very SLOW pace
coflorida17 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This flick could've have been trimmed down at least 30-40 mins of useless footage.....

The first hour was pretty NOTHING but... Surfing... talking...skateboarding... REPEAT

1:05 mins into flick when they all fall in hole it starts to feel like a movie...but NOT by much

The acting wasn't bad... but there was way too much time spent on the skateboarding and surfing scenes.

Skateboarding, surfing and monsters
BandSAboutMovies12 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Originally titled Road to Red, this surf/skate/horror hybrid is all about five best friends who set out on a road trip that quickly turns into an epic battle for survival.

It was co-written and directed by Tito de Costa. It's his fist full-length movie.

In the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, a sheriff finds world skateboard champion Paul McGuiness' abandoned car parked at a lake and his surfboard flaoting nearby. Some believe he killed himself or overdosed. His brother and manager Bruce sets out to learn the truth, along with four of Paul's best friend. But now, whatever killed Paul is coming for them.

I'd compare this to The Descent, but there's plenty of skating, too. It gets pretty claustrophobic at times, if that's something that upsets you.

I don't trust IMDb anymore for the rating! 6.5 seriously? This movie is nothing except a nice poster. Don't see the point of making this movie.

California Dream is a Dead End
nogodnomasters18 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This was re-released as Darkslide in 2019.

Paul goes missing after a poorly scripted bar scene. Brother and friends sell drugs, surf, skateboard. They make the movie Paul wanted to do to be "free" a man who spends all of his time surfing and skateboarding and making a living at it. Once you get tired of the beach music and death metal, they get trapped in a tunnel maze with cannibal rapist Encino Man. The second half looked like found footage quality. They toss in some life philosophy monologue to give a bad film some kind of philosophical meaning with phrases like "The brighter the sunshine, the darker the night." Sooo Deep.

On the bright side, they kill a lot of skateboarders/surfers who can't act. BTW Circus-Szalewski was great in a Randy Quaid kind of way.

Guide: F-word. Rape. Near nudity.

1 hour of nothing

Seriously, an hour before anything actually happens? What movie were these a-holes out to make? There was a full hour of skateboarding, weed smoking, too old to be doing this nonsense before anything remotely plot moving happens. Tell you what. You wanna watch a good surfing/skateboarding film and horror movie? Watch Dogtown and Z-Boys then immediately watch any decent horror movie that actually knows what the hell it's supposed to be. Or go watch the original Point Break if you're looking for philosophy, surfing and action.

What did I just watch? Dreadfully boring.
bigspawn197116 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
1:27:46 in before you see the "monster" and then only for a few seconds. The time leading up to that is an hour and a half of monologues, rudimentary skateboarding, basic surfing & partying.

You don't get a full reveal of the antagonist until 1:45:46, 10 minutes before the end.

I kept waiting, "ok, now something will happen"...no. It's like they just filmed people going about their day, then added 15 minutes of a scripted movie.

The acting isn't terrible, lighting is good when they are underground, you can see what is going on. None of that makes up for the almost total lack of anything happening.

I also like how rabies takes effect in 24-48 hours in this universe, not the 4 - 12 weeks it takes in ours. Within two days he begins drooling and getting violent to where he needs subdued.

It also teaches a skateboard may be the deadliest hand-to-hand weapon ever created by man.

Another question, where did he get hundreds of candles living underground?

But watching fingernails grow is more exciting than the 1st hour and 45 minutes of this "horror" movie.

Spend your time cleaning litter boxes or watching paint dry instead

The camera man/woman was the only one who did a good job.

The first hour and half should be cut down to 20 minutes. It is just skate, surf and weed clips. The skate and surf clips are not even good. There was maybe 3 tricks done. It really was just garbage. The last 30 minutes we actually have something happening. The last 30 minutes was bad also. No plot. Not scary or exciting. Surprised there was money actually put into the quality of the filming. The camera man was the only one who did a good job. If you decide to watch just skip the first hour.

Worth a watch
grafxdj-822885 July 2020
Interesting idea combining surfing, skatingboarding and horror. The acting of the main characters, vfx, camera, sound work, film grading, and general production was quite good. Compelling enough to keep me watching to find out what happened to the missing brother. The party scenes could have been cut down in length to speed up the pacing of the first half. Not a bad first major effort though from the director. I wouldn't be surprised to see him and the main character actors doing some impressive things in their future projects.

T...E...D...I...O...U...S.......... yawn

I added 1 star for the half-decent camerawork.... you're welcome. The acting is ok-ish at best.

But my word, the pacing of this film. I mean, If I fast forward in a film, it means something is wrong. Now I don't mind a slow story, if it's actually developing into something. This was nothing if not anti-climactic and utterly boring.

Some parts were just ridiculous. Professional surfers/skaters who just managed to jump and clear relatively big gaps, suddenly panic and collectively jump off their boards when they encounter an unimpressive gash in the track?

And a rabies infection from a rat? Did he get super rabies? He become symptomatic within mere hours. How did the guy get the candles where did he get the lighter or matches from? And whilst we're at it.... where does this obviously malnourished underground dwelling hermit, living out in the middle of nowhere, get his superhuman strength from? Surely a couple of fit, sporty young people should be able to defeat this guy right? And what about the crosses? Does he keep a ton of them lying around?... just incase a few delicious humans happen to pop around in his makeshift cathedral?

Personally my biggest grievance is the pseudo philosophical ramblings scattered throughout the film. Lord have mercy.

The only redeeming quality of this film: a couple of nice shots.

What a wast of time.

This is one of these movies what world need. You can always do better movie that this, and if you don´t,stay home.If you are pothead surfer or skater, this is for you. I watch this 1h50min about an hour, cause i skipped frames so many times. First hour is boring and terrible to watch, because acting and story line is so bad..and rest of movie: also very bad..this piece of schait was total 10-15 minutes good scenes,so that makes those 2 stars.
