Not to be confused with the 1986 Gary Paulsen novel that was on your fifth-grade reading list, Adam Green's 2007 slasher "Hatchet" was intended to be an homage to the plentiful stalk-and-kill movies from the 1980s. The first "Hatchet" takes place deep in the swamps of Louisana where feckless city-dwellers get lost while taking a swamp tour. They trade stories of Victor Crowley, a local kid with facial differences who, years ago, was trapped in a burning house set ablaze by prankster teens. Crowley was accidentally killed by his father when he recklessly used a hatchet to free him from the fire. Victor's spirit is now said to haunt the swamp and murder interlopers. Of course, Victor will appear to start the predicted murders.
Victor Crowley was played by stuntman Kane Hodder, perhaps best known for playing the masked killer Jason Voorhees in "Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood,...

As soon as Saw X, the tenth entry in the Saw franchise (you can read our review Here), was released last September, franchise producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules were already talking about the potential of a Saw XI. The official announcement came in December, along with a release date: September 27th. But over the last few months, the filmmakers have come to realize they need some extra time to make Saw XI something special, so the release has been pushed back a year, to September 26, 2025. So Lionsgate has unveiled a teaser trailer asking fans to play the waiting game, and you can check it out in the embed above.

She Came Back: Amybeth McNulty of Stranger Things and Anne with an E stars in psychological thriller
About four and a half years ago, it was announced that Amybeth McNulty of the Netflix shows Anne with an E and Stranger Things (although she hadn’t been on Stranger Things yet at the time) had signed on to star in a suspense thriller called Maternal. If you’ve been wondering what happened with that project, we finally have an update to share with you today: Maternal has been retitled She Came Back, and it’s now available to watch through Dark Matter TV, Apple, Vudu, Google Play, and Microsoft Xbox. It can be rented for $3.99 or purchased for $9.99.
Part of the reason for the long delay is the fact that Maternal started filming in early 2020, then the production got disrupted by the pandemic lockdowns. The project had to be put back together at a later date so filming could be finished.

20 years ago, Saw made an indelible impact on the horror genre. Not only did it usher in the so-called “torture porn” subgenre that would become synonymous with the aughts, but it also launched the career of filmmaker James Wan, who has firmly cemented his place among the masters of horror with follow-ups like The Conjuring and Insidious.
In the two decades since, the lucrative franchise has spawned nine sequels — 2005’s Saw II, 2006’s Saw III, 2007’s Saw IV, 2008’s Saw V, 2009’s Saw VI, 2010’s Saw: The Final Chapter, 2017’s Jigsaw, 2021’s Spiral: From the Book of Saw, and 2023’s Saw X — with a worldwide box office total of over $1 billion.
Despite being often maligned by detractors for its mindless sadism, fans are just as much invested in the series’ soap opera-esque melodrama as the innovative death traps. Formulaic though the general plots may be, the non-linear storyline is deceptively...

Saw is the series that just won’t stop. Not only did Saw X wind up making over $100 million worldwide, but it also earned the franchise’s best reviews since the original. Indeed, Tobin Bell received raves for his shockingly empathetic portrayal of Jigsaw, and in welcome news to fans of the franchise, Sax XI is already in production for a release this fall! But, how does the entire series rank? You can check out our Saw Movies Ranked list below – then let us know how you would rank the movies by leaving a comment!

Yesterday, the new sequel was officially announced, complete with a release date: Saw XI will be reaching theatres on September 27, 2024. When fans saw that announcement, they understandably jumped to the conclusion that the new film is going to be written by the team of Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg, since they wrote not only Saw X but also Jigsaw and Spiral: From the Book of Saw. Two years have passed since we heard that filming had wrapped on The Cello (formerly known as simply Cello), the latest horror project from director Darren Lynn Bousman – whose credits include Saw II, Saw III, Saw IV, and Spiral: From the Book of Saw. What began as a simple two-hander about strangers chained in a squalid bathroom, enduring the twisted games of a mysterious tormentor, has evolved into an intricate saga spanning nearly twenty years and ten gruesome films. With every new "Saw" movie, the traps become bigger and more brutal, the timelines increasingly jumbled, and the twists even more mind-boggling. Each "Saw" entry delves deeper into (and complicates) the maniacal Jigsaw philosophy that forces people to confront their sins and appreciate the life they've been given.
Often regarded as part of the controversial horror subgenre "torture porn" (even though we may need to retire that term forever), the "Saw" films feature graphic depictions of mutilation and extreme violence in elaborate devices that are not for the faint of heart. While it can be daunting to tackle such a visceral and temporally complex series, there is really only one solid path to follow when...

No good villain is ever truly gone, especially in horror movies. This September saw the return of Tobin Bell as John Kramer, a.k.a. “Jigsaw,” the trap-making serial killer of the Saw movies, with the release of Saw X. This is despite the fact that Kramer has been dead since the end of Saw III, which came out back in 2006. But a little thing like death never stopped the Saw franchise. Instead of literally bringing Kramer back from the dead, the subsequent sequels continued Bell’s participation with devices like flashbacks. Hell, even Saw IV played a trick on audiences by staging a lot of its action at the same time as Saw III.
One of those post-Kramer sequels celebrates its 15th anniversary this year: Saw V, which featured Costas Mandylor as Detective Mark Hoffman, a murderous cop who became Jigsaw’s protégé and continued his campaign of bloodshed.

The chronology of the "Saw" movies is massively complicated, and only the most dedicated researchers have dared to map out when certain events occur. Everything surrounds the vengeful trap-builder Jigsaw, aka John Kramer (Tobin Bell) a character who actually died at the end of Darren Lynn Bouseman's "Saw III," but who still appeared in several sequels thereafter. Baffling chronologies have been a feature of the "Saw" movies from the start, with James Wan's 2004 original told mostly in flashback. Indeed, one of those flashbacks also had a flashback in it.
As far as a casual observer might tell, the films take place in the following order: "Saw," then the new "Saw X," then "Saw II." "Saw III" and "Saw IV" take place over roughly the same period, with interacting timelines. The rest seem to take place more or less numerically, although each one features additional flashbacks and appearances from Bell.

A new chapter in the “Saw” franchise is here.
In preparation for the milestone tenth film, we have a rundown of where you can see the previous “Saw” just in time for “Saw X.”
It all started in 2004 as an idea conjured up by James Wan and Leigh Whannell, two bestie Australian filmmakers who were fresh out of film school and eager to make a name for themselves in Hollywood.
The first “Saw,” which Whannell wrote and Wan directed, premiered on Oct. 29, 2004. Whannell, who also starred as Adam in the first film, went on to direct the next two films. “Saw III” ended up becoming the highest-earning film from the franchise ($165 million globally), per The Numbers.
The inspiration behind the film was rooted in one of Whannell’s real-life experiences. During an interview with the Av Club, Whannell said that at the age of 24, he started to have severe migraines,...

Warning: this post will contain spoilers for "Saw X."
Throughout the 10 extant "Saw" movies, there have been at least 94 on-screen deaths, most of them quite gruesome. A few people do manage to escape the death traps that Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) locked them into, but many of the vengeful villain's victims aren't so lucky. Audiences have witnessed human bodies being ripped apart, burned, or colorfully torn to pieces. And we all have our favorites, don't we? Ranking the traps and/or deaths in the "Saw" movies is a common practice among horror fans. /Film even ranked all of the franchise's deaths back in 2017, when there were only 81 to sift through.
Many might agree that the "reverse bear trap" from the very first "Saw" is probably the best one. Indeed, it was so notorious, that it would be brought back for "Saw VI" and "Saw 3D." In the latter film, it finally managed to kill its wearer.

The tenth installment in Lionsgate’s long-running horror franchise, Saw X is playing in theaters nationwide, and Lionsgate is surely happy with the box office results over the weekend.
Saw X scared up a reported $18 million in its opening weekend here in the United States, with the new movie’s worldwide total sitting at $29,300,000 just days into its release.
That $18 million domestic number marks the franchise’s highest opening weekend since Saw 3D back in 2010, and it also matches the $18 million opening of the original Saw in 2004.
An $18 million opening weekend is a far cry from the franchise-high $33 million opening of Saw III, mind you, but it’s also the strongest the series has been in over 10 years. The decision to ditch the convoluted continuity of the later films in the franchise and instead bring back Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith with a simplified, back to basics approach was a smart one.

It’s hard to overstate just how big the “Saw” movies were in the 2000s. The original low-budget horror film is about a serial killer who forces his victims to mutilate themselves to survive his deathtraps was such a hit that every single year, a new sequel would come out for Halloween season. And every single year, it printed money.
But although the many “Saw” films rely on an easily repeatable premise, they’re not formulaic films. Indeed, they’re highly unusual in their scope and ambition, telling a multilayered story across many timelines simultaneously, with a vast mythology and a complex moral code. There’s a genuine ingenuity to most of the “Saw” movies that can take your breath away, whether you get wrapped up in its grotesque world or simply marvel at how ambitious it gets.

Hello, Den of Geek readers. We would like to play a little game.
When James Wan and Leigh Whannell unleashed the first Saw in 2004, you might’ve thought the franchise was all about grisly murders and psychological nonsense. But if you still hold true to that opinion, then you have not been paying attention to the backstory and police procedural that accompanied the carnage. With each entry, the Saw franchise embraced flashbacks, flash-forwards, and flash-sideways, becoming more convoluted than that other 2000s phenomenon, Lost.
And now that Saw X is in theaters, you realize that you don’t understand the story at all. How can there be a 10th movie when John Kramer died in Saw III? Didn’t Jigsaw reboot the series in 2017? Did anyone actually see Spiral: From the Book of Saw?
Den of Geek readers, your attention to the bloody fun parts of Saw has left you unprepared.

When you think of Sundance movies, you usually think of quirky, optimistic or melodramatic coming-of-age stories. Films like “Manchester by the Sea,” “Coda” or “The Big Sick.” But the movie that spawned the most successful franchise from its Sundance debut is none of those things. In January 2004, Sundance audiences were knocked on their collective butts by “Saw,” an out-of-nowhere horror flick from two unknown Australian filmmakers.
Director James Wan and screenwriter Leigh Whannell’s “Saw” offered a deceptively simple premise of two desperate men chained together in an empty room with little idea of how they got there or how to get out.
Starring Cary Elwes and Danny Glover, Monica Potter and a pre-“Lost” Michael Emerson, “Saw” inspired a new wave of grindhouse horror, films that reveled in old-school gore and a certain Rube Goldberg mentality to the kills beyond just attractive teenagers being picked off one by one.

You can bet those same people will be back to devour every morsel of “Saw X,” director Kevin Gruetert’s third at-bat for the series (he also helmed “Saw VI” and “Saw 3D”), starring Og Jigsaw Tobin Bell and set between the...

In 2007, the "Saw" franchise took a very big swing with the aim of setting the movies up for years to come. Darren Lynn Bousman returned to the director's chair for the third time with "Saw IV," which aimed to move beyond Tobin Bell's John Kramer by giving Jigsaw a path forward without the man who started these twisted, bloody games in the first place. The film's ending not only offers one of the biggest twists in the entire series — but also one of the most important. Divorced of everything that came after, it was a big, bold, critical change in direction.
For those who may need a brief refresher, Bell plays the central figure of the films as John Kramer, aka Jigsaw, a man with incurable cancer who dedicates himself to "saving" people in a way that he sees fit. He selects people who are ungrateful for the life...

Welcome to the Ghostface Glossary, a guide to every horror reference and nod throughout the first five films of the Scream franchise.
After a lot of pausing, rewinding, and zooming in, as well as researching, we’re catching all of the many horror-specific references Williamson, Craven, and Co. included in this beloved postmodern slasher franchise. If we’ve forgotten any glaring ones, kindly let us know.
This guide will exclude homages from previous Scream films and their respective sequels— we’re only looking at outside horror franchises and inspirations, because any red-blooded Ghostface fan is likely already aware of those. (Goes without saying that the beloved faux franchise ‘Stab’(s) 1-8 will also not be counted, since, even though our neon green ‘Stab’ t-shirts and mock VHS tapes feel very real, it’s still a very fake franchise). If we’ve forgotten any glaring ones, kindly let us know.

Alright everyone, we’ve got all the spookies of October out of our system. Time to turn our eye to Hulu’s list of new releases for November 2022 to celebrate a new fall tradition of…hunky male dancers?
That’s right, Hulu’s biggest original title for November 2022 is Welcome to Chippendales on Nov. 22. This limited series stars Kumail Nanjiani (Eternals) as Somen “Steve” Banerjee, the real life founder of the original Chippendales club of exotic male dancers. After hits like The Dropout and Pam & Tommy, Hulu likely has high hopes for this one.
The other big original series of note this month is FX’s Fleishman is in Trouble on Nov. 17. This is based on a 2019 novel of the same name and stars Jesse Eisenberg as the titular Toby Fleischman in crisis. Before that, Hulu is teaming up with ABC for some true crime docuseries like Where is Private Dulaney?...

If it's Halloween, it must be "Saw." The franchise, first conceived by genre maestro James Wan and scribe Leigh Whannell, set the horror world ablaze. So much so, that by the time the fourth entry hit theaters in 2007, Lionsgate Films positioned the franchise as part and parcel of the Halloween season itself. Like Michael Myers or Freddy Krueger, franchise antagonist John Kramer, otherwise known as Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) became a horror icon. Often only heard in voiceover through the use of Billy the Puppet — an indelible piece of horror iconography — John Kramer radically subverted horror expectations.
John Kramer, dying from colon cancer, develops a series of tests for those he perceives as taking their lives for granted. He traps ostensible participants in deadly scenarios, forcing them to make difficult choices to survive. While the series postures as some kind of moral imperative, it mostly serves as a series of Grand Guignol exhibitions of outrageous,...

A new movie in the “Saw” horror franchise will begin production soon and is slated to be released by Lionsgate on Oct. 27, 2023.
Kevin Greutert, who directed “Saw IV” and “Saw: The Final Chapter,” is directing the new, still-untitled film from Twisted Pictures. Greutert has been attached to the franchise from the very beginning as an editor on the first five films and “Jigsaw” in 2017.
The plot for the feature is being kept under wraps, but producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules are promising plenty of bloody and ingenious traps and a new mystery to solve.
“We have been listening to what the fans have been asking for and are hard at work planning a movie that ‘Saw’ aficionados and horror fans alike will love,” Burg and Koules said in a joint statement. “Part of that is giving the reins to Kevin Greutert, director of ‘Saw VI,’ which is still one...

The seventh film in the "Saw" series was called "The Final Chapter," but, as we learned from "Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter," "Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday," and "Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare," final is never final. Since the release of "Saw 3D: The Final Chapter" in October of 2010, there have been two additional films in the series, "Jigsaw" in 2017, and "Spiral" in 2021, revealing that audiences just can't get enough of gory death puzzles and deliciously horrid mutilation.

(This article contains some spoilers for “Spiral: From the Book of Saw”)
I would say that, overall, “Spiral: From the Book of Saw” is a worthy successor for the “Saw” franchise. If you’re gonna insist on making one of these that doesn’t follow up on any of the stuff from the original seven, this is a good way to go about it. Because it really is “Saw,” but in a new way.
But despite that, and despite the fact that “Spiral” was directed by Darren Lynn Bousman — who directed three previous “Saw” movies — the film makes a pretty glaring factual error. Midway through the film, one of the cops wonders aloud if this is another Jigsaw disciple. Chris Rock’s character, Detective Zeke Banks, doesn’t buy it.
“John Kramer never targeted cops,” Banks says, referring to the original Jigsaw killer played by Tobin Bell.
This is categorically not true,...

(Spoiler alert: Do not read on if you haven’t seen “Spiral.”)
After taking an almost 15-year break from the “Saw” franchise, Darren Bousman is back with “Spiral: From the Book of Saw,” which means he had to come up with new, creative traps and kills for the victims in the film.
“We leaned into Bdsm a lot,” Bousman told TheWrap. “Since the killer was no longer Jon Cramer, we wanted him to have a different aesthetic. It’s really subtle — we wanted the traps to have more Bdsm feel. The tongue trap in the first scene was from a Bdsm website… I swear to God I am on every FBI watch list possible.”
He added: ‘It’s been increasingly harder to figure out the traps, not only because some of them don’t end up working, but because everything has been done. I would be like, what if we did this,...

A month after the release of the trailer for “Spiral: From the Book of Saw,” rapper 21 Savage, who serves as executive producer of the film’s soundtrack, has dropped a music video for the song “Spiral.” (See behind-the-scenes photos from the shoot below.)
The film, which opens in over 2,000 theaters on May 14, stars Chris Rock (who’s also executive producer), Samuel L. Jackson, Max Minghella and Marisol Nichols.
The song “Spiral” was produced by Slaughter Gang’s Kid Hazel and marks 21 Savage’s first new release since “Savage Mode II” with Metro Boomin in Oct. 2020. The soundtrack album, meanwhile, is being released by Slaughter Gang/Epic Records. Composer Charlie Clouser (Nine Inch Nails) did the score.
The video for “Spiral” was shot in the Saw escape room in Las Vegas and intercuts footage from the movie. Savage and the music figure prominently in the Lionsgate movie and campaigns to promote its theatrical run.

Lionsgate has released the first full-length trailer for Spiral: From the Book of Saw, the latest film in the Saw franchise, starring Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson. Originally scheduled to be released last spring, the horror movie was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and will now be released May 14th, 2021 in theaters.
Spiral follows Detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks (Rock), his police veteran father (Jackson), and Zeke’s rookie partner William Schenk (Max Minghella) as they investigate a series of murders that are eerily reminiscent of the Jigsaw Killer’s grisly crimes.
