How has this man found an audience for this swill? I was subjected to two—two!--of these hideous videos as a member of a captive audience (some boor decided to foist his idea of entertainment on everyone who purchased a ticket on a long-distance bus tour). Black man in drag plays loud, intimidating, violent virago—it wasn't funny in 1906, and it isn't funny in 2006. I am baffled and angry that Tyler Perry has resurrected this ugly staple of an unmourned past. There was no plot. (All pretense of a plot simply ceases somewhere in the unending second hour, when unforgivable versions of 1970's soul classics are attempted.) The writing was worthy of a seventh-grader. The platitudes were non-stop. And the cues for the sad attempts at original "songs" were so obvious that I almost wept, because I knew that another assault on my ears was coming. Perry knows his target audience: there was whooping and cheering of violence, particularly the violent punishment of children. There was gyrating in orgiastic delirium at the mere mention of "de Lawd." And where did Perry get the idea that if you scream it loud enough, you need neither poetry, beauty, harmony, nor symmetry? We don't need violent Aunt Jemimas in 2006, and, if you value your history, your intellect, and your hearing, you don't need "Madea."

Funny and Clean!
cksamera14 August 2006
Funny and clean comedy, something my family and I can watch without fast forwarding. Enhances family values and a structured family environment. I am definitely a Tyler Perry fan! I find myself wanting to watch more of his movies. His drive and determination after hard times is an inspiration to us all. His plays and his movies are equally entertaining and I stress to see him live as well as buying the DVDs, you will laugh so hard that you may not hear the lines. So buy the DVDs!!Medea goes to Jail is just one of his best plays, along with Family Reunion, I do Bad all by Myself and Meet the Browns. Tyler Perry's works are something that you will find yourself watching over and over again.

Brilliant Play

I just wanted to say that Madea goes to Jail, is a very funny, thigh slapping, life changing play. It blessed my heart so much and I love the ad lib that Tyler perry did when he went out of character into his real self and then went right back into Madea. By far, this is Tyler perry's best play yet, the scratch of the surface, we have not seen anything yet, his best work his yet to come. He is such a gifted, talented actor, writer, producer, and Director, I thank God for his life because his plays and movies are life changing, there is always the underline theme in every play and movie, which is forgiveness. We should all forgive regardless of what has ever been done to us.

Ah, What a Great Play!

Warning: Spoilers
"Diary of a Mad Black Woman: The Movie" was shot, "Madea's Family Reunion: The Movie" was in production, and "Meet the Browns: The Play" was touring the country. While all of this is going on, Tyler Perry toured "Madea Goes to Jail: The Play" around the country. Much like "Meet the Browns," this play thrives on comedy. There's a dramatic story and a bit of romance, but you will be laughing more than anything else throughout this piece.

Now, I do have to admit something: like I said, there is a bit of romance in this play, and it's kind of sloppy. It's not too distracting or troublesome, it doesn't even harm the play. The problem with it is that it comes from nowhere. Sonny loves his wife, Vanessa, until he learns she's been sleeping with his friend and boss, Nate. After he files for a divorce, he gets a promotion at his job. Then he reveals to his friend and the new head prosecutor, Wanda...Yeah, where does this come from? Sure, they've been friends for a long time and there's a tiny bit of flirting at the beginning, but there's not really anything here that screams need for a romance. But, again, this doesn't hurt the play much.

I must also say that I love Madea's speech in the middle of the play. When she's talking to Sonny and the audience about life lessons such as faith, relationships, love, and other things. It really is something to take to the heart. If you don't enjoy anything else in the play, you should enjoy that.

I like everything else in this play. I love the new characters, the story, the music, and, again, the comedy is great! That is probably the main thing you'll remember when this play is over, along with Madea's words of wisdom. Watch the play, folks. You shan't be disappointed. BOOYIKA!

A funny, sometime serious and deeply Christian romantic musical comedy.

My resistance to the Tyler Perry vision is crumbling. I'm not sure exactly why. I'm. still an agnostic and some of the humor is sub-Martin Lawrence. But when more of an artist's work rings true than not true I have to sit up and pay attention. I watch all kinds of films and television and I can proudly acknowledge that Tyler Perry is up there with Marc Cherry, the creator of WEEDS and SOUL FOOD, Ryan Murphy and UGLY BETTY. Perry has a tremendous grasp of classic Greek drama and arguably Elizabethan drama, too. He speaks to his audience clearly and warmly. I can't wait for the film version of this play. Somehow, he even goofs on THE MATRIX in this work. He's deserving of major props and respect.

The #1 Madea Play Ever
miss_sugie11 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I don't think I have laughed nearly as much as I did at any of the other plays. Not to mention when Ole' dude broke out with the Frankie Beverly & Maze!! My dad tried to talk to me while the white boy was..............was taking me to another world. Matter of fact, another universe. But man it had such a great message and it was real. Not to mention, Tyler Perry had a character slip that was so funny. I would have liked it a lot better if the little girl would have sung. They get your hopes up and then kill them, raise them and then throw them out the window. But, besides that, the movie gets two thumbs up from me.

MADEA does it AGAIN..

Tyler Perry is the BEST!! And this play is his FINEST! I have seen and own all Tyler Perrys' Plays and Movies and this is my favorite. It contains Comedy,Drama,Action,Music, and Tylers' surprisingly NICE singing voice. This is a MUST SEE!! The cast is great and the only character missing is Mr. Brown. Still Madea pulls it off and does it once again. Keeps you rolling on the floor with laughter. Can't wait for the movie. If its Tyler Perry you know its going to be good. There's a life lesson in all TPs' Plays. Don't Miss the Big one here. Be Prepared to laugh, cry and everything in between. You will not be disappointed.

Wow

Warning: Spoilers
I saw this play for the first time today. I have to say I was truly surprised at the singing voices of all the characters.

The ADA. Wow. Powerful voice and the mother prisoner. Nothing like it. But what really surprised me was Tyler Perry's voice. I never knew he could sing like that. It was a great surprise.

Just a wonderful 3 hours to spend watching something I truly enjoyed.

The story is a simple one and goes on everyday in this world. We are all just going around on this planet dealing with the same problems everyone else is dealing with. Love, good or bad marriages, good and bad choices we make in life, hate and lovin. Life period. At it simpliest form.

I loved it!
alice09294817 December 2006
I agree that it did sort of drag during the last part, but all-in-all I got so many laughs from watching this. There were also many wonderful "food for thought" moments whenever Madea would spout her wisdom. The music was fantastic, and delivered by gifted singers. I loved the moves the "backup singers" did behind the sofa. I think this is perhaps the best of all the Tyler Perry films...and I am a huge fan of anything he does. He knows his audience well, and is so good at conveying important messages through his scripts. It's rare that I see a film or play that gives me so many laughs AND so many truths that make me want to stand up and shout, "YES!!!" Tyler Perry is a young genius, and I hope he produces much, much more material!
