Two poor families live side by side: the Tuvaches and the Vallins. Mathilde d'Hubières, a rich woman from the city, is desperate because she doesn't have any children. She comes to the Tuvaches to buy their youngest son, but is refused and sent to their neighbour. The Vallins agrees to give her their son. Time passes, and all the time, The Tuvaches critic their neighbour, who live better because of the annual pension. The Tuvache kid falls in love with the daughter of a nobleman, but she chooses the Vallin kid, who is rich and educated. The Tuvache kid starts to blame his parents for not selling him in the first place. This event leads to the death of the Tuvache mother.

Encouraged by his friend's stories about Parisian women, Morin, a rich dealer of female clothing and accessories, cannot take his eyes away from his only companion in a night train, a beautiful young woman named Henriette. He takes the risk to kiss her, but she is, in shock, calling for help. Morin is arrested. Every one now calls him ' The Pig Morin'. Journalist Labarbe, Morin's friend, who is actually half-responsible, is sent with a large sum of money to Henriette's uncle to negosiate so that she draws the charge. After seeing the young woman, Labarbe wants to seduce her. This time, she doesn't refuse. She draws the charge, and Labarbe, who takes half of the money for himself, tells Morin that the mission is accomplished.

Charming, young Marguerite Amandon lives with her magistrate husband, but she is not happy. Using the name of Miss Clarisse, she takes soldier lovers who she receives in Room Number 11 at the Cheval d'or inn twice a week. For an excuse, she tells her husband that she is doing charity work. One night, her husband is gone for a week to Paris, so she is having a rendez-vous with her lover out of the usual schedule. She arrives late because her aunt came and finds the corpse of a man in her bed. This corpse, was a tourist who suddenly dead, and the inn-keeper planned to remove it discreetly after all the guests have gone to bed. Marguerite's cries wake them all, and she is held for murder. The police inspector let her go, for he has known the truth, but the scandal is discovered. Marguerite leaves the town with her husband who suddenly has got a promotion.
