Amazon Prime had this listed as a Five Venoms movie, so of course I clicked Play. I am glad it wasn't a Venoms movie, because this was bad. It's not the worst I've seen, but I guess I expect a lot from a movie featuring Lieh Lo and Kao Fei.
The gist here is 5 rebels, working independently of each other, want to stop the Manchus and their dealings with the Russians. There are petty squabbles between the main 3 rebels, a Muslim, a Mongol and a Lama Chief (Kao Fei) as they attempt to work together to achieve their goal. It's like watching three teenagers in a backyard play fight.
The plot is so haggard, a waiter makes fun of it. He gets killed for it by the dignitaries guards. Apparently they didn't find being mocked all that amusing. The Muslim, Mongol and Lama ruin the restaurant while defeating the guards. They are helped by the dignitary's interpreter who is dressed like a Ninja.
Meng Fei, who is a dignitary's body guard, is a rebel in disguise. He learns the Interpreter is as well. They team up toward the middle of the movie to find a way to free a captured Rebel Leader (Yue Hua) being held by the Russians.
Leung Kar Yan and Lieh Lo are working with the Russians in exchange for wealth and status. Everyone has an agenda in this movie. Typical of these films, of course, but one is never quite sure on whose side anyone truly is.
The final fight takes too long to reach the pinnacle. It's a lot of swinging and missing before anyone actually gets hit. A Mongol with a whip cannot seem to knock anyone down or out? There's a simulation of a basketball game with a bomb rather than a ball in play.
Lueng Kar Yan shows off his skills - one handed - against the rebels. This is how bad the fight scenes were. Leung only needed one hand to fight. Lieh Lo looks like he's sparring more than fighting any of the rebels. Yue Hua barely fights. He gets hit in the chest by Lieh Lo and goes down, not to rise again until the end of the battle. Lieh Lo didn't hit him that hard and BOOM, down he went. Really?
Leung Kar Yan, Lieh Lo, Kao Fei and Yue Hua are wasted in this film. I have seen better from Fei Meng.
