Very biased documentary.

Warning: Spoilers
Michael Shea, the writer, director and star of this documentary is a liberal guy. He says this right off the bat, and he also says he does not understand conservatives, despite that he had voted republican two out of the last three elections. He says that his purpose here is to prove to himself that republicans aren't as bad as he thinks, but obviously he knew he didn't want to do that. He wanted to prove himself right to the audience by taking only the religious republicans and making it seem to be the norm.

Well, I've pretty much explained the premise. Michael Shea goes to several states that voted Republican in the 2004 election because he couldn't believe anybody would vote for Bush again. He interviews about 10 groups of people, mainly ones involved in the church or Conservatives for the betterment of mankind, who are going to be religious. In the end, what we get is 80 minutes of Michael furthering his point of view through the extreme right republicans.

There needed to be more interviews here and not so spread out. There was probably a total of 5 long interviews, and maybe 10 or less snippets of other interviews. In between most of the interviews we get long boring scenes of driving where Michael gives his opinion and pretty much bashes how crazy these people are. The movie is called "Red State", but he only goes to 6 or 7 of the red states, and only interviews people either associated with the churches, or people found in religious places (such as a giant cross).

In the end, I'm not sure exactly what Michael proved. He proved from the 6 red states he went to that at least 15 people involved in the church all had the viewpoint that the constitution is less important than the Ten Commandments. Of the people he talks to, he only finds one Liberal, who has recently voted Republican, that doesn't really know why he switched. I'm not quite sure what he was trying to prove with this interview, but whatever it was, it didn't work.

The political parties are about many issues, but Michael is focused on two. Gay marriage and abortion are the only topics brought up, nothing on actual ways of running the government. All of the very religious people interviewed were against gay marriage and abortion...okay, so how about we go onto other issues?

Overall, this is a biased interview with only a few very religious people. Michael Shea is a poor interviewer who seemed to make up questions as he went along. Few of the important questions were asked and even the biased and very one sided Michael Moore makes fairer documentaries. This was awful!

My rating: BOMB out of ****. 80 mins. Not rated, contains some language.
