6 Stars Who Faced Consequences After Inappropriate Tweets, From Roseanne to Alec Baldwin (Photos)
A lot of celebrities have sent out dumb, offensive or tasteless jokes on Twitter. But while most of them just get @’ed with such speed and frequency that they have to issue an apology, delete the tweet, walk back the comments or all of the above, some of these stars have had to face real consequences on account of their 280 characters. Enter Roseanne Barr, who tweeted a racist comment about President Obama’s advisor Valerie Jarrett. Despite “Roseanne” being a huge success, Barr’s show was swiftly cancelled from ABC on Tuesday. These celebrities were similarly slapped with more than just online backlash.

Gilbert Gottfried

Gilbert Gottfried’s has been known for pushing limits and shocking audiences, but his joke about a tsunami that hit Japan didn’t go over so well with insurance company Aflac. Gottfried voiced the Aflac duck in the company’s commercials for 11 years but was fired when he tweeted,...

80-Plus Independent Games Coming to This Year’s BitSummit
More than 80 games are coming to this year’s BitSummit event in Kyoto, Japan, the group announced this week.

Started in late 2012 by James Mielke, former editor-in-chief of video game website 1up.com, BitSummit was created to highlight and celebrate Japanese independent video game development — something overshadowed by the country’s Aaa scene. Over time, the intimate show has grown and is now sponsored by large companies such as Nintendo, Sony, Oculus, and Microsoft, and partnered with companies such as IGN Japan, Twitch, and Japan’s weekly video game magazine Famitsu.

This year’s BitSummit will feature games from all over the world. Some of the highlights include “Chuchel” — developed by the Czech Republic-based Amanita Design — “Vane,” and “Mare” — both of which have been worked on by former “The Last Guardian” artist Rui Guerreiro — and “The Good Life,” created by cult-favorite Hidetaka “Swery” Suehiro. Lassie in Lassie (1954)
The Best Post-Super Bowl TV Episodes of the Last 35 Years
Lassie in Lassie (1954)
Until the 1980s, the networks didn’t give much thought about what they aired after the Super Bowl — it was sometimes golf, “Lassie,” or nothing at all. But then, in 1983, NBC aired the second episode of new action hour “The A-Team,” turning it into an immediate hit. The next year, “Airwolf” launched behind the Super Bowl, and in 1988, ABC found success debuting “The Wonder Years” after the game, solidifying the strategy of premiering brand new shows — at least temporarily.

The gambit wound becoming a bust by the 1990s, as post-Super Bowl shows turned into quick failures: “Grand Slam,” “Davis Rules,” “The Good Life” and “Extreme.” NBC came up with a new strategy in 1996, running an episode of its biggest show there — “Friends” — which allowed it to charge hefty ad rates for what was assuredly a big event.

'Smashed' Soundtrack Features Smog, Richard and Linda Thompson, Cass McCombs & Score by Vetiver & Fruit Bats Members
Every couple of years, a musician will either want to stretch his or her wings creatively and or realize that there's good money in composing soundtracks that beats slugging it out on the road. Recent converts that come to mind are Nick Urrata of DeVotchKa (soundtracks include "Little Miss Sunshine" and the terrifically underrated "Ruby Sparks," both as a movie and score) and Nebraskan producer/engineer, multi-instrumentalist and Bright Eyes member Mike Mogis, who's recorded and performed with The Faint, Rilo Kiley, Cursive, The Good Life, Jenny Lewis, and many more ("Lovely, Still," and "Writers" are two recent soundtracks he's scored with fellow Bright Eyes member Nate Walcott). The latest indie rockers jumping into the arena of scoring soundtracks is Fruit Bats founder Eric D. Johnson. He scored the winning indie picture "Ceremony" and "Our Idiot Brother," and along with...

Titanic 3D Box Office: $2 Billion Worldwide
Kate Winslet, Billy Zane, Titanic Box Office: Guy Pearce / Maggie Grace's Lockout Bombs, Julia Roberts / Lily Collins / Armie Hammer's Mirror Mirror Resilient The Titanic 3D rerelease hasn't broken any box-office records in North America, where it has taken in an estimated $44.41 million after 12 days. Overseas, however, it's another story. This weekend (which includes Wed./Thu. in some territories), Titanic 3D topped the international box office, collecting an estimated $98.9 million at 9,889 theaters in 69 territories (representing more than 100 countries), according to Box Office Mojo. In China alone, James Cameron disaster / romantic epic starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, and veteran Gloria Stuart drew $67 million, an official record for that country (not adjusted for inflation / currency fluctuations). For comparison's sake: several years before China became a box-office powerhouse for Hollywood movies — one likely to surpass the United States in the not-too-distant future — Titanic earned $43.92 million during its initial run in that country.

Titanic 3D Box Office: Much Better Overseas
Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Titanic 3D Gary Ross / Jennifer Lawrence / Liam Hemsworth / Josh Hutcherson's The Hunger Games Passes $300m? Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg's American Reunion landed at no. 2 on the North American box office chart, according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. At 3,192 locations, the R-rated comedy took in $21.5 million — including $660,000 earned at Thursday midnight screenings. That's quite a bit lower than the $25 million some had been expecting as late as Friday evening, or the near-$30 million predicted by Box Office Mojo a few days ago. If those estimates are correct, Universal will surely claim that American Reunion easily surpassed the $18.7 million earned by the original American Pie at 2,508 sites in 1999. In 2012 dollars, however, American Pie would have earned approximately $29 million. And what that means is: many more tickets were sold for American Pie than for American Reunion. Also, remember that American Reunion cost a...

Box Office: The Hunger Games, American Reunion, Titanic 3D
Kate Winslet as Rose, Titanic 3D The Hunger Games will easily top the North American box for the third weekend in a row. Gary Ross' dystopic adventure tale collected $12.9 million on Friday, April 6, according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. The film will likely earn somewhere between $35-$40 million over the Easter weekend. If so, it will be down around 30-35% compared to a week ago — or about half its 62% drop-off rate last (non-holiday) weekend. The Hunger Games should cross the $300 million mark at the domestic box office on Sunday. Its current total is $282.23 million. Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg's American Reunion landed at no. 2 on Friday. At 3,192 locations, the R-rated comedy took in $9.2 million — including $660,000 earned at Thursday midnight screenings. Its weekend total could reach $25 million. If those estimates are correct, Universal will claim that American Reunion far surpassed the $18.7 million earned by the original...

Exclusive premiere: Big Harp "Everybody Pays"
The Good Life (2007)
Husband and wife duo Chris Senseney and Stefanie Drootin-Senseney are a musician romance success story. Drootin, a member of The Good Life, who toured extensively with acts like Bright Eyes, She & Him and Azure Ray, was wooed one night by Senseney, a charming opening act guitarist. And you know what came next in this musician on musician love -- Big Harp.

Drawing on their respective indie-punk and country-folk roots, Big Harp made beautiful music together. They released their debut album, "White hat," on Saddle Creek with the help of Rilo Kiley bassist Pierre de Reeder at La's Nightingale Studios.

"Everybody Pays" was directed by Danny Drysdale, capturing the natural chemistry of the duo. "The video was made in much the same way as our record -- quick and dirty," Drootin-Senseney said. "Danny scouted while he drove down from Utah, we talked for a few hours, and then we drove up...

Mark Webber and Alison Pill Interview Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World
He’s the insecure lead singer, she’s the angsty drummer. Together, they are two thirds of the band Sex Bob-Omb in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Mark Webber plays Stephen Stills, Alison Pill is Kim Pine and while these rolls might make them household names, each already has quite the career going. Webber has appeared in films such as Good Dick, The Good Life, Broken Flowers, Hollywood Ending and Jesus’ Son and even wrote and directed a film called Explicit Ills with Rosario Dawson and Paul Dano. Pill was the lone female among Sean Penn’s friends in his Oscar winning film Milk and she also appeared in Dan in Real Life, Pieces of April, In Treatment and will soon appear in the Woody Allen film Midnight in Paris.

10 Most Underrated Young Actors
Cinema is filled with multi-talented young actors who bring to life all types of characters. Sometimes, a role is given to the wrong guy - just because he has the looks (pin-up pretty, looks awesome wearing trunks) and the connection (a powerful talent agent at his side). But when the role is given to the right guy - moviegoers get to witness something unique, memorable and powerful, even magical. Anyway, even the 'right guy' needs an agent, of course...

It could have been different if Tom Sturridge was retained to play Hayden's part. Anyway, who am I to argue? Christensen has more box office appeal than the relatively unknown Sturridge, but acting-wise?

Live from: 2007 Tremblant Film Festival
  • It usually serves as a ski hill during the crisper months and gives a green-friendly view of the stars above, but for the second year in a row, Mont Tremblant will best serve those who like the intimacy of screen, projector and film. A two hour-ish ride north of Montreal, the Tremblant Film Festival may just be another blimp on the film festival circuit map (we must be closing in on the 1,000 festival mark soon), but Park City’s French-Canadian cousin has the charm, the foreign culture thing, the lieu going for it and also brought along the sort of stars who don’t need a telescope to get a good eyeful. Ioncinema.com will be present to cover the fest. Opening this past Wednesday with the French comedy Michou d'Auber with Gérard Depardieu and Nathalie Baye and closing with Julie Delpy’s rom com 2 Days in Paris on Sunday night,

The Good Life (2007)
The Good Life
The Good Life (2007)
PARK CITY -- Films about misfit kids trying to escape the oppression of their small town are practically a cottage industry. Director Steve Berra, a skateboarding champion making his feature debut, tries to pump new life into the genre by pushing the alienation of his characters to an extreme. While The Good Life is stylistically ambitious and heartfelt, it feels more forced than authentic. But quirkiness of the film could find it an audience on cable outlets.

Berra's characters exist in a kind of mythical version of Lincoln, Nebraska, where people appear out of nowhere and say things like, "You don't know you know me." There are two sides to this town: the mass of fevered college football fans and the few alienated souls who don't have a clue. Berra brings two of the unlikely lost souls together.

The lead character is named Jason Prayer (Mark Webber), lest you miss what kind of state his life is in. He works pumping gas, trying to get by and support his mother, but the defining fact of his life is that he has no body hair, the result of an immune system malfunction. Although he wears a wig, he is a man set apart by his condition.

Jason's one pleasure in life is working at the Capitol theater, one of the last of the dying breed of neighborhood movie houses. While helping his friend Gus Harry Dean Stanton) show old movies such as The Harvey Girls, in walks Frances (Zooey Deschanel) like a shady character out of a film noir, who claims she was a childhood singer. The details of her life also bear a striking resemblance to those of Garland's. Frances and Jason are, of course, soul mates, destined to ride into the sunset together.

At this point, Berra could have cued The Animals singing I Got to Get Out of this Place, but he prefers more mournful strings and piano. Jason's life is a barrage of insults and defeats, the latest being the death of his despised father, who left his son with the message "Life is suffering and no one will ever love you." No wonder he's lost.

It's hard to know what to believe about Francis' stories of suicide, drugs and hospitization. Deschanel's big-hearted performance -- including a lovely rendition of On the Sunnyside of the Street -- makes the character appealing, if not quite convincing. What's clear is that she is a desperate character trying to cut her surprisingly close ties to the football culture in the worst way.

True to form, things go from bad to worse before they get better. The electricity is shut off at Jason's house, he gets beat up by the local thug and his beloved father figure Gus is losing his memory and barely recognizes him.

While it is impossible not to be moved by suffering like this, circumstances often seem more contrived than real. The Capitol theater, for instance, runs a repertory program that would make a New York movie house proud for an audience of two people night after night. And Jason's working class family comes off as the kind of one-dimensional people who exist only in movies, especially his over-the-top brother-in-law (Donal Logue).

Technically, The Good Life is an impressive first film for Berra. Patrice Lucien Cochet's photography suggests the magical atmosphere and gritty reality the director was apparently shooting for. And Gord Wilding's dead-on production design makes it clear why these people want out.
