Between his guerrilla-style filmmaking, ironic sense of humor and explosive rhetoric, Michael Moore has come to be either a folk hero or a political pariah depending on where you sit. And yet hailing from Flint, Mich. has made him uniquely positioned to address a wide swath of America’s woes. You may not agree with any of his politics, but damn if Moore’s movies aren’t entertaining, and no one does agitprop better. This ranking of his theatrical, feature documentaries, including his latest “Fahrenheit 11/9,” will be polarizing, but then his movies are supposed to be.
10. “Slacker Uprising” (2007)
Merely a collection of footage from Michael Moore’s stadium tour ahead of the 2004 Kerry-Bush election, “Slacker Uprising” lacks much of a focus or even a strong thesis. But far worse is how Moore positions himself as a rock star, editing in endless applause breaks of his fans or even multiple...

Blip is dead. Long live Blip. The online video platform, which for more than a decade was a showcase of high-quality original content, has been shut down by its owner, Maker Studios.
Blip launched in 2005, just three months after YouTube opened its doors. From the start, it feature a creator-focused approach, and it managed to attract thousands of video producers and hundreds of millions of views. Its best-known users included The Nostalgia Critic, who used it to host videos from his Channel Awesome network, and Michael Moore, who partnered with the platform to distribute his film Slacker Uprising. Blip pushed its creator-friendly model even further with the launch of Blip Studios in 2012.
At the same time, Blip struggled to turn a profit in a competitive industry, and it was ultimately acquired by Maker Studios in 2013. While Maker has made use of Blip’s technology and partnerships, it marked the actual...

Roger & Me
Directed by: Roger Moore
Running Time: 1 hr 31 mins
Rating: R
Due Out: October 7, 2014
Who’S It For? Well, let me tell you a story. I was home sick in middle school. My dad recorded some movies after a free HBO weekend. “Roger & Me” was rated R, and I thought I was about to get away with something. I was wrong. What I’m saying is, it’s not for middle schoolers. It’s for everyone who has ever considered liking documentary films. It’s that simple.
This is the chance to see Moore before he became the Moore you have a definitive love Or hate relationship with.
Before we get to the film, if you subscribe to Moore’s e-newsletter, this is old hate, if not, here’s a message from Michael Moore about his film.

Michael Moore has created some of the most talked about documentaries of all time. It’s been 25 years since his ground-breaking film Roger & Me, so it’s time for it to get the Blu-ray treatment. Here is a portion of the news release…
Roger & Me, the highly acclaimed and groundbreaking hit film that launched Michael Moore’s career as a documentary filmmaker and a leading nationwide activist, debuts in a new 25th Anniversary Blu-ray™ edition, DVD and Digital HD on October 7 from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.
Roger & Me is a highly original, personal and satire account of one of America’s greatest urban disasters told against the background of the tough times in Flint, Michigan, Moore’s hometown. The birthplace of General Motors, Flint had been economically decimated by, among other things, plant closings and the elimination of 30,000 Gm jobs. In Roger & Me, Moore gives cinematic voice to his razor-sharp,...

To celebrate the release of Capitalism: A Love Story, we offer a handy user's guide to becoming Hollywood's next scourge of the unfettered free market
Michael Moore is the Columbo of investigative journalism. He turns up - just a normal guy from Flint, Michigan, in a trucker's cap and baggy jeans - asks a few casual questions, then, Bang, he's got you. Banker, senator, CEO, movie star, cop, judge, juror … You're an enemy of the people now. Here are a few lessons that Citizen Moore's learned on his journey from being a mildly provocative but principled political writer to the cinematic scourge of bigwigs and fat cats everywhere …
You don't have to do the thing you set out to do
Moore's 1989 film Roger & Me tries in vain to interview Roger Smith, then CEO of General Motors, whose ruthless downsizing policy ruined Moore's backwater home town. Eight years later, Canadian film-makers...

About two weeks ago I had the chance to cover the red carpet for a screening of Michael Moore’s new film Capitalism: A Love Story. Thankfully, Mr. Moore was willing to give everyone there an interview. While this interview is rather brief, it was still quite an honor to talk to one of the most relevant and entertaining filmmakers working today.
Canadian Beacon is one of my favorite comedies and I was wondering if you’d consider going back to feature films? Michael Moore: Oh yes, I probably will. In fact my next film may be a feature film. Can you talk a little bit about it? Micahel Moore: No, I’m working on it right now so I can’t talk about it. Thanks for your time and great job on Bill Maher the other night. Michael Moore: (laughs) Thanks, I went all HBO on them at the end there.

A documentary cannot withstand the corrosion of time based on compelling subject matter alone. I learned this a few years ago while writing copy for an indie distribution label, whose acquisitions team had a rash tendency to pick up decades-old docs simply because they were Academy Award nominees. Sometimes they were still engaging under all that dust, but more often than not there were traits that dated them worse than the fashions worn within: static talking-head interviews shot practically but uninspiringly against bland or ugly backdrops, a schoolmarm's discipline for the purist limitations of vérité and an exhausting dryness that underscores how little use films are as strict conveyers of data -- of course, Wikipedia wasn't yet invented, so maybe information was enough back then?

Look at two recent movies that have been made available for free online as new releases: Crawford, a documentary on the adopted town of President George W. Bush and Slacker Uprising, the latest dramatized documentary from Michael Moore. Notice anything in particular in terms of connective tissue? Yeah, it's politics. The best time to get people to try something new is when a topic that's of widespread interest is hot on everyone's mind. So politically-themed movies are a great way to try out this "free online at time of release" experiment. Basically what's going on here is that filmmakers realize everyone's got politics on the brain right now. But they had movies that weren't going to cut through the clutter of the box-office distribution bottleneck. So the movies have been put out there for free. What does the filmmaker get for this? For the answer you have to look at...

Any Michael Moore fans living outside the U.S. or Canada were frustrated when they went through official routes to download Slacker Uprising, Moore's latest film that he made intentionally available for free download online. But it didn't take long for the movie to show up in less legal venues, like Bit Torrent, and that was when the lawyers less thrilled with Moore's copyright plan got involved. Moore talked to Torrent Freak and admitted that he pretty much planned for the movie to be available all over the Internet, for viewers all over the world, even though the movie's copyright holder has sent lawyers marching all over to cease and desist downloading. "I only own the Us and Canadian rights. So my hands are tied. But this is the 21st century. What are .geographical rights'?" He repeatedly told Torrent Freak that he wishes someone would figure out what he's up...

Psycho, Rear Window and Vertigo If you haven't yet checked out my Movie Magic article from Monday it was inspired by the audio commentary from Psycho and I have yet to check out the special features for either Rear Window or Vertigo, but I did get a chance to watch Vertigo just last night. While Psycho is great and Rear Window may be my favorite Hitchcock film I have no idea what people see in Vertigo. That film is long and for the most part downright boring. I don't think the con pulled on Scottie is all that intriguing and the hokey dialogue is just too much to bear. The AFI recently named Vertigo the ninth best American movie ever made, with Psycho at 14 and Rear Window at 48. Maybe I am in the minority, but Vertigo...

If you happen to already be of the opinion that Michael Moore is not the lovable man of the people he appears to be, then this news probably won't be changing your feelings about him anytime soon. One month after Moore offered up free downloads of his latest documentary, Slacker Uprising, Torrent Freak reports that "In a letter dated September 25th, lawyers representing Westside Productions LLC, owner of the Slacker Uprising copyright sprang into action, demanding the removal of a torrent linking to the movie from any and all international sites."
Moore's latest was compiled of footage from his recent college tour -- a tour in which he traveled to colleges in the so-called 'swing states' to speak to students in an attempt to energize young voters. The film is a re-edited version of Moore's 2007 doc, Captain Mike Across America, which screened at Tiff in '07 to lukewarm reviews. Moore...

When filmmaker Michael Moore announced that his new movie Slacker Uprising would be released exclusively online, he not only refused to charge for it, but encouraged his fans to feel free to pirate it. In fact, he told them to "email it, burn it, and share it with anyone and everyone." Unfortunately, those were just words. Words he said and didn't mean. Apparently he's only ok with people sharing it, as long as they only share it with Americans or Canadians. A lot people missed that, and it's understandable. The content of his message makes it sound like he's generously setting it free to the entire world. But in parentheses after telling everyone in his press release to share his movie he says, "(in the U.S. and Canada only)". And he meant it. According to TorrentFreak, Westside Productions LLC, copyright holder on Slacker Uprising, is sending out lawyers armed...

Regardless of how you feel about him and his movies, it's difficult to argue that documentary filmmaker Michael Moore gets a reaction. He's hoping you react by watching his latest production Slacker Uprising... for free, on your computer or applicable device. The movie's timely subject matter revolves around voting -- Moore traveled the country in 2004 trying to incite America's youth to vote (in a dashed attempt to get Bush out of office), and the film shows the results of his efforts. A year before professional rabble-rouser Michael Moore released Slacker Uprising—available free on slackeruprising.com, and for $10 on a DVD with extra features—it premièred at the Toronto Film Festival under the title Captain Mike Across America. To use the parlance of our times, the name change is a classic example of putting lipstick on a pig. It isn't just that Slacker Uprising is Moore's worst film in a walk, it's that it's really all about "Captain Mike," messianic man of the people, standing at the forefront of a youth-driven revolution. Shot in the few months leading up to the 2004 presidential election, when Moore embarked on a 62-city tour to drum up enthusiasm in arenas and on college campuses, the film is now being used to rally the same troops for November 4. But whatever its intent, this interminable 96-minute highlight reel plays like Moore's homage to himself. Based simply on.

With the 2008 U.S. presidential election coming up soon, Michael Moore has decided to let people download his latest film, “Slacker Uprising,” completely for free.
"This is being done entirely as a gift to my fans. The only return any of us are hoping for is the largest turnout of young voters ever at the polls in November," Moore wrote on the film’s official site at slackeruprising.com.
Here’s the official synopsis by Moore:
“Slacker Uprising” takes place in the wake of "Fahrenheit 9/11," during the run-up to the 2004 election, as I traveled for 42 days across America, visiting 62 cities in a failed attempt to remove George W. Bush from office.
My goal was to help turn out a record number of young voters and others who had never voted before. What I encountered during the tour and the filming was both inspiring and frightening, so I thought, hey, this...

You can say whatever you like about Michael Moore, but you have to acknowledge that he does a fantastic job keeping his name in the papers. The controversial filmmaker used his Bowling for Columbine Oscar speech in 2003 to promote an agenda, which tied neatly into his very next film, the record-shattering Fahrenheit 9/11.
Just as timely, and an even better film, was his plea for health care reform, SiCKO. And now, on the eve of one of the most important elections in the last 50 years, Moore is back with a new film called Slacker Uprising.
Once again, Moore has hit on a story that's already in the headlines: How do you get young people involved in the political process? Moore has answered that by going directly to the new wave of voters. Slacker Uprising covers Moore's 60-city tour, which included scads of college campuses. Michael Moore's new doc Slacker Uprising makes its release online today. You can purchase it on DVD (http://slackeruprising.com/buy.php) for less than $10, but you may also download the film for free right here (http://slackeruprising.com/#signup), as long as you live in US or Canada. All you have to do is sign up to his mailing list, which I think sounds more costly than throwing down $9.95, but, y'know... The film documents Michael Moore going on tour to colleges in swing states, encouraging Americans 18-29 to vote during the 2004 election (for Kerry, of course). The target was college slackers, hence the title. To encourage the slackers to show up, they were offered a clean change of underwear, Ramen noodles, and a promise that no event would start before noon and no politician would be allowed to speak.

Slacker Uprising follows Michael Moore on a 2004, a 62-city tour through the undecided states to register and rally young would-be voters to vote for a change in our country. George Bush got re-elected anyway, but at least Moore got a movie out of it. Watch the movie streaming here or here. To download it in high-res, try their already overloaded servers right here. The more popular titles were The Brave One - Jodie Foster who finds her mean streak in a revenge flick from Neil Jordon, Michael Clayton - the George Clooney pic with the great poster one sheet, there was a heavy crowd for one of my Cannes favorites in Control (the rise and fall of the lead singer of Joy Division, there was the opening film of the fest in Jeremy Podeswa's Fugitive Pieces and while I saw Michael Moore (he walks funny) I didn't see his documentary about wrestling with pro-Bush college seniors in Captain Mike Across America.

Fahrenheit 9/11 filmmaker Michael Moore may be cooking up another political documentary. The Oscar-winning helmer, whose screening excerpts from his upcoming indictment on the U.S. healthcare system Sicko at this year's Toronto Film Festival, is reportedly working on an additional project titled The Great '04 Slacker Uprising. The film was shot while Moore was on the road during a college campus tour in the time leading up to the 2004 presidential election. Segments of the work-in-progress pic are also expected to screen at the festival. Sicko is due for release next year.
