Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2024 is missing a certain amount of original series firepower. In the place of a blockbuster like The Handmaid’s Tale or Shōgun, however, is some content diversity.
The first of the month sees the premiere of four-episode British series Shardlake. This mystery drama takes place during the reign of Henry VIII and features none other than Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean) investigating a murder. Other series of note this month include the Korean drama Uncle Samsik on May 15.
Movies are bit more interesting on Hulu in May. Teen comedy Prom Dates premieres on May 3. That will be followed by the 2023 Adam Drive film Ferrari on May 24. Before all that though is the real heavy hitter. You can watch Austin Butler’s acclaimed performance as The King in Elvis as early as May 1. Peter Farrelly made his name in Hollywood by directing raunchy comedies such as "Dumb and Dumber" and "There's Something About Mary" alongside his brother, Bobby Farrelly. Since going solo, however, Peter Farrelly has been making more serious fare such as the Oscar-winning "Green Book." But now, he's back with an R-rated comedy in the form of "Ricky Stanicky." With an A-list cast and a ridiculous premise, it looks like a throwback in every conceivable way. Check out the trailer above for yourself.
Here, Farrelly is re-teaming with Zac Efron, who worked with him on "The Greatest Beer Run Ever." While Efron is coming off of the most serious performance of his career in "The Iron Claw," this sees him going back to his comedic roots, having previously starred in films like "Neighbors" and "Dirty Grandpa." Meanwhile, John Cena is getting to flex his comedic chops as well as the titular character.

Fresh off winning the Audience Award at this year’s Toronto Film Festival, “American Fiction” lays out its cynically comic premise in its first trailer. Cord Jefferson’s directorial debut features Jeffrey Wright as a struggling novelist who watches as his competition profits from Black entertainment that plays into cultural stereotypes and offensive tropes to the huzzahs of white cultural gatekeepers. In a moment of “If you can’t beat them, join them,” he uses a pen name to write a conventionally stereotypical memoir only to watch the book become a cultural focal point and a best-seller.

[This story contains spoilers from Netflix’s Murder Mystery 2.]
Adam Sandler has just expanded his coterie of comedic filmmakers with Murder Mystery 2.
The new Netflix action comedy is a follow-up to the 2019 Kyle Newacheck-directed film, with this one counting Jeremy Garelick at the helm. Sandler and Jennifer Aniston reprise their roles as Nick and Audrey Spitz, now working as private detectives, who find themselves embroiled in a case that leads them to Paris after their friend, the Maharajah (Adeel Akhtar), is kidnapped at his own wedding. Mark Strong, Mélanie Laurent and Jodie Turner-Smith also star in the sequel that debuted in the top spot on the streamer’s English-films list.
Garelick directed such films as 2015’s The Wedding Ringer, an early starring vehicle for Kevin Hart, and 2020 teen comedy The Binge, but Murder Mystery 2 definitely includes his biggest action set pieces yet, which makes sense when a movie involves someone getting...

2015's "Jupiter Ascending" was meant to be a glorious return to ambitious sci-fi for Lilly and Lana Wachowski, the duo that brought us "The Matrix," one of the most significant genre films of all time. Unfortunately, things didn't go as planned for the filmmakers, as the film went on to become one of the biggest bombs of the decade, barely making back its massive production budget in ticket sales, representing huge losses for Warner Bros.
But what went wrong? The movie had a great A-list cast led by Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis, not to mention eventual Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne. It also had the Wachowskis behind the camera and immense financial resources. Yet, the pieces of the puzzle that ultimately came together don't form a picture that audiences were all that interested in -- at least not nearly enough to justify the film's massive budget.

A weirdly tame, let’s-all-get-wasted riff on “The Purge” from the team behind such solid youth-focused comedies as “Banana Split” and “Big Time Adolescence,” Hulu original “The Binge” imagines an alternate America where all drugs and alcohol are illegal, except during a 12-hour window each year, at which time anything goes. , treating intoxication as the punchline rather than the setup for what should have been a more subversive satire.
If only the country’s Puritan forefathers, or the teetotalers behind Prohibition, could see where their influence has steered us! Screenwriter Jordan VanDina (who’s also working on the “Animaniacs” reboot) has a few genuinely rowdy ideas up his sleeve — including an epic case of a driving under the influence and a shootout involving the world’s smallest crossbow — all of which is heightened by some reasonably inspired improvisation, especially from Mvp Vince Vaughn as a wildly inappropriate high school principal.

"To our first sip of alcohol." Hulu has released the first official trailer for a comedy called The Binge, from filmmaker Jeremy Garelick (The Wedding Ringer). The concept basically takes the premise of The Purge, but changes it into a comedy about alcohol. Set in a time where all drugs and alcohol are illegal, the only day anyone can participate in the "fun" is on The Binge day. Skyler Gisondo, Dexter Darden, and Eduardo Franco star as Griffin, Hags, and Andrew, three high school seniors who are trying to get to the best party in town where all their dreams will come true. Hopefully. As long as they can avoid their crazed principal, played by Vince Vaughn. This is one of those ridiculous-in-every-way party comedies that Hollywood still loves to make, but this one is going straight to Hulu. Probably best since it looks bad. A bit too wild & crazy.

On Monday, people can drop off materials to make the face masks and build them at the Greater Syracuse Soundstage in New York. Volunteers will be given gloves and disinfectant to assemble the masks and will be situated in different rooms to ensure proper social distancing.
Volunteers with 3D printers are also encouraged to help out if possible and print materials for the face masks. The parts can be dropped off at the Greater Syracuse Soundstage, and volunteers will be reimbursed for any materials they buy.
Requested materials for the 3D-printed masks include Pla filament, foam tape that is 3/4 inch wide by 1/2 inch thick, elastic bands that are 1/2 inch wide, super glue, rubbing alcohol or other disinfectants, .005 inch thick poly sheets, 12×12” poly bags and vinyl gloves and face masks.
