This Underrated Gem Could Outshine ‘Gintama’ as the Best Comedy Anime
Image
Say ‘best comedy anime’ or Gintama, it would mean the same thing and nobody would even object. Such is the charm and influence of Gintama. From meme culture to the comedy genre, no other anime comes close to its brilliance. That is until Hinamatsuri enters the conversation.

For everything it offers, Hinamatsuri is a highly underrated slice-of-life, comedy anime. It shares some similarities with Gintama and is one of the only few titles that comes close in terms of enjoyment. So, here’s what makes Hinamatsuri special as a new star of the comedy genre.

From the characters to comedy, Hinamatsuri does everything right

Hinamatsuri is the story of Nitta Yoshifumi, a Yakuza who turns into a babysitter/father when Hina enters his life. Hina is a young girl with psychic abilities. While that description usually hints towards an adorable baby like Anya from Spy x Family, Hina is sly,...

‘Witch Watch’ Just Made the Best ‘Demon Slayer’ Reference Which Marks the Much Needed Return of Comedy Anime
Image
Witch Watch easily stands out as one of the best romcom anime this season, especially in a lineup that hasn’t really offered many standout shows. It has quickly generated much buzz because of its interesting premise and hilarious punches that remind us of gag comedy anime like Gintama.

The story of Witch Watch also relies on ample references to other shows, which just adds to its comedy charm. This kind of playful tone highlights the much-needed renewal of meta-comedy anime, which kind of got lost in recent times.

The Demon Slayer references were the highlight of episode 4

In episode 4 of Witch Watch, we learn more about the character called Kanshi Kazamatsuri, or Kan, who is a Tengu. He is also one of Nico’s childhood friends and shares the same goal of protecting her from any problems as the protagonist, Morihito.

But, it gets established right away that Morihito...

‘Gintama: The Final’ and ‘Gintama The Very Final’ Movies to Get Special 4Dx Anniversary Screenings

Created by Hideaki Sorachi, Gintama is a series that has been loved because of its quirkiness as the fans of the series embraced the special tone of the series as a whole. I Was Today Years Old When I Found Out One Piece Zoro Va Kazuya Nakai Is in Ghost of Tsushima
Image
Out of all the Straw Hat Pirates, the one crew member whom I have loved and admired since the beginning is Roronoa Zoro. Zoro is the swordsman of the crew and the second strongest member of the Straw Hat Pirates in One Piece. He dreams of becoming the strongest swordsman in the One Piece world and is getting close to his dream with each episode.

One Piece fans might not know this, but Zoro’s character is voiced by legendary Japanese voice actor Kazuya Nakai, who has voiced many prominent roles within the anime industry. In fact, he is one of the few voice actors who has been a part of the One Piece franchise since the beginning, as he has voiced Zoro from episode 2 of the anime.

However, what shocked me even more was the fact that Nakai’s voice acting talent is not limited to anime. He has...

‘To Be Hero X’ Makes Me Realise How Rare Good First Episodes Have Become
Image
People say we should not judge a book by its cover, but as humans, we all end up doing just that. This is why if a show doesn’t really have a promising trailer or teaser, our expectations from it start to dwindle.

Thus, the first episode is hands down one of the most important episodes for any series because that majorly decides how much love it will get from fans. Yes, some shows may have a pretty slow start, only later becoming great, but those cases are few, especially in 2025 when attention spans are shorter than ever.

Nice from To Be Hero X [Credits: Studio Lan]

The first episode of To Be Hero X made me realize exactly how important it is for any show to start with a bang. What I thought would be just another lackluster animated series ended up becoming a show I am looking forward to the most this season.

From Hayao Miyazaki to Ichiro Itano, ‘Zenshu’ Is Mappa’s Love Letter to the Most Legendary Animators
Image
Premiered earlier this year, Studio Mappa’s original anime, Zenshu, once again put the spotlight on the anime industry. Any mention of the Japanese animation industry sparks a mixed response from the audience. On one hand we have the bleaker aspects such as the debilitating working conditions, stereotypical representations, and fan service.

The flip side of that perception is the myriad worlds that have been brought to life with revered 2D animation. From cultural phenomena like the Big Three anime to comedy series like Nichijou and Gintama, the anime industry has allowed fans to experience a wide range of emotions.

It would not be unfair or incorrect to say that anime, as a medium, has actually influenced the lives of many. Zenshu brings the good, the bad, and the ugly all to life. However, the focus on the good is delightful and honors the legacy of renowned animators.

10 Powerful Anime Characters Who Don't Actually Have Any Supernatural Powers
Image
When it comes to impossible feats of strength, the only limit that exists for anime characters is their creators’ imagination. From summoning ancient monsters to mastering the power of every element to obliterating entire planets with a single spell or move, unbelievable supernatural abilities know no bounds in anime, their uniqueness and scope being what draws many fans to the medium.

However, some of anime’s strongest characters, surprisingly enough, don’t have to rely on the aid of magic or paranormal enhancements to achieve superhuman triumphs. While still way stronger than your average human - sometimes, to the point of far surpassing realistic human abilities — these anime characters have nothing supernatural about them.

10 Dumbest Anime of All Time, Ranked
Image
The anime medium has several genres that range from pulse-pounding action to heartbreaking romance. There's also a plethora of comedy anime, with the best of these having humor that's so ridiculous that it's hilarious. Even beyond this genre, however, some anime are just downright dumb, namely if they aren't meant to be laughed at.

Some of the dumbest anime blur the lines between intentional and unintentional comedies, being able to be laughed at for their storytelling decisions. Others are true in these comedic efforts, while others are doomed because of the quality of their English dubs, resulting in unintended gags that are still infamous to this day. Even worse are those that can't be taken seriously at all due to how seriously they take themselves, particularly when the animation doesn't match the tone of the anime.

‘Gintama’ Gave Shonen Its Best Female Character before Momo from ‘Dandadan’ Took That Title

Shonen might be the most popular genre that can generate the most successful and top-grossing anime. But the genre is often plagued by the ill-treatment of women characters and the focus on male gaze. Dandadan is one of the few anime that broke away from the ‘useless Shonen heroine’ trope to give fans Momo, a well-rounded character who is arguably the strongest in her group.

But before Momo existed one classic Shonen girly who is so unhinged that people often forget that she, too, is a female character in a popular Shonen series. The character in question is Kagura from Gintama, who can also be called the superior version of Sakamoto Days‘ Lu.

10 Best Anime That Were Airing The Same Time As Dragon Ball & Dbz

Few anime franchises (if any) are more iconic than Akira Toriyama's flagship series, Dragon Ball. The beloved shonen manga debuted all the way back in 1984, and by the end of the decade, it had spawned two of the most popular anime adaptations — Dragon Ball & Dragon Ball Z — of all time.

From 1986 to 1996, Dragon Ball & Dragon Ball Z aired on Fuji TV, and by the end of the 20th century, the adventures of Son Goku had spread their roots around the world. 'Rurouni Kenshin' Reboot Samurai Anime Streaming on Netflix This February
Image
For a medium that was created in Japan, and often pulls from the country's folklore, mythology, and history, anime about samurai are surprisingly few and far between. Samurai warriors, Ronin, with their signature armor and katanas, all feature heavily across the medium, albeit alongside supernatural forces, magic, dark powers, giant mech suits, or all of the above. Of the few historical samurai anime available, there are a few that stand head and shoulders above the rest. Shinichiro Watanabe's Samurai Champloo is a classic, but it's incredibly difficult to find on streaming. But, one of the greatest samurai anime, Rurouni Kenshin, is about to find a new streaming home for new fans to enjoy.

Rurouni Kenshin, written by disgraced writer and artist, Nobuhiro Watsuki, is set in the Meiji era of Japan (1868-1912) and follows Hitokiri Battosai, a former assassin of the Bakumatsu, who abandons that life, starting fresh as a Ronin,...

Anime filler has gained a lot of notoriety for obvious reasons. Even in the best cases, franchises like Naruto show that filler is a double-edged sword, capable of helping or hurting a franchise. Gintama, though, gave a breakdown of anime filler and timelines that serves as a hilariously sincere reflection on the...
