Exclusive: Felix Van Groeningen collaborator to “move aside”.
In a move that has taken the Belgian industry by surprise, veteran producer Dirk Impens has confirmed that he is closing down his production company Menuet and is planning to quit the film business.
Impens is the highly respected producer behind Oscar nominated films such as Stijn Coninx’s Daens and Felix van Groeningen’s Broken Circle Breakdown.
Contacted by Screen, Impens explained that after three decades in the business it was time to take a break.
“Old man, move aside,” 59-year-old Impens commented.
“What could be worse than becoming a grumpy old man who keeps on telling (people) how things were so much better in the old days? Never ! It’s been a wonderful 30 years, thanks to many super talented people and a very dedicated small staff. 30 years ago I did what I believed was the right thing, sometimes against all odds! Distributor plots move into genre and family movies, beginning with Asghar Farhadi’s upcoming thriller.
Italian distribution company Lucky Red is planning to ramp up its production operation, with a focus on genre and family movies.
At an event held in Rome yesterday (June 26) to mark the company’s 30th anniversary, founder and CEO Andrea Occhipinti said: “Distribution will remain our core business, but we want to become one of the most important production companies in Italy.”
“Production may be a good way not to be too dependent on acquisitions, since it’s becoming harder to get the good movies. Instead a good Italian film can make a big difference at the box office”.
One of the most prestigious projects that Lucky Red is co-producing is Asghar Farhadi’s untitled Spanish-language thriller starring Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem and Ricardo Darin (pictured, top).
As Screen announced during Cannes, the $12-13m project is a French-Spanish-Italian co-production with Lucky Red...

James Hoare in 'Picture Wheel'.
After graduating from Waapa in 2007, actor turned writer-director David O.Donnell moved to Sydney, where he met Nida student Alex Russell through another actor friend, Ande Cunningham.
The trio has been working together ever since, forming their own company, Five Lip Films, with two of Russell.s fellow Nida students, James Elliot and Sarah-Jane McAllan.
All five are in development on their own projects. Last year Cunningham directed short film Oranges Don.t Grow on Trees, featuring Russell and Sarah Snook..
.Our tastes really do contrast quite a bit, generally,. says O.Donnell. .We don.t agree on most films. Even the name we couldn.t agree on (laughs)...
The group finally settled on Five Lip Films (after a stint as Rockpool Films) because .it was five of us giving each other lip, disagreeing with each other...

A version of this story first appeared in the Nominations Preview issue of TheWrap’s Oscar magazine. Has there ever been a Best Original Song race as crowded, as competitive and as spirited as this year’s? That’s hard to imagine. Sure, there was 1936, when the nominees included the stone-cold standards “The Way You Look Tonight,” “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” “Pennies From Heaven” and “When Did You Leave Heaven.” Or 1945, when the 14 — count ‘em, 14 — nominees included “Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive,” “It Might as Well Be Spring” and “I Fall in Love Too Easily.” Also Read: Oscars Set New.

Batman V Superman, Scott Pilgrim, Hardcore Henry and more show the growing influence of videogames on film....
This article contains very mild spoilers for Hardcore Henry, Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice and 10 Cloverfield Lane.
For a while now, 'it's like watching somebody else play a video game' has been a nifty shorthand for film critics. Even though the popularity of playthrough videos, from YouTube to dedicated networks like Twitch, means that a lot of us might now be watching other people play the video games, we understand the implication whether we agree with it or not.
It's the same reason why there has arguably never been a great movie based directly on a video game, as these tend to transplant story and character elements into a big screen medium at the expense of the personal player experience, whereby you can actually inhabit and control a character.

New year, new Lane 8, apparently. While the German DJ/producer’s 2015 releases might have suggested that he’d firmly resigned himself to department store house, his Midnight Ep – which marks his first release through Spanish record label Suara – showcases an unexpected creative tangent.
To be sure, the title track in the SoundCloud player above doesn’t stray far from the deep-ish sound associated with his Anjunadeep releases. Carried so dominantly by instrumental samples that you almost don’t even notice the four-four beat by the time it finally starts kicking, the song builds ever-so-slowly to a drowsy peak that, while not particularly lousy, isn’t particularly memorable either.
On the other end of the Ep’s spectrum, “Under My Skin” sees Lane 8 jump on the techno bandwagon as its filtered bass lines and dissonant synth melodies make for a markedly darker groove than anything he’s put out recently. However,...

From The Twilight Zone to Penny Dreadful, Doctor Who and more, Den Of Geek’s writers revisit the TV episodes that truly terrify them…
It’s Halloween! Icicles are glistening from window sills. Chestnuts are roasting on open fires. North Pole elves are… hang on, no. None of that nice, fluffy stuff is happening. At Halloween, demonic creatures hunt for flesh, monsters creep out of their graves, and TV does its level best to freak us all the hell out.
In the spirit of all that, we asked our writers to select and share the TV episodes, horror or otherwise, that have made them whimper with fear. Here they all are, 31 of them, because, well, at Halloween, we like things to add up to 31.
Note that this isn’t a Top 10, or a Best Of, nor is it listed in order of scariness. It’s a collection of the particular...

Dinah Washington (8/29/24-12/14/63) was one of the last great examples of female blues singers regularly working in a jazz band context. Many aficionados would say that she was surpassed in this style only by Bessie Smith. First Issue: The Dinah Washington Story, the two-cd set that proudly features the commemorative stamp issued by the U.S. Postal Service in 1993 to mark the 30th anniversary of her premature death at age 39 (from an overdose of alcohol and diet pills), offers the finest overview of Washington's artistry, ranging from her first records under her own name in 1943 to her classic material for the Verve, Mercury, EmArcy, and Wing labels from 1946 through 1961 (with at least one item from every year in that span), missing only her last two years, when she was on Roulette.
As vocalist expert Chris Albertson's liner notes observe, "Dinah was a gospel, blues, pop, and jazz singer all rolled into one,...

Competition's a wonderful thing. It's taught to us right from the cradle. Toddlers battle it out with their siblings and with rival pipsqueaks to get noticed. Sports Day provides older kids with the opportunity to hop forward in a potato sack or carry an egg in a spoon in order to win a shiny cup. All good preparation for the real world, in which we're constantly fighting for that job/promotion/raise (delete as applicable).
In the adult world, much of competition hinges on personality. If you're likeable and popular, chances are you'll stand a better chance of grabbing the prize than Mr or Mrs Grumpyboots standing forlornly in the corner. It's a harsh fact of life that the popular ones tend to be the victors – there must be some popularity gene running through these people. Which is why this must sting for those who can be classed as the Quirky Outsider.

It's been almost five years since transatlantic metallers Ephel Duath unleashed their dark experimental album Through My Dog's Eyes – a groundbreaking release which stirred multiple genres (including death, doom and black metal, progressive rock, gothic post-punk, even touches of avant-garde jazz) into a sinister and seductive brew that I found simultaneously unnerving and thrilling. After departing their label, they followed last year with the Ep On Death and Cosmos, already hinting at a more ambitious project to come. Photo by Bonnie Rae Mills On their fifth full-length album Hemmed by Light, Shaped by Darkness, founder & guitarist Davide Tiso is accompanied by a suitably eclectic lineup of artists: alt-metal icon Karyn Crisis on lead vocals, skilled jazz & metal bassist Steve Digiorgio, and veteran drummer Marco Minnemann of prog-rock unit The Aristocrats. The team is joined by acclaimed producer and metal legend Erik Rutan of Hate Eternal, who contributed additional guitar tracks and backing vocals.

The Walking Dead, Season 4, Episode 2: “Infected”
Directed by Guy Ferland
Written by Angela Kang
Airs Sundays at 9pm Et on AMC
Last week on our Walking Dead podcast, I half-heartedly joked around about how I cared more about the pig Violet than I did about Patrick dying. One week later, I find the most heart-wrenching moment coming not when the humans die, but instead when three piglets are sacrificed in order to stop the prison gates from falling down. This isn’t necessarily meant as a full out attack of the show. The ‘three little pigs’ scene is by far the highlight of the episode; as the barriers of the prison come tumbling down, so does Rick’s hope in retaining momentary peace. He and his group are losing in every which way possible to the flesh eating walkers, and if taking lives isn’t enough, now the walkers...

Co-created by the people who brought us The Bill, here's a peculiar and rather worthy hybrid of fact and fiction – a fake fly-on-the-wall police procedural, starring a former real-life detective chief superintendent (Jane Antrobus). It's certainly plodding and humdrum enough to be authentic – though does chuck in the odd Columbo-style red herring to keep us interested. Sienna Miller, 30, has officially joined the likes of Demi Moore, Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson in posing nude while pregnant, only the edgy actress' artistic take on what now seems like a celebrity rite of passage is predictably a lot more racy.
A nude portrait of Sienna Miller will be featured in British artist Jonathan Yeo's first major exhibition titled "(I've Got You) Under My Skin," which was taken when Sienna was still very much pregnant with her daughter Marlowe, who was born in July.

"This portrait of Sienna was painted a few weeks before the birth of her baby Marlowe and is part of a series of pictures of her which I plan to exhibit next year," wrote Yeo in the catalog which accompanies the show, via British Vogue. "It is a tribute to her courage and self-confidence that she agreed to sit for this. I can think...

A portrait of a heavily pregnant and naked Sienna Miller will appear in a new exhibition. The actress, who gave birth to daughter Marlowe in July, sat for the British artist Jonathan Yeo earlier in the year. The Independent reports that the piece is a highlight of Yeo's (I've Got You) Under My Skin exhibition at the Circle Culture Gallery, Berlin. Yeo said: "This portrait of Sienna was painted a few weeks before the birth of her baby Marlowe and is part of a series of pictures of her which I plan to exhibit next year. Sienna Miller joined in on Hollywood's naked and pregnant trend! But instead of stripping down and baring her baby bump for a magazine photo shoot, Tom Sturridge's fiancée had her portrait painted by Jonathan Yeo just weeks before giving birth to daughter Marlowe this summer. Yeo's portrait of the 30-year-old Case of You star is part of his forthcoming (I've Got You) Under My Skin exhibition at the Circle Culture Gallery in Berlin. "I wanted an image that epitomized the human body in its most naturally beautiful state to make the sharpest possible contrast with my other paintings in this exhibition, which document patients undergoing cosmetic surgery in a bid to help...

U2 lead singer Bono is used to performing in stadiums holding tens of thousands of people. But Sunday night the rockstar jumped onstage to harmonize with singer Jim Caruso and pianist Billy Stritch at the intimate Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle Hotel in New York City.
“Bono walked in. It was impossible not to recognize the guy -- the glasses alone gave him away!” a surprised Caruso told The Huffington Post.
“They were seated in the corner, where they rocked, bopped, swayed and snapped. He kept giving me the thumbs-up when he'd like a tune, and singing along quietly. “
Jim and Billy were performing standards from the Great American Songbook, of which Bono knew the words to every song. But before he made his exit, Bono made a beeline for the piano and started to harmonize with Billy Stritch on "I've Got You Under My Skin," which he last sang...

We're a week away from the Pretty Little Liars Halloween special, which, according to ABC Family, is going to result in the death of another of the show's major players. It might surprise newcomers that a teenage murder mystery involves so much death and dismemberment, but to those of us who are initiated, we know it's just another sunny day in Rosewood. Some of the show's most sinister shenanigans happen at the hands of a pair of black leather gloves, known affectionately to AfterEllen readers as the Risen Mitten. So, in honor of the upcoming A-train mayhem, we're taking a look back at all of those dastardly deeds.

Wow, these two. If Taylor Swift and Conor Kennedy are our new American royalty, Nickelback‘s Chad Kroeger and Avril Lavigne are the Canadian crown prince and princess respectively. They’re…they’re not actually Canadian royalty, are they? That would be too perfect. In case we didn’t already associate the musical couple with the Great White North, Chad gave an People interview today where he made sure to remind us. “We think it’s very cool that our anniversary will always be on Canada Day,” he gushed. “We can’t wait to start our life together.” It’s like if Beyonce and Jay-z got engaged on Independence Day! Then raved about it to People! Of course, the fact Avril and Chad wear their patriotism on their black, shredded t-shirt sleeves is only one example of how deeply Canadian this couple is. In case you need a few more…...

Savoy is an electronic dance music trio with surprising roots. Just a few years ago, Ben Eberdt, Gray Smith and Mike Kelly were a jam band from in Colorado, where they were students at C.U. Boulder. Now they're headlining the famed Red Rocks arena, dropping remixes from dance titans like Laidback Luke and DJ'ing at Jay-z's inaugural Made in America Festival.
"The band was always a dancey thing, and that happened for a few years," Eberdt explains in an interview with HuffPost Entertainment. "We just decided we needed a bigger sound to round it out and hit those sub-bass sounds that a regular acoustic kick drum couldn't really make."
So the boys added a synth pad and jumped down the Ableton wormhole at a time when many producers still weren't performing with the software. "I was the only soul except for our friend Derek [Vincent Smith] from Pretty Lights who used Ableton,...

Before he lip-synched to children’s songs on Saturday Night, before he played Latka on Taxi, before he wrestled ladies on Merv Griffin, Andy Kaufman hitchhiked cross-country from the East Coast to Las Vegas to meet his idol, Elvis Presley. Too broke to buy Elvis tickets, he hid out in a broom closet for a couple days and waylaid the King backstage. Later, while Kaufman was knocking around the Strip, he saw someone else perform: a lounge singer who was crass, drunk, and washed up. That has-been became the inspiration for Kaufman’s ego-maniacal character Tony Clifton, a bitter, libidinous Mr.

Basketball Wives: 13 Things That Got Under My Skin
No other show that I cover for TVOvermind has put my psychology minor to use like Basketball Wives. This bunch of crackpots has abnormality and psychosis seeping from their pores, so having to write about them on a weekly basis can leave me at a loss in more than one way. A loss of faith in society, a loss of vocabulary able to describe their behavior, a loss of brain cells subjecting myself to awful behavior - I love trashy reality TV as much as the next person, but damn.
Instead of trying to make heads or tails out of this group of people once again, I decided to make a list of 13 things that got under my skin about tonight's episode. You know they're awful, I know they're awful - how about a little shorthand talking about how awful they are?...

Enjoy yourself. This is the very last thing we hear on House.
Ultimately, Hugh Laurie was right when he gave an interview at the House wrap party. He was asked about one word to describe the finale and after pondering it for a moment, he suggested that, even with a title like "Everybody Dies," the episode was actually "uplifting". I almost don't recognize this feeling I have right now because it's been a rarity. Satisfaction. I feel satisfaction at this ending.
Now, that's not to say that this finale was not without its flaws. But in terms of some of the specific character journeys, I'm left feeling like I can move on from this show without hesitation. The episode opens with House lying on the ground next to his dead patient. I still am unclear about how House and this patient arrived at this point, but what difference does it make?...

Episode 208 “I’ve Got You Under My Skin”
After last week’s surprise ending where Aidan (Sam Witwer) blasted a hole in Connor’s (Jon Cor) heart, we expected him to lay low and deal with the aftermath, but he managed to top that feat this week. Also Josh (Sam Huntington) gets an intervention and Sally (Meaghan Rath) considers her current status of unemployment in what was another fine week of Being Human.
Sally
Last week’s haunting of Sally was a tease because we actually thought Danny (Gianpaolo Venuta) was back this season but thankfully (?) he was shredded by the Grim Reaper (Dusan Dukic), but what was unsettling heading into “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” was knowing that Sally’s time was coming. The Reaper had to fill his quota, and maintain the balance in the afterlife. What would be her way out? Become the grim reaper...

With The Muppets out in UK cinemas on Friday, Terence looks back over the history of Jim Henson's much-loved creations and their subversive comedy...
The Muppets, depending on where you live, are about to return or have returned to the big screen, with that wonderful new blockbuster paradigm of a movie that is both a reboot and sequel (or prequel) at the same time.
Simply titled The Muppets, the movie stars and is co-written by Judd Apatow regular, Jason Segel. The original songs are written by one half of Flight Of The Conchords, Brett McKenzie. The traditional Muppet movie roster of celebrity cameos includes the likes of Sarah Silverman, Zach Galifianakis and Neil Patrick Harris.
So: are the Muppets getting a little edgier this time around? If you look at the history of the Muppets, not really.

There have been plenty of creepy songs over the last thousand or so years. (Mozart‘s Requiem anybody? Well everybody, eventually.) We’ve decided to compile The 88 Creepiest Song Titles Of All Time. To be fair, we left out pretty much every death metal title because, frankly, they’re all pretty creepy. Click on the names of each artist to hear the selection. And feel free to weigh in on any song titles we may have left out in the comments. 88. “My Ding-a-Ling” Chuck Berry A no-brainer. It’s a song about a little boy discovering his penis, and it’s sung by a man well into his 40s. Perverted Justice’s favorite tune. 87. “Two Lovely Black Eyes” Charles Coborn What’s lovelier than a woman who was beaten in the face twice? According to Charles Coborn, nothing! 86. “With Her Head Tucked Underneath Her Arm” Stanley Holloway A song about Anne Boleyn,...
