Sex & Nudity

  • Some comments and implications of rape (see "Violence & Gore").
  • Brief comments about an old woman's breasts retaining their round shape and smelling pleasant because she puts jasmine flowers in her bra.
  • A dog humps a woman's leg and we see his genitals.
  • The main character gets into some sexual relations where sex is sometimes mentioned but never shown.
  • A woman catches a man in bed with a woman.
  • Brief dialogues involving virginity and sleeping with men.
  • The protagonist's grandmother makes many different remarks involving vulgar terms about penises.

Violence & Gore

  • Four kids threaten to beat up another boy with nails. They are stopped before they can do it, however.
  • A little girl is told by her father that she's going to "get some" (a beating) for harassing another child.
  • At least two references to rape, including a comment about men raping dissident women in prison so that they can be executed as non-virgins. A girl falls asleep in the street as shadows of men approach her; rape is implied.
  • A severely ill man is seen lying in bed; he later dies.
  • A boy attempts to flee some guards by jumping from one building to the next, but falls between them many floors below, and is killed.
  • Talk of child martyrs given plastic keys to paradise (symbolic call to die for Islam); children are seen purposely stomping on land mines to blow themselves up for the cause. One boy is talked out of it.
  • A bloody body of a boy is lifted up in the streets.
  • Pictures of the United States flag with skeletons on it are seen.
  • Some slapping, hitting.
  • Some images of people being shot which are often in shadows or stylized and never bloody.
  • Reference to thousands dying.
  • Any violence is done very subtly and is mostly not disturbing.

Profanity

  • The English subtitled version features uses of the words "whore" and "slut" targeted towards the main character. In pirated versions of the subtitled film, some uses of "whore" have been changed to "prostitute" and "hooker".
  • Some mild crude humour (uses of the word "fart", a dog humping a girl's leg, a boy picking his nose and eating the boogers while sighing erotically, a girl vomiting).
  • Some brief racial slurs against an Iranian woman, including that she is a savage, an ugly duckling, a barbarian, has no manners, is illiterate and has a big nose. Some of these remarks are dwelled on by the character herself.
  • The following is for the English dub, which has more language than the original French:
  • Several uses of shit and bastard. Some uses of bitch, dick, and prick. Two uses of fuck but not in a sexual manner.
  • English Subtitled: (Any other uses of profanity are already listed above for the English dub version).
  • At least two uses of the word fuck.
  • Six uses of the word cunt, used frequently in one particular scene.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A woman stomps up and down on grapes to make wine in a bathtub.
  • People smoke in the film, both cigarettes and marijuana.
  • Several scenes of alcohol use, mainly at parties.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The film deals with heavy subject matter, including rape, war, communism, death, divorce, censorship, authoritarianism and mental health.
  • Strong themes of controversial political and religious matters may bother and frighten some viewers. There is strong pro-communism rhetoric; at the same time, communist dissidents are arrested, raped and executed by radical Islamists, which can be quite shocking and is sometimes shown on-screen.
  • In conclusion, this film is depressing at times.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • A man tells a teenage girl not to run to school because it makes her behind wiggle suggestively. Angry at him, she shouts out "then don't look at my ass!" before continuing to run to school.
  • A boy sits in class during a speech wearing pants that show off the shape of his crotch. The main character remarks how it's unfair for women to have to wear heavy clothes while men can dress inappropriately, much to the shock of her teachers.
  • The main character says to nun that the nun was a hooker.

Violence & Gore

  • A little girl watches Godzilla with her grandmother, which features Japanese people being stepped on and killed by a giant lizard. Later, while walking home, the grandmother remarks that "those Japanese can't do anything but make gory horror films and cut their stomachs open!" (a reference to a traditional suicide ritual in Japan that is no longer seen).
  • The main character sees a dismembered arm sticking out from a pile of rubble in a bombed apartment complex. Upon noticing a familiar charm bracelet on it, she screams in horror because it's her best friend who is implied to have been killed.
  • A girl reminisces about the hanging of an adult female friend of hers for going against Islam.
  • A girl tries to commit suicide with pills, but fails.
  • A young woman ends up homeless and has to sleep in an alleyway outside. Jagged shadows of men approach, and an offscreen rape is implied.
  • A girl's mother frantically shouts about how her daughter could be executed for going against extreme Islamic values. She tells her that it's illegal to kill a virgin, so she'll be forcefully married and raped by a prison guard and then killed. Terrified she sends her daughter abroad to Europe.
  • A little girl marches around her living room chanting "death to the Shah!" over and over, copying the chant of a massive protest in the streets. Her mother gets annoyed and snaps at her to go to bed.

Profanity

  • Marji goes to an alternative heavy metal concert in Vienna, and sees a member of the band flash an obscene gesture (the middle finger) at the audience.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A woman swallows many prescription pills at once in an attempt to commit suicide.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • There are some very sad scenes. For example, Marjane's final hour with her uncle before he is executed is a very heartbreaking scene.
  • There are a few intense parts of the film including a house getting destroyed by a bomb, and Marjane overdosing on anti-depressants.
