A Gothic keeper
Alan-4023 November 2006
It would be easy to overlook this because the characters are based on a video game, yet here is a remarkably good Gothic novel successfully set in an urban Japanese backdrop. Shiki is a member of the Tohno family, which has more than one dark secret to conceal on the grounds of the imposing family mansion. Shiki and his younger sister are the only family members left, and at the beginning of the story he is moving back into the mansion after being gone for years (a classic Gothic plot device that serves well here).

In spite of being younger, the sister Akiha is a severe authority figure, having been named the heir due to Shiki's infirmity. Although she lays down draconian house rules and coldly upbraids Shiki when he doesn't exactly toe the line, she is also remarkably and obviously caring, and warms considerably as the story goes on. Of course, she has her own secret to keep, and she is made even more interesting in that she still puts on a schoolgirl uniform (ubiquitous in anime) and shepherds herself off to school.

Shiki gets off to a slow start, confused and passive, but as with the best anime characters he gets more self assured as the story unfolds. The events at the start of the story seem clumsy and confusing rather than mysterious, but eventually enough is explained, and enough is left unexplained to sustain the mystery. He meets a mysterious and beautiful woman named Arcueid Brunestud (great name), who really is an 800-year-old vampire on a quest. She draws him into the danger, and although he is reluctant he ultimately finds a plausible moral justification for continuing as an active player.

The other major player is Ciel – more secrets there as well, who was at one point a mortal enemy of Arcueid but now has a wary coincidence of interests with her former foe. The interaction between these two is worth watching.

What makes a good Gothic work so well are the secondary characters offered as part of the story. There are the two servant girls, twins that are eerily loyal and discreet and who, of course, know far more about what is going on than anyone else. Then there is Shiki's classmate and only male friend, Inui, who is both self-assured surprisingly insightful when needed. There is also Satsuki, another classmate who wants to be Shiki's girlfriend.

So Shiki finds himself at the center of attention of four women who each have a different interest in him. It could be a setup for a comedy, but Shiki is not a comical character and treats each with consideration and seriousness.

Although a somber story from start to finish, TLL does provide some humorous moments, mostly around the ill-fated day at the amusement park where all of Shiki's women are gathered in one place for the first time and all their conflicts come to the surface. For me this is where the story starts to turn really interesting, where we see Achimed and Ciel talking over their situation rather than threatening each other.

The artwork in this anime may lack some detail, but it is pleasingly well crafted. Arcueid is presented as a head-turning femme fatale and her general features are consistent with that, she looks almost dowdy with her short haircut, mid-calf skirt and loose turtleneck blouse. Thankfully, there are no cartoonish distortions to depict sudden emotions. Much of the story's violence happens in shadow or off camera, making the most of the power of suggestion. The production doesn't need or indulge in fan service; none of the women are exposed immodestly even during the gratuitous bath scene. There is sexual tension, but it is handled adeptly. This could have been shot as a live-action movie with relatively few special effects, but it is quite effective as it is.

There are a lot of unanswered questions by the end of the last episode, which I believe to be by design rather than by neglect. The fact that the viewer cares to even ponder the questions is a sign that the storytelling has done its work. This is an excellent example of how anime is being used to create interesting drama.

Lunar Legend Tsukihime
Tweekums19 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
High-schooler Shiki Tohno has a strange ability; he sees the threads that bind everything together and by cutting these fragile threads he can destroy anything. One day he accidentally kills a woman using this skill; she doesn't remain dead though as she is vampire Arcueid Brunestud. She has no intention to harm him though and claims to be hunting another vampire who has been terrorising the city. Shiki lives with his sister and over the course of the series learns more about his family history and the forgotten events of ten years previously where he gained his strange ability. Shiki and Arcueid defeat their first opponent but there is another threat; one who possesses others and could possibly be somebody close to Shiki.

This twelve episode series is rather fun thanks to good main characters and an interesting story that doesn't outstay its welcome. Shiki is fine protagonist and his strange skill is original and Arcueid is an unusual vampire with a sense of mystery about her; is she really as good as she claims or is she a potential danger; Shiki's friend Ciel certainly thinks the latter. The antagonists are suitably threatening and there are plenty of gripping action scenes where the protagonists confront them. The characters are well designed and distinctive and the animation is good. Given that is it effectively a horror series it is surprising that it isn't darker in tone but that isn't a bad thing. Overall I'd certainly recommend this less well known series to anime fans.

Cool horror series!

Warning: Spoilers
It's a pretty decent horror series like you would really like Shiki and Arcueid teaming up together to fight horrifying monsters. Even when he takes off his glasses and using his blade to fight the lines on the monsters, you know well that good stuff is going down!

I gotta say even if there were confusing bits to the anime, it's really entertaining and well done. I totally recommend this anime to fans of the horror genre who hasn't seen this yet!

all I can say is... great!

Warning: Spoilers
All I can say is this is a fantastic mini- series. I stumbled across this on you-tube and out of curiosity, started watching it. I was hooked from them first episode, and I ended up watching it throughout the night. It is one of the strangest and most interesting shows in anime that I have ever seen and although I watched it in Japanese (with subs, of course), that didn't make it any less entertaining.

Spoilers: The main character in this show is Shiki, a senior high schooler who can see death lines in people after he had a terrible accident when he was young. At the beginning of the show he moves in with his sister (who is much more than she appears to be)after being away from home for a number of years. He soon meets Arcueid, a vampire whose job it is to keep other other vampires in check, but also one in particular called Roa. Arcueid is incredibly naive about the modern day world, having only just awoken from her sleep, and killed by Shiki once already, she finds herself experiencing feelings and emotions she hasn't in centuries. In her weakened state, Arcuied forces Shiki to help her, and both precede to battle several mean vampires throughout the show.

As I said, this show is very interesting. All the characters have depth to them, and many are not what they appear to be. There are plenty of plot twists and turns to keep the viewer guessing what's going to happen next.

Apparently this is based on a PC game... one which I am going to get!

If you are looking for a moody anime with vampires, look no further!
Wabbajack-227 June 2006
This is a delightful show about Shiki Tohno who's a high school student with a gift to see "lines". When the lines are severed, anything that had the lines will be destroyed. He comes to terms with meeting a real vampire that he supposedly meant and killed. Now Shiki Tohno is forced to team up and help kill other vampires.

The series has a wonderful soundtrack that really fits the mood.(Composed by: Toshiyuki Omori)

The English cast features Michelle Ruff as: Arcueid Brunestud

There are 12 Episodes for the entire series:

1. Inverse Impulse

2. Black Beast

3. Demon Eyes of Direct Death

4. Cradling Garden

5. Bow of the Sky

6. White Dream

7. Blue Ruins

8. Origami

9. Death

10. Crimson Red Moon

11. Night of Disaster

12. Moon World

Shingetsutan Tsukihime is great show to watch and recommend to anime fans out there, especially for Arcueid Brunestud!

Tohno Shiki is a high school student with Shinigami Eyes, a power he rather not use for reasons that are not explained. He kills a woman he never saw before, them she turns to him for help, none of which makes any sense.

Sounds misterious? It is not. Main character knows nothing, everyone else say nothing, and so the story goes nowhere. The animation is pathetic, characters show no facial expressions and barely move at all, so both drama and action are underplayed. If there was a point to this story it was in the main source, it did not translate.

A Romance story amidst mystery, and gets better
saadurrehman7012 May 2021
Yes the first two episodes made the show appear boring and ridiculous, but by the end of the third episode, the show had finally gotten interesting especially in it's romance. Turned out to be very beautiful relationship of love between Arcueid and Shiki.

really good it definitely

Shiki Tohno is a boy who, after an accident as a child, is able to see strange lines coming from objects and people. He has to wear special glasses to stop seeing them. If he cuts some of these lines, he destroys people connected to them. One day he meets a woman called Arcueid and together they start a journey that's going to reveal some secrets of his past.

Overall I really enjoyed this anime and what it had to offer. I hope someday it can get a remake in the same universe as the current Fate series and get licensed by aniplex of usa.

If you enjoy the fate series you should really check this out.
