Howard Hawks’ “The Dawn Patrol,” from 1930, shows soldiers and officers cracking up from the cruelty of their missions — and shows the ones who manage not to, singing and clowning with an exuberance that suggests the rictus of a death mask. The lineup for Cannes 2017 has finally been announced, and it’s a doozy. From the inevitable return of Michael Haneke to the shocking inclusion of television (albeit television from celebrated Cannes alumni David Lynch and Jane Campion), the 70th edition of the world’s most prestigious film festival promises to have something for everyone.
We asked our panel of critics to name the Cannes premiere they’re most excited to see, and their answers were unsurprisingly all over the map.

Mohit Takalkar
Pune-based theatre director Mohit Takalkar’s debut feature The Bright Day will premiere today at the Toronto International Film Festival. Mohit tells us about his foray into filmmaking:
What is The Bright Day about?
The Bright Day speaks out the confusions and dilemmas that the young generation faces in the process of finding the path they want to tread. The film explores this journey through strong cinematic imagery. It is shot in different terrains of India – City, Desert, Banks of Ganges; thus depicting imagery and reflections of inner and outer world beautifully. The film also works on spiritual and experiential layers to deal with the complexity of mind. A film of chance encounters, shifting perspectives and unexpected insights, The Bright Day is an intensely personal cinematic experience that is also universal.
What was the starting point for the film?
The starting point for the film was my own life.

India's first stereoscopic 3D animated feature film Krishna Aur Kans has been declared 'Tax Free' in 6 states namely Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, Kerala, Chhattisgarh & West Bengal on the first day of its release itself. Further key states like Delhi, Haryana, Karnataka, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh are also strongly considering the proposal.
This dual impact of Tax-Free status in major territories and the release of the film close to Janmasthami is working well for this animation film. The film has voiceovers by Juhi Chawla, Manoj Bajpayee, Om Puri, Prachi Save, Anupam Kher, A.K. Hangal, Mukesh Khanna etc. Directed by Vikram Veturi and produced by Reliance Animation, Krishna aur Kans has been distributed by Reliance Entertainment.

He has over two decades in the film industry and more than 70 movies to his credit, but southern superstar Nagarjuna is in no mood to sit on his laurels. He is busy doing experimental cinema, plans to open a film institute down south and doesn't want to waste time by accepting Bollywood offers. 'I had a nice roller-coaster ride in the industry. I have learnt many lessons. There were many ups and downs and, thankfully, I survived them all. And every experience has been very enriching and satisfactory,' Nagarjuna told Ians in an interview over phone from Hyderabad. Gautaman BhaskaranRaavananDirector: Mani RatnamActors: Vikram, Prithviraj, Aishwarya Rai, Prabhu, Priyamani and KarthikRating: ** Mani Ratnam’s cinema is invariably a feast for the eye, and his choice of cinematographers like P.C. Sriram, Rajiv Menon and Santosh Sivan have turned the screen into visual opulence, spinning the script into a radiantly moving imagery. No quarrels on this point. But a film has to transcend that barrier between the eye and the mind. Otherwise, it will quite possibly remain a string of lovely shots no better or worse than an advertisement campaign ...
