- [Harriet and Nellie enter the Ingalls' house. Nellie is totally convered with mud, from head to tow, as a result of the brawl with Laura. Caroline bursts out laughing; Charles and Jonathan laugh too]
- Harriet Oleson: [enraged] You think this is funny, do you? Ugh! Your Laura did this!
- Caroline Ingalls: What?
- Nellie Oleson: She attacked me! Tried to kill me!
- Caroline Ingalls: Why?
- Nellie Oleson: [lies] Because... I saw her and Almanzo Wilder kissing! And I told her I would tell.
- Charles Ingalls: You... saw them... kissing?
- Nellie Oleson: She's with him now! They rode off in his buckboard!
- Charles Ingalls: [scowls] They... they rode off in a buckboard, huh?
- Nellie Oleson: Toward his place!
- Charles Ingalls: Jonathan, I need a ride.
- [Charles and Jonathan walk out]
- Caroline Ingalls: [worried] Charles, don't do anything in haste!
- Charles Ingalls: Haste? Oh no Caroline, I'm not going to do anything in haste! I'm going to take all the time in the world while I beat Almanzo Wilder within an inch of his life!
- Nellie Oleson: Something must be wrong with my eyes. I thought I saw you kiss that little girl.
- Almanzo James Wilder: For luck. She's got a big test today.
- Nellie Oleson: Oh yes. She'll need luck.
- [Laura sits by the lake, sobbing for failing the exam, since Nellie misled her. Nellie sees Laura, and naturally seizes the opportunity to tease her]
- Nellie Oleson: [smiling nastily] Well Laura dear, what a surprise! Almanzo and I were just having lunch together. How did you do on the test?
- Laura Ingalls: [sharply] It was all history.
- Laura Ingalls: [smiling viciously] You're joking!
- Laura Ingalls: Miss Wilder says they're always all history.
- Nellie Oleson: [gloatingly] Well, now that I think back, maybe there was more history than I thought. I hope you're not angry.
- Laura Ingalls: [enraged] Why should I be? It wasn't on purpose, was it?
- Nellie Oleson: [keeps smiling mockingly] Of course not.
- Laura Ingalls: Well, neither is this!
- [Laura grabs Nellie and shoves her into the muddy lake. They fight, both getting covered with mud. Nellie tries to fight back, but Laura has the upper hand. Almanzo arrives and separates between them]
- [Charles, incorrectly thinking the worst of Almanzo, storms into his house and punches his severely without asking for an explanation first. Laura explains what really happened, and that nothing improper occurred between her and Almanzo]
- Almanzo James Wilder: You don't think that I... well, Beth's just a little girl.
- [Laura glares at Almanzo for calling her "a little girl". Charles is embarrassed, realizing he wrongly harmed Almanzo]
- Charles Ingalls: Mr. Wilder, I... uh... I really owe you an apology. I'm very sorry.
- Almanzo James Wilder: [touches his bruised face] Yeah. So am I.
- Charles Ingalls: [ashamed] My wife told me to not act in haste. I guess I should have listened to her.
- Almanzo James Wilder: I understand. If I had a little girl, I'd have probably done the same.
- Laura Ingalls: [furiously] Will you both stop it! Stop calling me a little girl! And talking about me like I'm not even here! I'm a woman! A woman! And I hate all of you!
- [Laura storms outside, slamming the door]
- Laura Ingalls: Can I go back to school now?
- Caroline Ingalls: First you have another apology to make... to Almanzo.
- Laura Ingalls: I can't!
- Caroline Ingalls: You can... and you will.
- Laura Ingalls: I won't. I won't!
