One of the best sitcom episodes of all time
LCShackley15 April 2012
Besides being the best IT CROWD episode of the series, I think that "The Work Outing" stands alongside some of the best sitcom half-hours of TV history.

The first series had established the groundwork of the three main characters, but had confined them to their workspace. But writer/director Graham Linehan opens up this season two premiere by "opening up" the physical space and taking his team to a theatre for the performance of "Gay: The Musical." The bits of the musical that we're allowed to see contain the wackiest songs since "Elephant!" (from "The Tall Guy") or "Springtime for Hitler" (from "The Producers"), but what's even funnier are the situations that Jen, Moss and Roy get involved in while on their "outing." The comic timing of this episode, and the clever way that Linehan builds the pay-offs to his gags, are priceless.

You might also want to pause your DVD on the theatre poster, where you'll see the names of many of the crew listed as part of the cast.

It's a bit more like "Seinfeld" than "The IT Crowd," but it's consistent with what we already know about the characters. I've watched this episode several times and never tire of it.

"Every assumption I've ever had is being challenged, and I'm loving it."

An absolutely hysterical episode. Jen has found yet another prospective boyfriend, and he asks her to go to the theater with him. When Moss and Roy invite themselves along, both manage to get into trouble, and hilarity ensues! It's true that this episode doesn't incorporate as many geek jokes as usual or take place in the typical work setting. Instead, the episode follows a far more daring path: it puts established characters into a new situation. This time, the humor revolves around the personalities of Moss, Roy, and Jen, not just references to geek culture. But don't worry, the episode still has plenty of The IT Crowd's trademark hilarious one-liners. Don't miss it!

Pure Gold
ObeseManWatching25 December 2012
This is simply the best episode of the funniest programme on TV for decades. One of the things that British comedy does best is the "awkward situation" and this episode takes it to a new level only touched upon by programmes such as Fawlty Towers, Only Fools and Horses and The Office in the past. The comic-timing from all of the main characters but especially Moss is something that should be preserved in aspic for future generations of comedians to study.

The criticism from one of the other reviewers on here seems to mix-up bad-taste and homophobic humour with humour directed at those people who perpetuate such views. The jokes are not anti-gay but anti-bigot or anti-awkwardness.

I am not going to say anything about the "situation" of this comedy but just to say, if you want 20 odd minutes of literally tears-running-down- the-cheek joy then watch this.

One of the best episodes I have ever seen!
p-nash-17-20190515 November 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This is not only the funniest episode of 'The IT crowd', It is also one of the Funniest comedy episodes of all time! This episode focuses on Jen getting asked to the theatre by a co-worker she has a crush on but Moss and Roy are almost certain he is gay. Jen is sceptical but she becomes more and more suspicious when she, Moss and Roy find out that the play they were invited to was a celebration of being gay. When Moss and Roy try to escape during the intermission but end up in some odd situations such as Roy having to use the disabled toilet but he mistakes the emergency alarm for the flush and has to pretend to be disabled to avoid getting in trouble. Moss had to pretend to be a bar tender when he is caught using the staff toilet. Later that night Jen is shocked to find the two and their fake live's. This episode is one hilarious scene after another and I couldn't get enough of the comedy style. The character have improved and are at their very best! Overall the best episode of the shows 5 season run. Highly recommended!

Hilarious, side splitting. Amazing episode.
Sleepin_Dragon20 November 2015
The Office has had a makeover, Jen introduces Philip to the boys, he invites Jen to the Theatre, the boys invite themselves along. Roy and Moss think Philip's gay man, they arrive at the Theatre and find the play is called 'Gay.' Roy decides it's not for him, and ends up in an Ambulance, Moss ends up as a member of staff.

This rates as one of the best episodes of the IT crowd, it's hilarious, absolutely laugh out loud funny. From start to finish it's just amazing.

Morris's banter with the actor is hysterically funny. Some of the one liners are brilliant, 'I just paid a pound not to go to the toilet.'

It's always been a funny show, but this episode is top notch. 10/10

Excellence

I enjoy Linehan's humour - Father Ted, The Fast Show, Black Books, even Hippies - and I've watched the "If you type google into google" clip lots of times. But this show passed me by.

The second half of this episode is the best ten minutes of sitcom. Ever. Not even Seinfeld, including Do The Opposite. I was wiping away tears, but no recovery time before the next laugh, and so on until the credits rolled.

Brilliant example of laying pipe - what they set up early on made the later execution simple and rhythmic. Add in the weird-is-normal humour and you get exponential laughter.

The Reviewer Above is Completely Wrong
nakielr17 March 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Yes, do not listen to this person above for a single minute. This was the funniest episode of the 12 episodes of "The I.T. Crowd". I was roaring because it's built around the simple premise that Roy and Moss can't...well, watch and see. It's brilliant. Even small comments at the beginning, like Roy being Irish, pay off big time in the end. Huge laughs. Gigantic. Seek out this episode. Now if the Reviewer was complaining about the development in the second episode that caused a new, very annoying, and not particularly funny character to be introduced, I would whole-heartedly agree but this first episode of the second series was gold.

A perfect episode.
mpyusko3 April 2019
This could possibly be the quintessential example of Sit-com perfection. The jokes, while predictable at times, lose nothing as the rythm, delivery and timing are perfect. The facial expressions at to the humor and relatability. I've watched this episode dozens of times and I still can't stop laughing from beginning to end.

The funniest episode I have ever seen
sauravss171013 May 2012
Whoa, I just had to write this review, I am in the middle of this episode as I'm writing because I just couldn't continue watching this episode and breathe at the same time.

I'd just recently started watching this series and to say that I was impressed would be putting i mildly. I have seen the complete first season but not one episode of the six is as funny as the "After party" scene. This whole episode is a laughter riot but the scene that I mentioned is the peak. Honestly, I think that the whole comedy genre might have jumped the shark.

Any comedy fans out there I beg you to see this episode as I'm sure it won't let you down and as for the people who have just started watching IT crowd and are yet to see this episode... I envy you.

Now that I've regained my composure and I'm going back to watch this episode.

Funniest episode of the funniest ever sitcom
jmu2-208-9447779 January 2015
I don't know anyone who didn't like 'the IT crowd; it strikes a chord with anybody who ever worked in an office situation and who had to deal with the geeks who seemed to be in control of some kind of sorcery in the computer department. This is the funniest of all the funny IT Crowd episodes; it will have tears running down your face. The episode centres on the work colleagues having a night out at the theatre, where a series of comic mix-ups get them into very funny situations indeed. The very last scene has Chris O'Dowd at his deadpan most hilarious. I loved the IT crowd, but this episode stands out as one of the funniest pieces of TV ever. This episode is up there with Fawlty Towers 'don't mention the war' and the 'Fools and Horses' chandelier scene. Achingly funny and a real classic!

Best episode of comedy tv
jordansavage-5339527 April 2020
The show is fantastic already but this episode alone is arguably one of the funniest pieces of comedy ever. It has countless bits that are setup and just fall like domino pieces one after the other. You're consistently laughing out loud for the entirety of the episode. And the rewatch value is brilliant. The anticipation of the bits now makes them even funnier

This episode is the best of the entire show! I absolutely died when Jen turned around to see moss working at the bar. I loved watching them interact and nobody outed each other to make it dramatic. Just laughs! Well... I guess ONE person got outed.

Comedy gold.
pjdickinson-2782212 July 2021
It truly is incredible that a show can, in 24 minutes, scale the heights of absurdity and deliver so much hilarity. Even after multiple viewings I just can't stop laughing at our three heroes' predicaments. This is expertly done, very silly and absolutely magnificent comedy. Even comedies with over a hundred episodes don't come close to having an episode half as hilarious as this.

This is simply one of the best scripted episodes I have ever seen. The writing is superb and the acting is hilarious. I don't think I have ever laughed out loud more to a TV episode. The people who made this episode should be proud of themselves.
