Emily is a quiet and shy woman who lives alone in her flat in a muted and restrained existence. However when a musician moves into the flat next to her, Emily finds her quiet life threatened. Her reaction though is not one of annoyance but one where she finds herself starting to connect with this man through the noise they share through their common wall.
What I assumed was going to be a confrontational relationship at the start of the film turned into something much more imaginative and interesting. It is hard to describe but the two protagonists start a relationship through their wall and it is to Smith's credit that he has made this relationship one that is convincing and one that the viewer cares about. It sounds easy but it really isn't and he does a great job of building it and taking this "relationship" through the courting period and their first "fight". Plot wise it is very clever as it looks at the unspoken truth between those that share walls we can all hear one another but we never let on or talk about it (I never told my neighbours I could hear them have sex and they never told me we just could!).
Young does a great job of developing her character and coming out of her shell and this really helps the development of the relationship by replacing and supporting it. The musician is good but obviously has less to do but the two of them manage a great chemistry despite not actually sharing more than a second or two of film. All credit to Smith though for having the idea and then pulling it off, how it lost out to Cubs for the BBC3 New Talent award 2006 is beyond me.
