Wow, What A Visual Stunner!
ccthemovieman-12 December 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This has to be the most stylishly and colorfully filmed CSI of all time, with spectacular aerial and ground shots of Rio as "Lt. Horatio Caine" (David Caruso) and Eric Delko (Adam Rodriguez) go track the killer of Marisol. The latter, the brand new bride of "H" and the sister of Eric, was killed by a gangster named Riaz and he winds up a free man in Rio.

Not only that but family matters make the situation worse as Horatio's brother "Ray" is killed and it looks like his son is mixed in with this criminal. Ray's dying wish to Horatio is to look after the boy so "H" has many reasons to nab this Riaz.

In a secondary story, "Calleigh" (Emily Proctor) is running CSI in Caine's absence and "Ryan" (Jonathan Togo) is not happy when she pairs him with rookie "Natalia" (Eva La Rue) especially after "Boa Vista" begins messing up her first assignment on this new CSI field agent position. Wasn't Natalia the mole at the end of last season? For that, she's promoted?! I must be missing something, but I don't think she's a good addition to the "team."

All fans of this CSI: Miami show have different characters and things we like about it. To me, the wild colors and great cinematography are a big appeal so this opening episode was a treat for my eyes with just one spectacular scene after another. I also like Caruso, which probably puts me in the minority as I don't know anyone else who does....but I think he's cool.

Season Opner
speedle_8429 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
What a premier. It was good to see them as the outsiders trying to fend for themselves. It was also good to see Horatio and Delko Exact their revenge on Riaz for ordering the slaying of Marisol. The only disappointment was the murder of Horatio's brother Ray. There just seemed to be no emotion and it would have good to have brought Ray into the show as a regular.

Although not as good as the season four premier it was still a promising start to what could be a great season for the show.

Another good thing to see was the return of Natalia Boa Vista as a CSI trying to regain the trust of the team after her betrayal at the end of last season.

The crappification of CSI
caranpaima9 April 2009
Warning: Spoilers
A guy supposedly enforcing the law in the USA then goes out of the country, kills some guy and goes back as if nothing had happened? And all of his friends, co-workers are OK with that??? How many times has Caine talked somebody out from doing justice by their own hand?? And how the hell did Delko and Caine walk into the favelas as if they were walking in the park? They shouldn't have been able to walk two steps into one of those slums without being violated, mugged and kidnapped... And finally, they go to the capo's stronghold (God knows how did they get there) and the guy decides to fight them (alone!!!!) with switchblades? The least those gangster types carry are Uzis and AKs... And where were the henchmen?

Horatio's Brain is Cooked!
rffp16 July 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I used to be a regular watcher of CSI Miami, despite the fact that I labeled as a non-serious "fake" police series. After seeing that episode, I had no doubt it is gained the "trash" status. Well, Horatio decides to go rogue and chase his nemesis Riaz (isn't that a Spanish name and not a Portuguese one?) in Rio de Janeiro.

First, although our justice department is a complete wreck, we do not import criminals to set them loose here. They have fled to Brazil on their own to escape prison on our former loose extradition laws, but we don't get them from outside our borders so they can create havoc here. In specific a blue-collar criminal that was in an American prison! And I seriously doubt the US justice department would allow that extradition.

Second, haven't they shot the episode in Rio actually? Haven't they noticed that it is an extremely hot city? Horatio Caine's brain would be cooked after 1 hour walking in the city streets under the harsh Rio sun wearing that dark colored suit. Well, that would explain his death wish when he decided to go up the hill and enter the "favela". That was laughable. A little "favela" boy that spoke perfect English? They barely speak good Portuguese! Third, Horatio look as "gringo" as one can, he would have been mugged and assaulted (not necessarily in this order) the moment he stepped out of the airport. So how he could approach the "favela" remains a big mystery! This episode marked the turning point in the series, in which the following episodes were as bad as they could be!

Horatio with a shank...
Valkonian15 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Man I love CSI Miami so much but this episode is just so bad. You must see it only for the scene with Horatio wielding a switchblade against Diaz. It's a shame the fight didn't last longer. LOL. Horatio is the man!

I give up
unitywithinme2 November 2022
I've watched all the other versions of CSI and finally a few years ago I started watching Miami. Now from the very start I've hated David Caruso and he's made it difficult for me to enjoy this version but the supporting cast is so great I've done my best to continue to make it through season by season. After this episode though I'm calling it quits. For me that red headed zero emotional ranged actor ruins any real hope for me to enjoy this show as a whole. David Caruso should have never been put into a position to be a main character. He's a straight to TV movie "actor" If that. He's awful. ✌🏻

What is with the pacing in this episode
o-stemp29 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The pacing in this episode is absolutely abysmal. From early on so many things happen and way to fast. One coincidence just leads to another. They don't take time to establish anything.

Riaz immediately gets out of prison where he and Horatio have a bit of a standoff and then Horatio does the cliche disappearing when a car drives by, but I don't think the writers fully understand that trope because a car doesn't drive through the characters line of site it drives through the viewers. So did Horatio just drop to the ground and combat roll away while Riaz was looking right at him. Riaz was probably thinking "wtf, this is the guy I've chosen to have a feud with". So After Horatio preforms his disappearing act in front of Riaz he now needs to find the man he just disappeared from. So he seeks out his brother and his family who now reside in Rio with hopes that Ray Caine might know something about Riaz. Not only does Ray coincidentally have connections to Riaz, but when Horatio finds Ray he's already been tortured and left for dead (by Riaz we can assume) just in time for Horatio to hear his dying words. This is only like the first 15 minutes of the episode. I'm just gonna leave it here for now otherwise I'm gonna be here all day writing down all the different things they learned in this episode.

This episode gave me so much whiplash in its pacing. Nothing is given anytime to really develop they could've done a lot more with Horatio reuniting with his brother and family. Also there is subplot with the squad back in Miami. Why? Why do we need to see them solve a case that takes up probably like 10 minutes of screen time that could have been used to better pace out what was happening in Rio. Don't get me wrong I think Boa Vista slowly learning the ropes and becoming a CSI is fine. Let her grow as a character, but why in the episode where you have so much already going on.

The shots in Rio were nice even if they did have colour correction over them. And for that I'll give it a 2.
