The Best Christmas Horror Movies: From Gremlins to Black Christmas!
Image
‘Tis the season to watch holiday-themed horror, so we here at Arrow in the Head have decided to compile a list of the Best Christmas Horror Movies! All of the films below are, at the very least, set around Christmastime, and some of them take the connection to the holidays further than that. Here are the top 12 horror movies that we recommend checking out over the next week:

I Come In Peace (1990)

It’s easy to forget that I Come in Peace (a.k.a. Dark Angel) is set around the Christmas holiday, because Christmas is mostly just represented by some set decorations – and you’re distracted from those decorations by all the awesome stuff going on around them. Dolph Lundgren stars as Jack Caine, a Houston detective who doesn’t play by the rules. He’s stuck working with stuffy, suit-wearing FBI agent Larry Smith (Brian Benben), and these...

Before 'Yellowstone,' Wes Bentley Starred in a Christmas Horror Thriller
Image
Quick Links Wes Bentley Is Delightfully Chilling as a Homicidal Maniac in 'P2' 'P2' Deserves to Be a Christmas (And Non-Christmas) Horror Staple Roger Ebert Was Right (And Many Other Critics Were Wrong) About 'P2'

Wes Bentley has demonstrated an uncanny ability throughout his career to act with his eyes. In the Part 2 premiere of the fifth and final season of Yellowstone, the anguished stare of Bentley’s character, the tortured Jamie Dutton, reflects the self-loathing and shock of an adopted black-sheep son who ordered a hit on his father, Yellowstone patriarch John Dutton, far more effectively than any amount of dialogue could.

Bentley’s haunting, merciless stare has enabled the actor to play many memorable villain roles, as seen with his performances as demon Blackheart in Ghost Rider, bloodthirsty game-maker Seneca Crane in The Hunger Games, and corrupt politician Adleman Lusk in Jonah Hex,...

12 Nights of Fright: Christmas Horror Movies to Stream
Image
Christmas may be the season of joy and goodwill, but for horror fans, it’s also the perfect time for festive fright. Snow-covered streets, twinkling lights, and the cheerful sound of carols make the ideal backdrop for chills, screams, and yuletide terror. If you’re in the mood for killer Santas, haunted holidays, and seasonal slashers, this list of Christmas horror films will make your holidays frightfully fun.

Let’s dive into The 12 Frights for Christmas, where every film is a bloody gift for your inner horror fanatic.

12 Frights for Christmas 1. Black Christmas (1974)

The Original Christmas Slasher

Long before Michael Myers stalked babysitters, Black Christmas terrified audiences with its chilling tale of a killer targeting sorority sisters during the holidays. With unsettling phone calls and a shocking ending, this cult classic is a must-watch.

Why It Slays: It’s the blueprint for holiday horror and one of the earliest examples...

11 Cat & Mouse Horror Films You Should Watch
Image
It’s the official season of the macabre and the weird , folks. Therefore, people are scrambling to assemble their watch lists for Halloween because some people like to stay in. And sure, I think watching Halloween (1978) every year as a tradition is a great way to spend the holiday. I also think that trying something new is great too, and that means a specific set of recommendations. What exactly? Cat and mouse horror movies.

Cat and mouse is one of those heart pounding subgenres in horror. Watching people be relentlessly pursued and have to hide from a threat is terrifying. And that’s more specifically if it’s executed properly. Adding one of the following films to your watchlist might make for a bloody good time. So kick back and get ready because these cat and mouse horror films are stressful (in the best way).

Also, have a safe and...

Mirrors (2008) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
Before rewatching Mirrors (get it Here), I was a little confused as to why it’s either forgotten or, honestly, kind of hated on. It was one of those movies that I saw in theaters when it came out and then have clear memories of when it came to my Blockbuster for rent. It’s got a fun cast of reliables and was directed by one of the early 2000s freshest and goriest directors. The director has gone on to have a steady and varied career and his new movie starring Halle Berry called Never Let Go sounds as intriguing as ever. After watching Mirrors again, I still really enjoyed it, but I now understand why it has the reputation it has and why it’s perfect for a black sheep. Let’s take a look but maybe be wary of any mirrors that don’t look exactly right.

When...

The Gate II (1990) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
We’ve talked a lot about what makes a black sheep a black sheep. It can be a number of things really. We look at horror series and see what the underappreciated or even outright hated ones are to lift them up and defend them. It can also be a relatively underseen or unknown entity in the career of an actor, director, or series of films to shine a light and get it on more radars. A black sheep can be seen as bad at the time of its release (or even now) and just needs someone to speak of the positives for the flick. The Gate II (get it Here) is, well, it’s all of that. It’s a mostly underseen and unknown movie in a short horror series that is not really loved by the people who have seen it. With the first movie in the series being a spooky kids classic,...

Sega Reportedly Doubling Down on Like a Dragon and Persona Series in the Best Way
Image
Sega has enjoyed a fortunate year as its sales revenue jumped 20 percent, as per its latest financial report ending March 31, 2024. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth and Persona 3 Reload were among the major factors in this drive, but Rovio’s acquisition pushed the company’s revenue higher. Both of these games sold over a million copies within a week of their launch.

Apart from games, Sega had a successful journey in the film industry, as it saw Sonic the Hedgehog find its place in the sun. The company desires to expand the reach of its IPs, but before that, it may throw a lot of content from the Like a Dragon and Persona franchises.

Sega Should Focus on Quality if it is to Release Those Games

The original Persona 3 was released in 2006.

Sega must have its hands full if the recent reports surfacing on the internet are true. The company is potentially planning new titles,...

The Halloween After Party: November Horror Releases from 1970 to 2023
Image
Who on earth would want to release a horror movie in November?! That’s like showing up to Thanksgiving dinner on a full stomach or going for a jog after a marathon. Surely, studios don’t purposefully plan to release their movie during the four weeks After the entire world is consumed with the dead, dying, maimed and dismembered, right? The calendar says spooky season is over (although you and I know differently) and as the grumpy neighbor in Halloween II says, the general audience has “been trick or treated to death” by October’s end.

On the contrary, November Horror has had some shockingly great runs over the years. And maybe there’s a method to the madness. If horror fans are lucky, October is packed tighter than a Black Friday sale at Target during a live in store Taylor Swift performance. Why not wait a couple of weeks...

‘Night of the Hunted’ Review (Shudder)
Image
Stars: Camille Rowe, Jeremy Scippio, Stasa Stanic | Written by Franck Khalfoun, Glen Freyer | Directed by Franck Khalfoun

Night of the Hunted, the latest film from Franck Khalfoun is a remake, but not of Jean Rollin’s 1980 paranoid thriller of the same name, though that would be a logical choice for rebooting in these conspiracy-riddled times. Instead, he and co-writer Glen Freyer have reworked and updated Rubén Ávila Calvo and David R.L.’s 2015 Spanish thriller Night of the Rat.

This film begins in a hotel room where Alice is talking to her husband on the phone, we hear something about an appointment with a fertility specialist before she hurriedly hangs up as John enters the room. Driving back to town in the pre-dawn darkness they make a stop for gas despite Jiohn’s insistence that he filled the tank the day before. Alice goes in to grab some snacks, and as...

‘P2’ – Underrated Movie Dives into the Dangers of Being Alone at Christmas
Image
In this special holiday edition of The Silver Lining, we’ll be covering Franck Khalfoun’s overlooked urban horror movie, P2.

From gothic castles to isolated suburbs, horror stories are usually set far away from bustling urban centers. While there are occasional examples of urban horror flicks, such as Candyman and Maniac Cop, writers usually tend to avoid heavily populated areas because the abundance of people means that it’s harder to believe our main characters are actually in danger.

However, any fan of True Crime will tell you that being around other people doesn’t necessarily guarantee your safety, as many (if not most) horrific deaths do in fact happen in large cities, with onlookers and law enforcement often being unable -or unwilling- to intervene when something terrible happens. It’s real stories like these that inspired 2007’s P2, an underrated urban thriller that dives into the very plausible...

‘Drive to Survive’: Formula 1 Doc’s Latest Season Is the Perfect Time to Jump In on a Netflix Sensation
Image
Speed is something of a universal language, so it’s no surprise that “Formula 1: Drive to Survive” — a show with plenty of it — has become a Netflix sports doc staple. Following the drivers and teams on the international Formula 1 open-wheel racing circuit, the series tracks the on- and off-track exploits of some of the world’s top drivers as they navigate treacherous road courses and the persistent drama of a high-stakes, high-reward enterprise.

It’s a method the show returns to again and again, but the tension of these drivers lined up at the starting grid waiting for the signature five red lights to disappear and signal the start of the race is as primal an idea as you can get in the sports world. Going from nothing to all-out exertion, even if it’s done with the aid of a finely honed, multi-million-dollar vehicle is something to build a show around.

Psychonauts 2 Invincibility Option Brings Out Video Game Difficulty Gatekeepers
Wes Bentley and Rachel Nichols in P2 - Schreie im Parkhaus (2007)
The reveal of Psychonauts 2‘s upcoming invincibility toggle has reignited an increasingly frustrating debate over video game difficulty.

In case you missed it, the Xbox team recently sent out a tweet that simply read “Beating the game on the lowest difficulty is still beating the game.” While that tweet proved to be controversial enough with those who strongly disagree with that seemingly simple sentiment (more on that in a bit), things really got interesting when Psychonauts 2 developer Double Fine decided to weigh in on the topic.

If you beat Psychonauts 2 with the invincibility toggle on, you still beat P2. https://t.co/OinBv1nuNr

— Double Fine (@DoubleFine) July 9, 2021

Interestingly, that happened to be the first time Double Fine mentioned that Psychonauts 2 will include an invincibility toggle. While Double Fine later joked about their response to this tweet, they did confirm that Psychonauts 2 will indeed have an invincibility option and that...

Image
If you've listened to our Corpse Club member-exclusive episode, then you know we're big fans of Junji Ito, the imaginative mind behind so many memorable manga creations, including Tomie, which is moving forward as an adaptation series on Quibi with Alexandre Aja directing, David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick writing, and Adeline Rudolph starring in the lead role.

A premiere date and release schedule for Tomie has yet to be announced, but we'll keep Daily Dead readers updated as more details are announced. In the meantime, we have additional info below, and in case you missed it, Aja discussed the Tomie series when we interviewed him last year for his new movie Crawl.

In January, the Atlanta-based hip-hop producer TM88 received an urgent call from the rapper Lil Uzi Vert, who was craving a beat reminiscent of his hit “Xo Tour Llif3.” Over the next few days, the two men spent hours on FaceTime perfecting a track together. “He’s like, ‘take that out [of the beat], do this,’ I’m doing it, sending it back,” TM88 recalled recently. “I’m telling him what I don’t like about the lyrics. There is a thriving new genre of internet videos that document rap superstar Lil Uzi Vert descending from his celebrity perch to mingle with the people — walking (or running) among us, casually interfacing with his fans on sidewalks, at department stores, amusement parks, and festival grounds. When the flow of new Uzi music slowed considerably after his 2017 album Luv is Rage 2, these videos helped fill that void. Amazon Prime Adding Tons Of Great Horror Movies In January
Hereditary was so 2018.

Writer-director Ari Aster returned this year with Midsommar, and though it’s a good idea to always approach new horror movies with a sense of cautious optimism, Aster’s sophomore effort certainly lived up to the hype.

Following a group of friends who travel to Sweden to attend a summertime festival, it’s all good old-fashioned fun under the Scandinavian sun…until it becomes something far more sinister and things start to get pretty dark and twisted. You see, this festival isn’t really a festival at all, but rather….well, we won’t spoil it for you here, because if you haven’t yet seen the film, you’ll have the chance to next month on Amazon Prime.

That’s right, the steaming site will be adding Midsommar, along with a number of other great horror movies, to its platform beginning in January, and for a...

Kaya Scodelario in Crawl (2019)
‘Crawl’ Fits into Paramount’s Plan to Return to ‘Iconic Status,’ Viacom CEO Bob Bakish Says
Kaya Scodelario in Crawl (2019)
“It’s about an alligator and a hurricane and a daughter that goes looking for her father in a flooded house. Look, it actually got a great response.”

That’s how Viacom CEO Bob Bakish, speaking to a packed house at the Paley Center for Media last month, described the premise of Paramount Pictures’ latest release “Crawl,” which hits theaters this weekend.

The crowd laughed, but Bakish is high on “Crawl” and what the film represents for Paramount’s strategy moving forward as the studio looks to ascend back to the mountain top — or at least a peak.

“Crawl” earned $1 million at the box office in early Thursday showings, which put it ahead of Fox’s Dave Bautista and Kumail Nanjiani-led action-comedy “Stuber.” The hurricane horror film, produced by Sam Raimi and...

Review: Alexandre Aja’s Crawl is a Thrilling Reminder That Nature Can Be Scary as Hell
While aquatic horror can be fun any time of the year, there’s just something about a genre movie that pits human characters versus nature’s greatest water-bound predators during these warmer months that really puts me into the summertime mood. And with that in mind, you could say that I was already primed to enjoy Crawl even before the first bloodthirsty alligator snapped into action. Director Alexandre Aja, who already has some experience in this realm with his gore-tastic horror comedy Piranha 3D, proves here yet again that he’s a master manipulator of heightened tension and thrills, but he also delivers up a no-nonsense disaster/killer animal mash-up that doesn’t waste a single minute of its efficient 87-minute running time, and even gives us compelling characters (plus Sugar the dog!) that we give a damn about to boot.

Written by Michael and Shawn Rasmussen, Crawl transports us...

Horror-On-Sea 2019: ‘Once Upon a Time at Christmas’ Review
Stars: Simon Phillips, Yana Gold, Sayla de Goede, Laurel Brady, Robert Nolan, Jeff Ellenberger, Devon Mary Doherty, Brook Fletcher, Barry Kennedy, Susannah Mackay, Blue Bigwood-Mallin | Written by Christopher Jolley | Directed by Paul Tanter

[Note: With the film screening as part of this years Horror-On-Sea Film Festival, here's a reposting of our review of the seasonal slasher Once Upon a Time at Christmas]

Christmas horror is one of my favourite sub genres. It of course includes such classics as Gremlins, Black Christmas, Silent Night, Deadly Night and Krampus. But with a collection like mine, it also includes lesser known or cult classic titles such as P2, Santa’s Slay, Jack Frost and Rare Exports… to name but a few. So I am always on the look out for new holiday horror. Which is the reason I watched Once Upon A Time At Christmas well outside of the usual November/December time frame.

Once Upon A Time At Christmas is, in very basic terms, a slasher movie set at Christmas – which is no bad thing.

Impressions: Yuletide Terror: Christmas Horror On Film And Television
While we may already be a few months past the Christmas season, that doesn’t mean there aren’t still plenty of gifts to unwrap in the recent book Yuletide Terror: Christmas Horror on Film and Television, which features essays and interviews from an authoritative collective of writers who dig deep into everything we love about festive frights and seasonal scares. There are definitely several expected titles featured in Yuletide Terror, like Black Christmas and Silent Night, Deadly Night, but there are quite a few surprising topics that are included here as well that I really enjoyed because I knew little to nothing about them, resulting in a reading experience that was highly enjoyable and informative to boot.

Yuletide Terror starts off with the proverbial one-two punch of essays on the two aforementioned Christmas-themed horror films (I’d argue that both Bob Clark’s original Black Christmas and Silent Night,...

Recommended New Books on Filmmaking: ‘The Shape of Water,’ Jean-Luc Godard, Yuletide Terror, and More
Our latest deep-dive into recent books on cinema is heavy on 2017 follow-ups. But there’s also a unique look at late Godard, a romp through holiday horror, and a visually inventive stroll through 101 memorable movies. Let’s march on, starting with every cinephile’s buddy, Guillermo del Toro.

Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water: Creating a Fairy Tale for Troubled Times by Gina McIntyre (Insight Editions)

Guillermo del Toro’s fairy tale romance The Shape of Water was heralded by some as one of 2017’s finest (I’m in that camp) or as 2017’s The Artist (boo). Wherever one stands in this debate, its aesthetic beauty is undeniable. In other words, Shape is more than deserving of the Insight Editions treatment. The book is a gorgeous concoction, filled with del Toro’s endearing sketches, effects tests, film stills, and, best of all, accompanying text that is smart and...

Amityville: The Awakening Trailer: Yep, That House is Still Haunted
Originally scheduled to be dumped on January 2nd, 2015, Amityville: The Awakening — the fourteenth (!) movie in the Amityville movie saga — was removed from the calendar and eventually rescheduled for release this year. Dimension Films claims to have released a new trailer, but it's exactly the same as the one we posted in August of 2014, with the only exception being the date has been removed from the very end and replaced with the words "coming soon."

What is new, however, is the poster (above) that looks like an Instagram post, which I believe is the first movie poster to use that design. In any case, the movie itself looks like a retread of haunted house cliches, but horror buffs and Amityville completists (are there such people?) will probably want to check it out anyway.

Side note: this is apparently based on a true story, but seriously: how does a modern family move...

Bella Thorne in Amityville: The Awakening (2017)
'Amityville: Awakening' Trailer Takes Bella Thorne on A Scary Ride
Bella Thorne in Amityville: The Awakening (2017)
Way back in August 2014, Dimension Films released the first trailer for Amityville: The Awakening, which at the time, was scheduled to hit theaters on January 2, 2015. Just a month later, the studio yanked the film out of its release date, and we haven't heard anything about it since then. Today, The Weinstein Company has released yet another trailer, which features largely the same footage as the first teaser, with the movie now set for release on April 1. This thriller will be going up against Collide, God's Not Dead 2 and Rings.

Amityville: The Awakening is a revival of the popular franchise and a modern twist on the classic horror film. In the movie, Belle (Bella Thorne) and her family move into a new house, but when strange phenomena begin to occur, Belle begins to suspect her Mother isn't telling her everything and soon realizes they just moved into the infamous Amityville house.

Nostalgic First Trailer For Amityville: The Awakening Resurrects Dormant Horror
Pack your bags, folks, Amityville village is calling once more. In what will be the 13th installment in the genre-defining franchise, Dimension Films and Blumhouse Productions are primed to situate the infamous supernatural tale in the modern age with Amityville: The Awakening.

Written and directed by Franck Khalfoun (Maniac, P2), the feature hues close to tradition by setting up the story of an average family moving into a new home – but this isn’t just any home. Having played host to a series of violent murders in the mid-70s, Bella Thorne’s teenage girl soon begins to realize that there’s something amiss under her family’s new roof, and it all appears to center around her bed-ridden brother (Cameron Monaghan).

Cue supernatural activity and nightmarish apparitions, with the official logline describing The Awakening as so: “Belle and her family move into a new house, but when strange phenomena...

‘Amityville: The Awakening’ Gets an Effective Poster and Less-Than-Effective Trailer
Once set for a release over a year ago, it’s taking quite some time for The Weinstein Company to dump Amityville: The Awakening into theaters. Barring any future delays, the “revival” of the franchise will now arrive on April 1st, and while our hopes for it aren’t very high, Blumhouse has released an inventive new poster for the horror film.

Taking an note from their campaign for the single-screen horror Unfriended — which actually turned out to be great — the first effective poster utilizes the instantly recognizable Instagram frame as it teases the infamously villainous house. The Weinstein Company have also released the trailer, which is just the same one they let out of the gate early a few years back.

Directed by Franck Khalfoun (Maniac) and starring Jennifer Jason Leigh, Bella Thorne, Cameron Monaghan, Thomas Mann, and Kurtwood Smith, check out the trailer and poster below.

Why Did 'We Are Your Friends' Have One of the Worst Openings of All Time?
Zac Efron's "We Are Your Friends" was unfriended by most of the country this weekend. The Edm movie, co-starring Wes Bentley and Emily Ratajkowski, was released on 2,333 screens but only made $1.8 million. That's not just short of the $8 million projection, it's also the worst wide-release launch of Efron's career and one of the worst openings of any studio film ever.

Entertainment Weekly culled the list of the top 10 worst wide-release movies ever, and "We Are Your Friends" ended up at No. 3, just behind "Delgo" and "Oogieloves In The Big Balloon Adventure." This movie actually did worse than the much-mocked "The Adventures of Pluto Nash" and marks Wes Bentley's second time on the list, since he was also in the horror movie "P2."

According to Variety, Warner Bros. only spent $2 million to acquire "We Are Your Friends." Warner Bros. distribution executive vice president Jeff Goldstein commented on the opening: "We're disappointed,...

[Yuletide Terrors] Day 18: P2
Throughout the month of December, we will be highlighting a film a day that has some tie into the holiday somehow. Some titles will be obvious, others won’t be. Some films will be good and, again, others won’t be. However, we think all titles are worth your time whether to give you chills inside your home or to make you drink more eggnog until you puke laughing.

For Angela (Rachel Nichols) her career is everything. She seems to thrive on long hours and late night. Even on Christmas Eve Angela is going strong. And when she’s finally on the way to her sister’s, her car won’t start. She asks the seemingly friendly security guard, Thomas (Wes Bentley) for help. He seems nice enough if maybe a bit odd. Angela becomes trapped by in the parking garage below her office, held captive by Thomas. It seems...

‘The Pyramid’ Trailer Unwraps Old-School Scares For Modern Audiences
Ashley Hinshaw in The Pyramid: Grab des Grauens (2014)
(Cbr) Mummy movies used to be all the rage back in the day, with Universal Pictures and Hammer Films each having its own franchise (the former resurrected its property in 1999, and plans to do so again). Director Grégory Levasseur’s found-footage horror fillm The Pyramid marks a new chapter in the subgenre, as a group of archaeologists explores a newly unearthed pyramid that houses a murderous monster. It’s the directorial debut of Levasseur, who wrote the remakes of The Hills Have Eyes and Maniac, as well as P2 and High Tension. Here’s the film’s synopsis: The ancient wonders of the world have long cursed explorers who’ve dared to uncover their secrets. But a team of U.S. archaeologists gets more than they bargained for when they discover a lost pyramid unlike any other in the Egyptian desert.
