Instead, she becomes a cleaning lady for the mob and starts playing the game by her own rules.”

YouTube ranked the most-viewed Super Bowl Liv spots on the video service on Feb. 2, which for many are the real draw of the NFL’s championship game — with Amazon, Facebook and Jeep coming out on top.
Viewership of Super Bowl Liv ads on YouTube during the game were up about 30% over 2019, according to the company. YouTube specifically called out viewership of Super Bowl ads viewed on connected TVs, which rose over 70% from last year.
In addition to the YouTube ad views, Google released search trends related to the 2020 Super Bowl. In the U.S., after the halftime show featuring Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, the search site saw a 3,500% spike in “Shakira Shakira lyrics” and a 2,450% jump in “JLo Tour 2020” searches. Searches for “over/under National Anthem” shot up 1,450% in the U.S. after Demi Lovato performed the national anthem.

At 12 songs and 44 minutes, Brockhampton‘s fifth album operates like a tightrope act between the group’s propensity for overwhelming earnestness and the chaos of their kinetic cyphers. Marvel’s “Captain Marvel” opened to Thursday-preview grosses of $20.7 million. That’s only slightly below last year’s “Black Panther,” which opened one hour later. For co-directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, that figure nearly doubles the total gross of the four indies they made before Marvel came calling..
This is a film that has even rival studios rooting for its success. Something has to stop the box-office slide of 2019; movie ticket sales are down are a catastrophic 30 percent so far. One reason for the falloff is by this time last year we had “Black Panther,” 2018’s biggest domestic grosser (and second largest opener to Marvel’s “Avengers: Infinity War”).
Whatever your feelings on the comic-book takeover of Hollywood, their success is vital for the struggling theater business. And as Marvel maintains its dominance In that world, they look to indie filmmakers to guide them.

“Captain Marvel” opened on March 8 with pressure on its shoulders disproportionate to the fact that it’s the 21st movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That’s because it’s the prelude to a much bigger adventure — “Avengers: Endgame,” which opens in less than two months — and of course also because it’s the first McU movie to centrally focus on a female hero. Like “Wonder Woman” before it, all eyes are on critical notices and box office receipts, as if one film (or even two) could or should be used to measure the validity of making superhero movies about women.
And in that special way that mostly tends to befall movies that uplift women, “Captain Marvel” already had fanboys with their knives out in a campaign to tank the film’s Rotten Tomatoes audience rating — before anyone had seen it. The review aggregator decided to shut down pre-release ratings...

By now, Hollywood’s affection for plucking up-and-coming filmmakers from the independent arena to helm high-stakes blockbusters is old news. From Cathy Yan to Chloe Zhao, Ryan Coogler to Adam Wingard, Jon Watts to Taika Waititi, big-budget features have become both a regular stepping-stone for Sundance breakouts. But filmmaking duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck never seemed like the type of creators to make the switch to multi-million-dollar franchise films.
Best known for their debut drama “Half Nelson” — which earned Ryan Gosling his first Oscar nomination — and their sports-centric “Sugar,” the festival regulars spent the first part of their career directing stories about complex characters in somehow off-kilter situations. Fluidity and flexibility rules their partnership, so while they always write their projects together, Fleck may be the only director on one (like “Half Nelson”) or Boden might be on deck to also edit (as she did with their first three...

In “Captain Marvel,” Brie Larson radiates an ability that too many comic-book heroes never get the chance to show: the superpower of expression. She plays a Kree warrior, known as Vers (pronounced verse), who has been trained in the familiar comic-book-movie art of kicking cosmic butt (she specializes in leaping and flying martial-arts moves and the ability to deliver high-energy photon blasts). Yet what you can’t help but notice, apart from the slithery bravura of her combat skills, is the feeling she brings to the fight. When she’s up against a gang of Skrulls, with her forearms locked inside a pair of molten cylinders, she’s game as hell, but then the cylinders come off, and it sparks a righteous “Yeah!” and a grin of triumph. Larson seems to be saying: It’s a Marvel movie! If we’re not having an otherworldly blast, what’s the point?...

When Marvel opens its “Captain Marvel” later this month, the Brie Larson-starring superhero feature will mark a major sea change for the blockbuster Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise. It’s the first wholly female-led superhero film in the McU’s decade-long history, and it’s the first McU film to be directed by a female filmmaker (“Mississippi Grind” and “Sugar” filmmaker Anna Boden co-directs alongside her long-time filmmaking partner Ryan Fleck). And, as Larson has made clear, its press coverage will look different, too, as the Oscar winner has been outspoken about making her press days more diverse than she’s seen over the course of her own career.
The actress and filmmaker made headlines last year for calling out the gender imbalance within the film criticism world while accepting an award at the Crystal + Lucy Awards. And her assertion that “there is an insanely low chance a woman of...

Just ahead of the arrival of her new album, Maren Morris has given another taste of the collection with the uplifting song “The Bones.” Morris’ second album Girl will be released March 8th.
Lightly distorted guitar arpeggios open the track, and Morris sings about a relationship that’s built to survive the bad weather. “We’re in the home stretch of the hard times/we took a hard left, but we’re alright,” she sings, offering a glimpse of love that inevitably has its ups and downs but somehow always manages to return to form.

In the end, it was about abs, not knees.
Maroon 5’s Super Bowl halftime performance will by no means go down as the worst ever, but it immediately wins a trophy for most anticlimactic, with weeks of tense buildup leading up to exactly the fizzy 14 minutes you would have pictured in your head if Colin Kaepernick had never existed.
Prior to showtime, two possible surprise elements had been hinted at — that there’d be a nod to SpongeBob Squarepants, and that there’d be a nod to social consciousness. Well, one out of two ain’t bad.
But we did get barechestedness for the first time since Super Bowl Xxxviii, and this time the cameras did not cut away but embraced frontman Adam Levine in all his well sculpted glory, as he made the last of three costume changes — trench coat stripped down to sweater, stripped down to tank top,...

Maroon 5 delivered a surprise-free set with a plethora of career-spanning hits including “This Love,” “Girls Like You,” “Sugar” and “Moves Like Jagger” during the Super Bowl Liii Halftime Show.
The Red Pill Blues band kicked off the show with singer Adam Levine leading a melodic performance of the Songs About Jane singles “Harder To Breathe” and “This Love” flanked by lasers. Levine later picked up steam with “Girls Like You,” backed by a gospel choir and concluded their 13-minute concert by ripping his shirt off mid-gyration during “Moves Like Jagger.

The 2019 Super Bowl halftime show was an assortment of hits both nostalgic and new. Maroon 5 opened the show with several of the band's earlier songs like "Harder to Breathe" and "This Love," but the vibe quickly shifted when Travis Scott appeared to perform last year's ubiquitous "Sicko Mode."
Following the unexpected collaboration between the two artists, Adam Levine went on to perform newer songs like "Sugar" and "Girls Like You." In another unexpected twist, Big Boi also popped up to perform Outkast's "The Way You Move." At the very end, Levine turned it up by performing "Moves like Jagger" . . . shirtless. Relive the halftime show ahead.

Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine dedicated the band’s Super Bowl halftime performance to “Jordy,” his late manager Jordan Feldstein. Feldstein, the older brother of actor Jonah Hill, died in December 2017 at the age of 40 of a blood clot in his leg, among other contributing factors. Among his many successes as the band’s and Levine’s representative, Feldstein negotiated Levine’s coach role on NBC’s “The Voice.”

Adam Levine got a bit of a scare on Thursday during Maroon 5's show in Toronto when an overzealous fan jumped up onstage and ran to him towards the end of the concert. A security officer quickly followed and apprehended the woman, who was not identified, and escorted her off the stage at Scotiabank Arena as she resisted. Levine appeared unbothered during the incident and he and the rest of the band continued performing their last encore song, their 2015 hit "Sugar." No injuries were reported. The fan, who is 22, was arrested busted for public mischief and released without bail, TMZ reported, citing law enforcement sources. Local police have not commented. A source told E! News that...

If it feels like the hype machine of Hollywood is resting a bit easier this season it’s because, for the first time in a while, the next Marvel movie won’t be arriving until this March. Captain Marvel follows Air Force pilot Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), who happens to be part-Kree, part-human warrior. Helmed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, they are the duo behind the incredible Half Nelson, Sugar, and, most recently, Mississippi Grind.
“This is not a superhero who’s perfect or otherworldly or has some godlike connection,” Boden told EW. “But what makes her special is just how human she is. She’s funny, but doesn’t always tell good jokes. And she can be headstrong and reckless and doesn’t always make the perfect decisions for herself. But at her core, she has so much heart and so much humanity — and all of its messiness.

YouTube Premium is to debut 50 original series in 2019 and has got a range of celebrity-driven formats in development with producers of “all shapes and sizes”.
Luke Hyams, head of originals, YouTube, Emea, lifted the lid on the Google-owned company’s content drive in Europe, Middle East and Africa, at the Edinburgh International Television Festival.
Hyams revealed that it will launch these 50 shows next year, alongside its 65 existing originals and specials, in a variety of different ways, including putting some episodes up for free, while also balancing between full series binge drops and weekly episodes.
He told producers in the UK that he wants to work with local content, highlighting its recent Fulwell 73-produced series Training Days with Jack Whitehall, that can “take us into a new world” and The Sidemen Show. He also premiered a short clip from its forthcoming big-budget sci-fi drama Origin, which is produced by The Crown producer Left Bank Pictures.

August is not exactly a month known for exciting new shows. The summer push has largely crested, Emmys fatigue is real, and the new fall season lingers just beyond the horizon.
But while the TV world plays catch-up on a busy summer so far, the roster of new shows continues to expand, as always. It’s a less-traditional slate than usual, but that might be necessary to catch the eyes of TV viewers readying themselves for the rest of 2018.
(We do this roundup of new shows every month — if you missed any of those previous picks, here are some notable TV premieres from February, March, April, May, June, and July.)
“Random Acts of Flyness”

The producers of CBS’ “Late Late Show” have quietly figured out how to take one of the program’s signature segments out for a drive on Madison Avenue.
Many famous musicians and singers find their way to “Carpool Karaoke,” the segment in which host James Corden takes a pop star for a spin while singing along to tunes. Advertisers haven’t been as plentiful.
Volkswagen Ag’s Porsche helped create a new twist in an installment of the popular segment in last night’s broadcast. The show included a “Carpool Karaoke” vignette with Maroon 5’s Adam Levine. During the segment, Corden and the singer drove around Los Angeles in the new 2018 Cayenne Turbo while singing Maroon 5 biggest hits, such as“Moves Like Jagger,” “Cold” and “Sugar.” The show’s Twitter feed promoted the car’s in-program appearance.

She will be loved indeed. Adam Levine finally joined James Corden for The Late Late Show's Carpool Karaoke, and together they proved they're just a couple really cool dads. The Maroon 5 frontman broke out some of the band's biggest hits, like "Moves Like Jagger," "Sugar," "This Love," "She Will Be Loved," and the more recent "Wait." The duo even got pulled over by a cop, but only so the cop could ask for a song and pass on a warning about not causing traffic hazards. On opening night of Sundance 2018, writer-director Tamara Jenkins premiered her new film “Private Life” to rave reviews. The New York drama was headed for derailment when she submitted it to Netflix Indie Content directors of content Ian Bricke and his lieutenant Matt Levin; they loved her script about an infertile middle-aged couple (Paul Giamatti and Kathryn Hahn) desperately trying to have a child by any means necessary. The drama turned out so well that Netflix is holding it for the fall festival circuit.
