gives "art films" a bad name
Buddy-5128 January 2007
Apparently people just aren't much into "faking it" anymore, even when it comes to sex in the movies. The Mexican film, "Battle in Heaven," opens with a graphic scene of a young woman performing oral sex on the main character - and we can clearly see that this is not a simulation (it's also not much of a stimulation given the man involved). I don't know if the various hardcore scenes were actually included in the movie when it played theatrically in the United States in 2006. But they are certainly in the video, and those easily offended by such activity had best be forewarned.

For me, the sex scenes themselves are not the problem. It is the movie as a whole that I object to. For "Battle in Heaven" is a pretentious, arty contrivance that seems to be operating under the assumption - quite rightly perhaps, since the movie ended up on quite a large number of ten best lists last year - that it can earn points with the critical intelligentsia if it can just manage to bore its audience into a state of complete catatonia.

It tells the desultory and languid tale of an overweight, middle-aged chauffeur who wanders in a zombie-like daze around Mexico City wracked with guilt over the fact that he and his wife recently kidnapped a child who ended up dying under their care. During the course of the film, Marcos (Marcos Hernandez) is able to shake himself out of his stupor long enough to have sex with his wife, sex with his boss' daughter and sex with himself while watching a soccer game. The movie is all about the struggle that is being perpetually waged within the Mexican soul between sex and temptation on the one hand and piety, guilt and the obsessive need for redemption on the other. And while this theme is certainly a valid one and is actually developed to some extent in the closing scenes of the drama, the movie itself is far too inert, far too easily sidetracked, and far too underdeveloped to capture our interest.

TRASH: half sex, half closeups of non-actors
danielmenendezm2 August 2007
This movie was awful. I even understand the language perfectly, and it is still a waste of time. If you want to watch a pornographic film, well, there are better. There would be no other reason to watch this.

It is slower than 2001 with absolutely nothing to redeem it. Nothing here but an endless attack of sex scenes that are too long, tasteless, and pointless. I have no problems with sex scenes, but this made me sick. If it had any message whatsoever--doubtful--it was completely overshadowed. I really wanted to turn it off after the first scene, but afraid of being too harsh, I let it play and gave it a chance. Regretful. Sure, the girl is pretty, but the movie doesn't even let you pay attention to that.

Senseless and merciless
SilverOrlov25 March 2019
An uplifting video that aggressively claims to be some kind of art house or something like that, and which I don't turn my tongue to call a movie. People who like this and who dare to call it "an art not for everyone" or "a film with some not all clear meaning", can only take pity. And those who make such videos need to be treated. Not all dirt in human society, and not all ugliness must be transferred to the screen, throwing it at the viewer.

either you like it / or you don't

well !! i liked it , Was a difficult film to watch owing to its pace. Have to remark i'm so impressed with the non performance of all the artists ,that it was really refreshing to see these pack of people who were truly just characters and not mere actors. Its a bold film, the shock value of this piece still has me doubting the directors intentions about having it stay on his final edits. The potion of graphic nudity and the unsimulated performance is a touch above the required potion. He could have done without being this graphic. Its a vision based film ,a directors film all the way. though i may not agree to a lot of things present- i give it to the director for his conviction of staying by them. Ana- I have to declare i'm so in love with this lady. She has indeed done a wonderful job with her role. Just wondering if those Tibetien tattoos were real? lol Ana is one actress i would love to work with in the future. She truly was the "ANNA" the film required. And yes again Hats off to her commitment to the role - I don't have it in me to do what she did ! THAT WAS BRAVE INDEED ! The flags ceremony was all to confusing to me. Maybe its a local thing but why was it repeated ? Marcos He did a pretty good job as well, considering hes some guy at the govt. office and not a trained actor. He adds flavour to the film.

I would watch the film again ,not soon, but in a while from now . JUST FOR ANNA. she was wonderful. I'm all smitten !!

roll camera!

Brave film-making with something to say
hanzy_boy21 January 2008
I don't disagree that this movie has great flaws. I mean the dialog could be more fluid, the editing could be more crisp, so on so forth.

But while the movie is choppy as a whole, some of the scenes are breathtakingly raw. Like the part where Marcos is driving Ana from the airport, you can see, even almost smell, the city's absurd contrast between its economic classes. When Marcos is just staring into oblivion, you know you're looking at a real person, whose sweat is his own sweat and the grease on his face is his own grease.

There is something mysterious and incomprehensible about the faces of every single person living and struggling in the city. It is not just a face of frustration, anguish, or despair, that a typical actor might give off.

It's a face that is unique to that person, one that you will never get to know probably, but when you take a glance of in the subway or the bus or the sidewalk, you know somehow you relate to them, somehow you know there's a story behind them.

This movie is just a mere glance of one person. It's not quite a study of Marcos, because we never got to be let in that deeply into his past, his motives, his whatever. It's simply presenting his situations and actions as they are, not pushing any particular perspectives the way most films do, not giving us any 'insights,' 'revealing monologues' or any of that.

letting us simply be the judge of him if we are judgmental, the observer if we are observant, the aloof bystander if we are one, and most likely we're a little bit of every one of those types when watching this film.

And that's very commendable for a film to let the viewers ultimately be the camera and the editor of the film. Instead of telling us how to view things.
