The Tuvache kid starts to blame his parents for not selling him in the first place. This event leads to the death of the Tuvache mother.

Mère Magloire stubbornly refuses to sell her farm to Maître Chicot, the innkeeper in Epreville. But when he offered to pay her a sum of money every month for the rest of her life, she finally agrees.

This corpse, was a tourist who suddenly dead, and the inn-keeper planned to remove it discreetly after all the guests have gone to bed. Marguerite's cries wake them all, and she is held for murder. The police inspector let her go, for he has known the truth, but the scandal is discovered. Marguerite leaves the town with her husband who suddenly has got a promotion.

The Count of Sallure has just broken up with his mistress, and makes a jealous scene with his wife. She accepts his advances, but only in exchange for a large sum of money, which she insists will at least remain in the household.
