When King Higlack (Harry Anichkin) of the Geats (Sweden) hears about the monster Grendel terrorizing Heorot, the realm of King Hrothgar (Ben Cross) of the Danes, he sends his hero slayer Beowulf (Chris Bruno) along with young prince Finn (Charles Hittinger) and a band of soldiers to slay the seemingly undefeatable monster.
Grendel is a character in the Old English epic poem Beowulf, written anonymously and dated somewhere around 1000 AD, possibly earlier. The movie is very loosely based on the poem. The screenplay was written by Ron Fernandez and Berkeley Anderson.
As Ingrid (Alexis Kendra) watches helplessly, The Hag (Grendel's mother) carries off Finn. When Beowulf vows to kill her, King Hrothgar tells him about an ancient sword, said to be the only sword that can kill the Hag. Beowulf goes alone to her cave where he finds the sword. He uses the crossbow to drive off the Hag long enough for him to find Finn lying wounded on the rocks. As he helps Finn down, the Hag returns and renews her attack on Beowulf. Finn picks up the crossbow and fires it directly into the The Hag's back, but she continues to rise. Finn passes out, but Beowulf picks up the fabled sword and beheads the creature. Beowulf returns to Heorot, carrying Finn over his shoulder. When Ingrid sees that Finn is still alive, she rushes into his arms. Beowulf presents King Hrothgar with The Hag's head and is thanked by Hrothgar. In the final scene, it is shown that Finn and Ingrid marry and bear a son, while Beowulf and his soldiers return to the sea.
Beowulf has long ago passed into public domain and can be found in several places on the Internet.
