Larry Hagman: J.R. Ewing

Quotes

  • [JR sees Farlow with his wife at the drunk tank]

    J.R. Ewing : FARLOW!

    [JR attacks Dusty]

J.R. Ewing : What the hell are you doing here? You let go my wife, you HEAR!

Dusty Farlow : Settle down, JR. I'm WARNING you!

J.R. Ewing : You bastard! I ought to tear your head off right now!

  • [Back at Southfork Ranch in the evening. The car just drove to the entrance. Miss Ellie is standing there looking at the fireplace for awhile, and get a cup of tea to drink, and sat down in the chair. But J.R. is back home]

Miss Ellie Ewing Farlow : J.R.?

J.R. Ewing : Mama. Are you all right?

Miss Ellie Ewing Farlow : We found Sue Ellen.

J.R. Ewing : Oh, well. Lucky us. Is she upstairs? Has she made a fool of herself?

Miss Ellie Ewing Farlow : Listen to me.

[J.R. turn back to his mother]

Miss Ellie Ewing Farlow : She's in the detox ward at the county hospital. The police found her passed out in the alleyway and threw her in the drunk tank. When I couldn't reach you, Clayton and I went there to get her. By the time we got there, she'd gone into convulsions. The D.T.'s, they call it. She was taken to the detox ward. She's there now, barely alive.

    [J.R. sighs]

J.R. Ewing : We are we gonna do?

Miss Ellie Ewing Farlow : You, J.R., what are you going do?

    J.R. Ewing : I don't know.

Miss Ellie Ewing Farlow : Well, I do. You're going to face this problem once and for all. I won't let you run away from it or pass it on to me or Clayton or Dusty or the police. Sue Ellen is your wife. And as long as she is, she's your responsibility. I don't care what shape your marriage is in. She's a woman that we have loved and a woman that has loved us. She's the mother of your son who still needs her. She's a member of this family, J.R. She is a Ewing. And your personal feelings don't change any of that or at anyway excuse you from helping her.

J.R. Ewing : She won't listen to me, mama. She doesn't want my help.

Miss Ellie Ewing Farlow : She doesn't want anybody's help. She's sick.

    [J.R. regretted]

Miss Ellie Ewing Farlow : And she'll kill herself if you let her. Which is exactly why you have to make the decision for her.

    J.R. Ewing : What decision?

Miss Ellie Ewing Farlow : You've ask me for my support before. Now you've got it. You have to commit Sue Ellen to a sanitarium where we can at least begin to help her.

J.R. Ewing : She'd never agree to that.

Miss Ellie Ewing Farlow : She has no choice. And neither do you. I'll back you up, J.R., but you've got to lead the way. Tomorrow.

[J.R. will forget tomorrow and he'll remembered. J.R. will take break and sit in a chair next to the fireplace]

    J.R. Ewing : Tomorrow.

  • Pamela Barnes Ewing : [she found J.R. playing with Christopher]  I wondered how long it would take you to get here.

J.R. Ewing : [sighs]  Now, Pam, this isn't any easier for me as it is for you.

Pamela Barnes Ewing : [sharply]  Next time leave Christopher out of it!

J.R. Ewing : Well, I'm here because of Christopher.

Pamela Barnes Ewing : You mean his thirty percent of Ewing Oil.

J.R. Ewing : Pam, uh, I know that Bobby meant well when he made you administrator, but, uh,

    [pours himself some water]

J.R. Ewing : frankly, I think that charge is a little more romantic than it was smart.

Pamela Barnes Ewing : Is that so?

    J.R. Ewing : Yes, indeed.

    [drinks]

    J.R. Ewing : You see,

    [sits down]

J.R. Ewing : sooner or later you're gonna have to make decisions that... that Bobby used to make. And I don't think he really wanted you to have to do this.

Pamela Barnes Ewing : Well, what do you think he wanted?

J.R. Ewing : I think he wanted you to benefit from his thirty percent. Not have it be a burden to you. Pam, you've got enough to worry about without adding the business of Ewing Oil.

Pamela Barnes Ewing : [laughs]  Then what are you suggesting? That you do it?

J.R. Ewing : Better than that. I wanna buy back his shares in Ewing Oil. It'd be the best thing we could do. Christopher would have all the money he'd ever need, you'd never have to worry about Ewing Oil again.

Pamela Barnes Ewing : Bobby wanted me to protect the estate, not sell it.

J.R. Ewing : [leans forward]  Well, you can do both. You sell his interests in the company, and invest that money anywhere you want to.

Pamela Barnes Ewing : That would make me feel like I was abandoning something. Abandoning Bobby.

J.R. Ewing : The only thing you'd be abandoning is misery. You and Christopher can get on with your lives. Put the source of all this pain behind you. Pam, I know you always hated Ewing Oil. Hated it for what it did to Bobby and your family. Why carry that on into another generation? Why put that on Christopher?

    [sighs]

J.R. Ewing : Look, I know how you feel. Things are pretty confusing right about now. I don't want an answer overnight, but I want you to give this some serious thought as I have. Pam... I'll make you the best offer possible.

  • [J.R. drinking. Franklin reads the manual]

Franklin Horner : I don't know what you're looking so worried about. You know as well as I do, your figures and your projections are as solid as steel.

J.R. Ewing : Then your bank won't have any trouble arranging this loan?

Franklin Horner : Well, the Cattleman's Bank can't swing it all alone but we'll pull in the right partners without any trouble. You just leave it to us.

J.R. Ewing : Well, all we have to do now is get that Barnes woman off the dime.

Franklin Horner : A delicate situation, huh?

J.R. Ewing : Hmm. She's attaching a sense of loyalty to this thing. Sell, I guess I am too.

Franklin Horner : I can't imagine anyone turning down an offer the size of the one you're making. Along with all her other assets, she'll be one of the wealthiest people in the state. In the country, for that matter.

J.R. Ewing : Well, can you imagine her getting this far? There's just no accounting for some things. You sure you're not gonna have that drink?

Franklin Horner : I'm afraid my drinking days are over. Thanks, anyway, J.R.

J.R. Ewing : Trying to tell me you're getting old?

Franklin Horner : I'm trying to tell you I wanna get old. Give my best to Miss Ellie and the family, will you, J.R.?

    J.R. Ewing : I will. Goodnight.

    Franklin Horner : Goodnight.

[Franklin leaves the door and bids goodnight. J.R. looks are the picture of Sue Ellen]

  • Braddock County Sheriff Baldwin : Well, the emergency rooms have been checked. And from this point on, all accident reports are being channeled through our office.

Clayton Farlow : Well, she just didn't disappear off the face of the earth.

Braddock County Sheriff Baldwin : This photograph of her will help.

Jenna Wade : Where would she go?

Braddock County Sheriff Baldwin : Judging from what you told me wherever she can get a drink. She could be anywhere in this city sipping her blues away.

Miss Ellie Ewing Farlow : Sue Ellen's had lost weekends before and she's always come home. But this time, I'm afraid it's different.

Jenna Wade : It all sounds so awful. Isn't there anything we can do?

Braddock County Sheriff Baldwin : Short of forming a posse, no.

Clayton Farlow : Sheriff's got a lot of ground to cover. It'll take time.

Braddock County Sheriff Baldwin : And time's the one thing an alcoholic runs out of fast. If we don't find her, you folks are gonna have to reconsider going public with this thing. Make a statement to the press or trying to reach her through the media. I know how sensitive J.R. Is about the publicity but it may be the thing that saves her life.

Miss Ellie Ewing Farlow : We understand that. And I'm sure J.R. does too.

Braddock County Sheriff Baldwin : He must be terribly upset by this. Tell him we're doing everything we possibly can, will you?

Miss Ellie Ewing Farlow : Yes, of course.

    [Phone rings]

Braddock County Sheriff Baldwin : Miss Ellie, we were all real sorry to hear about Bobby. He was a fine man.

Miss Ellie Ewing Farlow : Thank you, Sheriff. You'll call us?

Braddock County Sheriff Baldwin : I'll be in touch.

[Sheriff Baldwin will leave now and call them. But Raoul got a telephone call]

Raoul : Miss Ellie? J.R. is on the phone.

Miss Ellie Ewing Farlow : Thank you, Raoul.

[Miss Ellie answers the phone is J.R]

Miss Ellie Ewing Farlow : J.R.?

J.R. Ewing : Mama, I-I checked with the sheriff earlier. He said he's gonna need a picture of Sue Ellen.

Miss Ellie Ewing Farlow : Yes. They were just here.

J.R. Ewing : [On the phone]  Oh, nothing new?

Miss Ellie Ewing Farlow : No. I'm afraid not. But they'll find her, J.R.

J.R. Ewing : I know. I know. If anything happens...

Miss Ellie Ewing Farlow : I'll call you right away.

J.R. Ewing : [On the phone]  Yeah, you do that.

Miss Ellie Ewing Farlow : Bye, J.R.

    J.R. Ewing : Goodbye.

    [Hangs up the phone]

    J.R. Ewing : Damn, where's that woman?
