Utopia writer Dennis Kelly has shared a few details about the second series of his dystopian Channel 4 thriller Utopia…
Earlier this year, Channel Four thriller Utopia splashed acid yellow over a particularly grey January. Its attention-grabbing story of hit-men, deadly viruses, and global conspiracy shook TV audiences from their post-Christmas slumber and showed them a world where graphic novels hid deadly secrets and mad scientists made deals with the devil. With ‘Where Is Jessica Hyde?’, it also coined the creepiest catchphrase since those twins asked The Shining’s Danny to pop round for a play date.
Speaking to comedy and television writer Vicky Nangle as part of a Space event held last month in Brighton, Utopia writer Dennis Kelly spoke about writing the series, dealing with controversies, and what he has planned for the second run, due to begin filming this October…...

So, remember when it was announced last fall that a biopic on reality TV sensation Susan Boyle was in the works? Well, it looks like she's going to star in a movie first. The singer is set to make her feature film debut alongside "Les Miserables" star Samantha Barks in “The Christmas Candle," the plot of which sounds about a corny as the title. Based on the Max Lucado novella, the period film concerns the titular Christmas candle, and what happens when it goes missing. Of course, a holiday miracle and various human contrivances will make sure it's discovered again. A pretty decent cast has been rounded up for this one, including Hans Matheson (the non-musical 1998 “Les Miserables”), Lesley Manville (“Another Year”), John Hannah (“The Mummy”), James Cosmo (“Game of Thrones”), Sylvester McCoy (“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”) and Barbara Flynn (“Miss Potter”). John Stephenson is directing the movie, which is currently shooting,...

She's unstoppable! Fresh from singing "One Day More" at the Oscars, Susan Boyle has been hired to make her first feature film!
According to THR, the global-singing sensation, will join the cast of John Stephenson's "The Christmas Candle." Boyle will co-star alongside Samantha Barks ("Les Miserables"), Hans Matheson ("Clash of the Titans") and Lesley Manville ("Another Year").
Set in 1890 and billed as a "timeless and inspirational story," "The Christmas Candle" is about angels, and candles, and Christmas, of course!
Eric Newman and Candace Lee wrote and produced the film which also stars Sylvester McCoy ("The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey"), John Hannah ("The Mummy") and Barbara Flynn ("Miss Potter") with James Cosmo (TV's "Game of Thrones").
We don't know yet what Boyle's character is, but she said in a statement that "Everyone on set is a delight to work with and it's a fantastic experience to be part of the team.

The box office power of some movie actors is affecting the types of plays staged on Broadway. Should they hold such sway?
When it was announced that David Tennant would be playing Richard II for the RSC both in Stratford and at the Barbican over Christmas, there were rumours of a rush for membership from those eager to get priority booking. If Tennant read the telephone directory aloud it would probably sell out, but the actor and Richard II seem made for each other – a nifty piece of casting in which the interests of star, box office and artistry collide.
But what happens when it's the names who start calling the shots and dictating what plays we see? To some extent it's already the case, of course: it's unlikely that there would be a Hamlet in the West End without a Jude Law, an actor with proven sellability. But in...

Late last year we got word that Sean Penn was looking to re-team with his 21 Grams director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, and bring Leonardo DiCaprio along with him, for The Revenant. But then just last week the director jumped to another project, based on Jennifer Vogel’s crime drama Flim-Flam Man: The True Story of My Father’s Counterfeit Life. And today we got word that DiCaprio will actually be collaborating with Martin Scorsese for his next project. So, where does this leave Sean Penn?
Vulture has the full story, which goes into all the details, but for the basic gist, DiCaprio was passionate about The Revenant, whereas Penn was more attracted to Flim-Fam Man (now being titled Red Flag). As financing geared up for the latter film, it gave DiCaprio a reason to exit for his Scorsese project and Penn could step in on this new Inarritu feature, where he...

Mexican auteur Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu has enjoyed a nice rest since he delivered the bleak drama Biutiful at the Cannes Film Festival two years ago, the film that later earned two Oscar nominations for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Actor for lead Javier Bardem.
Last year there was talk of him setting up the period vengeance thriller The Revenant with Sean Penn and Leonardo DiCaprio but, as tends to happen with busy people, it never really got any momentum and talk of the film went cold.
Now Variety reports that he has put The Revenant aside for a little while and he is gearing up to direct a different project altogether, an adaptation of Jennifer Vogel’s memoirs “Flim-Flam Man: The True Story Of My Father’s Counterfeit Life,” that he has setup at 20th Century Fox subsidiary New Regency.

After his excellent debut Amores Perros, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu has been a slight downward spiral with each new project. I’m not talking a M. Night Shyamalan-level descent, but each new film has found lesser levels of success with his Javier Bardem-starring Biutiful barely making an impact, even with two top Oscar nominations. Regardless, as a big fan of the director I look forward to anything he does next and tonight, we have an idea of what that may be.
Variety reports that Inarritu has climbed aboard a new drama based on Jennifer Vogel’s Flim-Flam Man: The True Story of My Father’s Counterfeit Life, with New Regency set to finance the film. Following the true story of Vogel’s father experiences in the criminal underworld, this film is set to shoot before his other planned film The Revenant, which has Sean Penn and Leonardo DiCaprio attached.

Following the success of Kathy Burke's Little Cracker short film, which aired on Sky 1 over Christmas 2010, the actress has written her first ever TV series, which has been picked up by Sky Atlantic.
Young Kathy harboured a dream to be an actress, but circumstance and her upbringing made it an unlikely dream.
The four-part Walking and Talking tells stories inspired from her teenage years - time spent skiving from school with her best friend, talking about boys and planning for the future. Her Little Cracker told of how a chance meeting with The Clash changed her life.
17 year old Ami Metcalf (represented by Kelly Management) will reprise her role starring as the young Kathy with Aimee-Ffion Edwards (Sketch from Skins) again playing her best friend.
Kathy Burke herself will also appear in each episode as Angry Nun, alongside Sean Gallagher (Coronation Street, Linda Green, Death in Paradise) who will play Pretty Nun,...

A small independent cafe in London's West End, frequented by actors since 1965, is facing closure. Now it has become the subject of an A-list campaign to save it – and a focus for growing discontent over the homogenisation of the high street
From first-night parties to snacks grabbed on the way to rehearsal, one small cafe has served the actors, dancers and musicians of London's theatreland for nearly five decades with reliable congeniality. Hit shows have come and gone, stars risen and fallen, but the falafels at Gaby's Deli have remained a crowd-pleaser. Until this Christmas, however, when the future suddenly looked bleak for the West End institution, as a planning application was passed for its redevelopment as a chain restaurant.

29 more days to go until Fantastic Fest 2011 takes over Austin Texas! I cannot wait. 17 more films were announced late last week. Only one of those 17 films was on our “Film Guestimation” list for Fantastic Fest 2011. They still have yet to announce Opening & Closing films along with other Gala screenings so hopefully we won’t look like total fools. All we need is maybe half of our films that we listed to show up. Anyway, beyond the break, you can check out what is playing.
Apparently, more films will be announced this week. We will try to get those out as soon as we hear about it.
Events & Contests
100 Best Kills
One of the greatest long-running traditions of Fantastic Fest is the 100 Best Kills Party, where we sit in a theater together and turn the spotlight on the Grim Reaper of movieland as he disembowels, detonates and decapitates again and again and again.

In addition to the line-up of 17 new films making their world, North American or Us premieres, Fantastic Fest has some great contests and one hottie of a new director in Kristen Bell.

VOD must be quite a profitable avenue for Magnet, as they will debut Lars von Trier‘s highly-anticipated Cannes hit Melancholia on the digital platform over a month before its theatrical release in November. Vulture has the official Us poster premiere (using the same key art as the rest) as well as the news of an October 7th, 2011 VOD release date for the drama starring Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, John Hurt, Alexander Skarsgard, Stellan Skarsgard and Udo Kier.
It will then debut in theaters on November 11th, but it has also just been announced as part of the Fantastic Fest line-up. Check out their second wave of titles after the poster for the fest that runs from September 22nd to the 29th.

Actor best known for his role as one of the Italian Job gang
Frank Jarvis, who has died suddenly aged 69, was a prolific actor with a particular commitment to theatre. He did, however, have a minor claim to film immortality as one of the gang of cockney villains, led by Michael Caine, who pull off a robbery, but do not quite get away with it, in The Italian Job (1969). Greeted upon its initial release as merely one of many caper movies (a view that persists in the Us), repeated television screenings in Britain have given it status as a minor classic.
Jarvis's role was as a getaway driver, well-dressed and continually smoking. Oh, that rascal Sherlock Holmes. First he’s terrorizing the police with his clever deduction skills, then he’s messing around with Jude Law’s dog, all the while trying to get into Rachel McAdams’ pants. Or, er, skirt. Or, er, corset. Whatever the fashionable ladies are wearing in this new, latest International trailer for Guy Ritchie’s “Sherlock Holmes” that has popped up online. It’s not the best quality, but the gags and jokes do come through just fine. Detective Sherlock Holmes and his stalwart partner Watson engage in a battle of wits and brawn with a nemesis whose plot is a threat to all of England. Starring Rachel McAdams, Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Mark Strong, Kelly Reilly, James Fox, Eddie Marsan, Hans Matheson, Geraldine James, and directed by Guy Ritchie. Holmes brings the mystery Christmas 2009.
