Only three women have ever been nominated for the Best Director Academy Award. And The Hurt Locker's Kathryn Bigelow may turn out to be the very first one to take home the Oscar. Bigelow, 58, has directed the Iraq war indie, an intense drama that follows an Army bomb squad and its cocky leader (played by newcomer Jeremy Renner) in Baghdad. As her film, which will be on DVD Jan. 12, continues to rack up awards, here are five things you may not know about the filmmaker: 1. She Was James Cameron's Wife Bigelow married fellow filmmaker James Cameron, director of Titanic and Avatar,...

My blogs are often created as responses to requests of clients seeking research or to my own interests. I was recently put on the board of the new website www.Twolia.com and my blog on that site will be posted here as well because it is hitting that all important demographic: Woman.
Here is the first:
I am going to blog about women in film...starting with Kathryn Bigelow's "The Hurt Locker" which is bound for Academy Awards.

It's a surprisingly slow day for news, so I thought I'd feature this interview from a recent episode of The Colbert Report. Colbert talks with director Kathryn Bigelow about her movie The Hurt Locker, which is currently in theaters now. As anyone, including The Film Feed guys, will tell you, The Hurt Locker is a must-see this summer, one of the most intense movies you'll watch, without a doubt. If you've seen it or are remotely interested in it, hopefully you read our interview with Kathryn and writer Mark Boal earlier this summer. Additionally, this is a fun, little interview that also highlights Hurt Locker in a great way - enjoy! If you haven't seen the trailer for The Hurt Locker yet, I highly suggest you watch that online as well! The Hurt Locker is directed by Kathryn Bigelow, of Blue Steel, Point Break, K-19: The Widowmaker, and Mission Zero previously.

Actor Anthony Mackie asked his wife to FedEx his dignity back to him. The inexperienced Jordanian crew gave the actors real liquor for a fight scene (which wasn’t discovered until well into the shooting, thanks to the actors). Director Bigelow (Near Dark, Strange Days) and screenwriter writer Mark Boals talk to Pretty/Scary about working with actor Jeremy Renner on the newest action movie about the Iraq War and the men who diffuse bombs in the streets of Baghdad...
'The Hurt Locker' itself is a term that means a ‘Place to put the pain, a place you don’t wanna be,’ explains Bigelow.

Kathryn Bigelow hasn't made a feature film since 2002's Harrison Ford starrer K19: The Widowmaker, unless you count the "blink and you'll miss it" Mission Zero with Uma Thurman. The Hurt Locker returns her to real roots as a character-driven action director, and she gets some terrific performances out of relative unknowns Jeremy Renner and Anthony Mackie in this film about the war in Iraq. In our interview, she discusses fictionalizing real war stories, what The Hurt Locker does that other Iraq films haven't, and the everlasting legacy of Point Break. How did this project come together? It really predominantly came from his ac ...
