Lombardo Boyar and Greg Grunberg in Alien Spider (2013)
Exclusive: Mike Mendez on the Journey From 'Mega Spider' to 'Big Ass Spider'
Lombardo Boyar and Greg Grunberg in Alien Spider (2013)
In 2012, I visited with director Mike Mendez and actor Greg Grunberg on the set of what was then called Mega Spider. Two years later, Mega Spider is now Big Ass Spider, and the flick has run the festival circuit before landing on blu-ray and VOD on January 7th. I spoke with Mike again, and we discussed title changes, audience response, and that big ass spider.

I visited you on set, on one of your last days of shooting. Back then, the title was Mega Spider. How did you get away with changing the title? Frankly, I think Big Ass Spider is much better.

Good! A lot of begging and pleading is the short answer to that. From the first time I met with Epic Pictures, that was something I told them: I really wanted to differentiate from your average Mega Snake or Mega Piranha or Mega-whatever. There are literally like...

7 Roles Taken By Actors For Ridiculously Awesome Reasons
Did you know that Stargate Sg-1 actor and staunch Canadian Michael Shanks once took a role in a low-rent TV film called Mega Snake just so he could extend his Us visa? Well, you do now, and more to the point, how ridiculous is that? Well, the answer is not very, really.

The fact of the matter is that actors are human beings like the rest of us. Impossibly glamourous and fabulously well-paid human beings, but human beings nonetheless. And like the rest of us human beings, they’re subject to their feelings and the taxman, and this may affect their decision-making. Of course for regular people, a crazy decision might often go unnoticed because we don’t live our lives in the public eye. However, for actors this is somewhat differrent – they exist under a harsh media glare where all their decisions are endlessly scrutinised.

Yet despite this scrutiny,...

Spiders (2013) Review
Small asteroids tear apart an abandoned Soviet space station causing its orbit to degrade and one of the modules to crash into the NYC Subway system. Officers of the Transit Authority discover lethal spiders pouring out of the debris. Soon the military arrives and establishes martial law claiming there is a deadly virus contaminating the area. This is the latest installment in a long line of awful monster movies directed by Tibor Takacs. It joins Rats (2003) Mega Snake (2007) and Ice Spiders (2007) in his pantheon of projectile vomit.

Spiders (review)
What has happened to America’s cheesy film industry? Where is the pride of our grade-z filmmakers? Does no one care anymore about making decent bad movies? You might imagine that crap impresario Tibor Takács -- who has such titles as NYC: Tornado Terror, Mega Snake, and, yes, Ice Spiders to his credit -- would know how to make a flick about space spiders genetically engineered by former Soviet eggheads and now out of control in the New York City subway filmed entirely on a Bulgarian backlot with mannequin-like actors mean something. But he can’t even be bothered to ladle on a preposterous theme about the balkanization of mad science in the wake of the breakup of the Ussr, or weave in a laughable motif about cultural environmental anxieties over global warming and overpopulated humanity encroaching on the natural world. My God, man, (said the frustrated critic and lover...

Spiders 3D [Nychff 2012]
Alright guys, I’ll level with you – I hate spiders. Everyone has that one creepy, crawly thing that grosses them out to no end, and the thought of a little fat fuzzy black arachnid scurrying by my toes gives me instantaneous chills. Just one of those things that isn’t for me, yeah? But don’t think I hide my eyes when they’re around or anything, as I love catching Eight Legged Freaks whenever it’s running on syndication, so I took Tibor Takács’ Spiders 3D as a welcome festival opener.

A throwback to the B-Movie creature features of old, undoubtably having scientists meddle with something small, growing it to gargantuan sizes only to cause destruction? Sounds like a good time to me, especially since Tibor is a veteren of these types of flicks, such as Ice Spiders, Mega Snake, Kraken: Tentacles Of The Deep, Sabrina The Teenage Witch…...

Could Spiders 3D Be As Great As This New One-Sheet Hints?
Tibor Takács isn't typically known for crafting what could be considered as “great” films. Ice Spiders, Mega Snake, The Black Hole, Mansquito... we're not exactly discussing blockbuster magic here. However, there have been some recent rumblings of a potential theatrical release for Spiders 3D, and after spotting this brand new one-sheet for the flick, I'll confess my curiosity: the pic you're about to glimpse below looks downright bad ass. Spiders 3D still lacks an official release date, or any serious release details for that matter. What we do know is post-production is rumored to be reaching a close, and regardless of what the film does or doesn't offer, we'll likely be seeing it soon, on one platform or another.

This Spiders 3D One-Sheet is Epic
Tibor Takacs loves him some nature-run-amok action.  The man who gave us titles like Mega Snake, Rats, Mansquito and Ice Spiders (not to mention The Gate) is back with Spiders 3D.

The flick is in post-production (so says the IMDb, but I swear I've been hearing about this damn movie forever and figured it was done by now) and we found a spiffy new one-sheet.  You can find a larger version after the jump.

Spiders 3D comes to us from Millennium Films, the company behind this week's release The Expendables 2 and the forthcoming The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D.  Maybe they'll squeak this one into theaters?

Universal Pictures & SyFy Channel Form Theatrical Film Banner
While they're usually more concerned with making wacky, low budget, made-for-tv sci-fi films, it looks like SyFy Ventures is ready to step up their game. Today the long-running science fiction channel announced a partnership with Universal Pictures to launch SyFy Films, a company that will create films for theatrical release to be distributed by Universal. Sticking to the usual genres of sci-fi, fantasy, supernatural and horror the new banner is looking to deliver two films every year starting in 2012. Like the rest of you, I'm hoping these films will be far superior to SyFy's usual film content like Sharktopus and Mega Snake. Read on! SyFy president Dave Howe and executive vice president of programming Mark Stern said: "We know there is an incredible consumer appetite for genre content as proven by the top grossing box office films. Partnering our brand with the theatrical talent of Universal Pictures, a ...

A Universal Syfy Mashup
There’s big news in Genre Town, kids.

In an effort to improve its bottom line and cash in on the public's box office-validated desire for genre entertainment, Universal Pictures is partnering with the Syfy cable network to create Syfy Films, a production company that will specialize in horror, fantasy and science fiction movies with budgets from $5 million to $25 million.

Syfy president Dave Howe said yesterday, "We know that the sci-fi genre is huge when it comes to the Hollywood box office, and we believe there is a real gap in the market when it comes to mid-range budget movies . . . There has been a proliferation of these movies at the box office and we believe we can do even better in the space."

Universal, who's trying to recover from a fiscally disappointing year, has recently had a regime change. Current studio chairman Adam Fogelson said, "Universal and Syfy have discussed...

What has Eight Legs and Three Dimensions? Spider 3D!
Nu Image is certainly no stranger to giant spiders, having produced the fun 2000 nature gone amok flick Spiders and its much less fun sequel. Its sister company Millenium Films is getting in on the current 3D craze with the Nic Cage 3D revenge flick Drive Angry. Tibor Tackacs is no stranger to monster spiders either, having directed Syfy's Ice Spiders. Sounds like a perfect recipe for Spider 3D.

A reader tipped me off that Nu Image has updated its website with artwork and a little information regarding its latest creature feature, simply titled Spider 3D. As you can probably imagine, yes, it is a 3D spider flick.

"A new species of poisonous spider is discovered in the caves of Afghanistan and inadvertently makes its way to New York City, where it mutates to gigantic proportions and wreaks havoc on the entire city."

Tibor Tackacs has spent the past several years...

Zone Horror returns to its ‘Horror Channel’ roots
Zone Horror, part of Chello Zone’s UK channels portfolio, is returning to its former identity as the Horror Channel.

The network, jointly owned by multi-channel broadcaster Chello Zone and CBS Studios International following a partnership deal signed last October, was originally known as the Horror Channel until it was rebranded in 2006. The channel will revert to its former name on April 5th, following the rebranding of Chello Zone’s themed entertainment channels as CBS Action (previously Zone Thriller), CBS Drama (Zone Romantica) and CBS Reality (Zone Reality) in November. On-screen, the network will be branded simply as Horror. Chris Sharp, Chello Zone’s chief programming officer, said:

Following last year’s successful rebranding of our other UK entertainment channels, we were aiming to create a brand refresh for Zone Horror that reflects similar design values, without alienating the dedicated audience base who appreciate the channel’s origins. The new look is clean and modern,...

UK's Zone Horror Reverting to Its Horror Channel Name
For many years we here in the States have looked with envy upon our brothers and sisters across the pond who have been fortunate enough to have their own "Horror Channel", even if in 2006 it was rebranded as "Zone Horror". Now, though, it looks like they're reverting to the old name effective next Monday.

C21 Media reports that as a result of the Chello Zone and CBS Studios International partnership deal made last October, the channel will revert to its former name on April 5, following the rebranding of Chello Zone's themed entertainment channels as CBS Action (previously Zone Thriller), CBS Drama (Zone Romantica), and CBS Reality (Zone Reality) in November. Trailer: Mega Piranha | The Greatest Thing You Will See All Day. Trust Me.
Oh, SyFy. I love you so. I love when you're good and when you're bad. When you're good ("Battlestar Galactica"), you're amazing. When you're bad (everything else fucking ever), you're in many ways even better.

The SyFy network, formerly known as The Sci-Fi Channel until they decided that that moniker was entirely too normal and not clunky or retarded enough, has a list of shitty sci-fi films longer than a Mega Snake. It's like they're collaborating with Asylum Films in an ongoing effort to out-shit each successive film. They release a new original picture every month, and I'm delightedly unashamed to admit that I've seen almost all of them. In fact, beginning next month, we'll be running a new series where I review each and every deliciously terrible one of them. It won't be the first time. You're fucking welcome.

Anyway, they follow a simple formula: A has-been star, a...
