Not brain surgery, but passes the time and OK for older kids
tripped-124 January 2009
To the others that have commented on this movie - chillax people! Why take everything so personally/seriously? If a movie actually makes you angry - then stop watching it and move on! Actors have to make a living too - not everything they do is going to be a masterpiece. (And insulting their looks just makes YOU look petty and stupid.)

That said, this movie was mildly entertaining, not offensive, and had a few chuckles. If, like me, you watch movies to be entertained (to step out of your own world for an hour or so), then this movie should do the trick. I wouldn't recommend spending a lot to see it - but then I'm of the opinion that very few movies are actually worth the current ticket prices.

Nothing too offensive
sitenoise9 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
A few chuckles, a little bit of plot, and some star power. I wish there'd been more Selma Blair on screen. I like her but ... her part could have been played by anybody.

It's kind of scary when Meg Ryan smiles (her face is a disaster, but her lips are freaky) but other than that she looks good and can still pull off her Megness like no one else. There are a couple scenes that are pure Meg. When Antonio is fawning over how hot she looks, she responds "Yeah! I know!" Only Meg could do that and not make everybody sick. In another scene she gets mad at him and throws a fit, punching and screaming into the air. Antonio just watches until its over and is speechless (so was I) but for a genuinely soft-spoken "Wow." It was nice to see those scenes. Meg's still got it and Antonia doesn't seem like he's going to lose it any time soon.

It was a pleasant surprise to see how good Antonio looks. Maybe I just haven't seen him in a while. I've always liked him in comedies. If you like Antonio, you'll love the scene where he ends up with each hand in a glass of water (or white wine?). Antonio could charm the socks off ... I dunno, somebody who really needed their socks.

That's what these kinds of movies are all about, right? How good do our stars look? How much we enjoy seeing our favorite celebrities prance about ... acting.

There's a light twist at the end so everybody can be happy. Upon reflection it explained a few unanswered hmmmm's from previous scenes but I didn't see it coming because I wasn't expecting it; I didn't need it and I had forgotten about those scenes because this isn't a movie you keep score on. That's cool.

Scraping the bottom of the barrel...
michael-320410 August 2008
I'm usually pretty forgiving when it comes to romantic comedies, especially those out of Hollywood. They often are borderline insipid, clichéd, predictable, and dull-witted, but those that aren't completely inept still manage to entertain to varying degrees. Unfortunately, "My Mom's New Boyfriend" falls way below the grade and fails even at being mildly amusing.

First, it isn't necessary for a movie like this to be smart or particularly realistic, but it should have some integrity so that we can actually believe in the characters. Here, in the prologue, we see Henry Durand (Colin Hanks), who clearly has a close relationship with his Mom, Marty (Meg Ryan), leaving home and Mom behind to start a job with the FBI. Flash forward three years, and Henry returns home -- apparently, without even once having visited or talked to his Mom in all that time. Now I'm sure the FBI requires a certain amount of secrecy, but it sure doesn't require its agents to cut off all communication with their nearest and dearest for three years. Right off the bat, the phoniness of the set-up sinks any chance at viewer empathy with any of the characters.

Second, the characters themselves are about the most unlikeable I can think of in any romantic comedy I've ever seen. I'd rather spend a weekend locked in a cell with Barbara Stone (Bette Midler's character in "Ruthless People") than 15 minutes with the insufferably egotistical, vapid Marty Durand. Ryan is just awful here, and I usually enjoy her performances. She badly overplays Marty's zany qualities with ticks and vocal histrionics that are way over-the-top, and she seems to have lost whatever limited gifts she had for physical comedy. Maybe the knife slipped and the surgeons cut something else out when they were redesigning her face. She looks like she's trying to look like Michelle Pfeiffer and failing miserably. It has to be the worst performance of her career, and probably the worst of the year. Hanks, perhaps trying to counterweight Ryan's annoying performance, is as lifeless as a paperweight. He glowers and scowls through the film. Neither Antonio Banderas nor Selma Blair have enough to do to make much of an impression, though Banderas manages at least to be somewhat charming through the muddle of the storyline. Actually, the only genuinely funny performance in the film is from Trevor Morgan, in a small part as a young stud Ryan dates.

The film piles bad jokes one on top of the other and beats to death what wasn't particularly funny the first time -- the Italian chef who pines for Marty, the FBI agents' jokes about how hot Marty supposedly is, etc. I guess it does this because it has nothing else to do. There's just nothing going on here, no romance, almost no comedy, certainly no suspense, and we lost logic in the first five minutes. The only thing that can recommend this movie is seeing the crack-up of a once gifted actress. There's a certain fascination in that, Ryan's performance is a slow-moving train wreck. I hope she gets it together and comes back in better form next time.

Stop!
jpschapira22 November 2008
It has to stop. Critics don't even go to the screenings of romantic comedies anymore. Doesn't anyone want to have a good time? Yes, most of the time a disaster is meant to happen because the industry has ran out of ideas and thus people have lost the faith in romantic comedies; but this isn't an excuse for writing reviews that sometimes indicate that critics may not have seen the film or that talk more about Meg Ryan's surgery than her performance.

"My mom's new boyfriend" stars Ryan as Marty, the mother of Henry (Colin Hanks), an FBI agent, and a woman who was once extremely fat but now when Henry comes back from a very long work trip, is completely unrecognizable. I don't know what surgeries everyone mention, but the woman Henry sees by the pool is very hot and I guess that's why a mysterious art thief (Antonio Banderas) falls for her.

I don't know why anyone would enter this film badly predisposed. Firstly, It has Meg Ryan, eternal queen of romantic comedies. Is she in a bad acting phase? Nonsense: watch "In the land of women" and "In the cut" and tell me if I'm wrong. Secondly, it has Antonio Banderas, whom I don't like but I prefer him laughing of himself and smiling rather than pretending to be serious. Here, the actor and actress have chemistry and if they were laughing of themselves it certainly made a positive effect.

What else? Colin Hanks, who showed his comedic chops in the excellent "Get over it" and in the very good "Orange County". And Selma Blair plays a delightful supporting role. Who dislikes Selma Blair? Am I selling this movie to you, by defending its participants? You bet I am. Take in consideration it's not a great movie (which romantic comedy is these days; I can accept that) and I knew nothing about its director George Gallo, who also wrote it.

Gallo seems to be a kind man. The chemistry between this 'unexpected cast' (take a good look again and you'll realize you would have never expected to see those four together) proves this; and his script, unoriginal and uncompromised, reaffirms it. The key word here is 'uncompromised', because "My mom's new boyfriend" doesn't break into new ground of the classic formulas or contains many laughable jokes (there were two or three times I truly laughed, though), but that's not where you should look.

Maybe it's too convenient, but it's as if Gallo knew that romantic comedies are taken less seriously these days, so he provides a direction that is not safe (that would be a disaster), which is what someone would do to secure a hit, but it's definitely pleasing. The thing is that Gallo makes it pleasing in the best form he could, with a fast-paced rhythm and a fun edition that accentuates it; a lineal storyline and a preoccupation for characters.

Don't be surprised if you identify with some of these beings. I'm sure you've seen them before but as complete stereotypes. "My mom's new boyfriend" is short, but in its duration finds time to construct its characters and establish their personalities by giving each one of them interesting things to say. Because I love romantic comedies I try to notice details, and I understand if by now you see me as someone not to trust when it comes to this genre. I've already learned to let myself go and forgive minimal trespasses in occasions; but I'm writing objectively, and I'm writing the truth.

"My mom's new boyfriend" is a good romantic comedy. Now tell me about the 'twist'…You couldn't have seen that one coming.

Completely charmless mess
intelearts9 May 2008
Just horrible, horrible, horrible.

We didn't laugh - not once.

Just about every scene is set up to deliver a flat joke.

Honestly, we LOVE comedies, but this was neither comedy, or romantic. The plot about the Mum (Meg Ryan) whose son is in the FBI (Colin Hanks - who here acts as though he has a large plank inserted right up him especially in his scenes with Selma Blair) - starts with Meg Ryan losing 200lbs of fugliness suddenly becomes beautiful wealthy vivacious and sexy, much to the son's embarrassment, is just tooo much. When a suspected wanted international art thief (Banderas) falls for her and the son is on the case the so-called fun begins. But it just ain't fun. At all. What ensues is a comedy of errors and misunderstandings that is just plain toe-curling embarrassing.

This is one of the weakest comedies it has ever been my immense discomfort to see - nothing shines - and the target audience is what? Women in their 40s? - I suggest anyone would be just plain insulted by the lack of anything construing the most basic brain food here - there ain't one smart line or original scene - it truly is neither comedy or romance.

The only positive is that this is totally harmless and won't offend, but it won't entertain either, it really is lobotomy food...

This is seriously one of the turkeys of the year and deserves to not only go straight to DVD but straight into the DVD bin...

Does no-one's careers (Especially Hanks) any favours ... avoid like the plague...especially if you're fans of any of the actors...this will be, I guarantee, one they want to forget in a hurry.

Glitters at few places
AvinashPatalay24 January 2012
"My Mom's New Boyfriend" has got what it takes, well nearly. It starts off on a very interesting note and builds up to a quite nice premise with adequate fresh gaffes sprinkled at regular intervals. Sadly it loses steam towards the end and becomes quite predictable. Meg Ryan is a big downer, she chugs and splutters all over the place. Antonio Banderas is smooth and suave, reprising his "Zorro" performance. Colin Hanks failed to deliver the goods thereby the movie doesn't quite register an impact. Selma Blair was merely a stocking filler. The climax portions seems to have been written by a 10-year old kid, very lame!

Verdict: Can pass off as a popcorn evening on a rainy day.

Enjoyable, at time a bit silly, nicely acted & made comedy..

Warning: Spoilers
This type movie was a staple on movie screens until about 30 or so years ago.

Antonio Bandares stars along with Meg Ryan. Think the likes of Cary Grant & Doris Day. In major support is Colin Hanks; think here of a young Jack Lemmon or Tom Hanks. (in fact Colin is Tom Hanks son). Selma Blair is the other romantic interest. Many talented actresses could have done this role.

In other words there is nothing in the script we haven't seen before.

The people are all to some degree very nice.

No actual sex scenes, we do see the couples in bed a few times, NO nudity, next to no violence & only one car crash, this is in a comic high speed chase type scene. We used to see this type film all the time.

This film runs a fast 97 minutes, they used to be about 85 shown as part of a double bill.

This nice charmer was not released to theatres,it went direct to DVD.

George Gallo wrote & direct this light charmer.

Rent this, its far more enjoyable than many others.

Meg Ryan's worst movie!
Tarafa-223 June 2008
i think this is the worst of Meg Ryan's movies, i'm really a big fan of her, she's one of the most gorgeous actress in Cinema, and she'll always be the queen of romantic comedy, and i liked most of her choices in the past, even the not so-good movies of her , she was able to make them worthy watching, but this film is just bad in every possible way?!

it's boring, not funny, flat and predictable . nothing in this movie is interesting nor original, it's not comedy, not romantic, not thriller and not action. i've never felt uninterested of completing watching a movie that Meg Ryan appears in before.

if you are Meg Ryan fans then i recommend to avoid this movie. if your not, then avoid this movie as well.

Embarrassing
tilki907 August 2008
What a cheap movie. I can't believe Meg Ryan's performance and Banderas' too. Meg Ryan's face became a female joker (Jack Nicholson's joker). She said she went to Tibet i read Kuran etc. and said she understood reason of life is a fun. What a stupid and cheap philosophy. This movie and movies like this movie say to people 'You are stupid and we have money from that'. Can I explain? . Morals are so bad too. Comedy is bad, drama is bad, performances are bad, story is too bad, disgusting director. This movie just spent my time and makes me angry. I wanna say too much things but my English is not good. greetings from turkey.

Cute movie
sudiniup12 October 2021
Fun & full of entertainment. As far as the horrible, mean opinions about Meg Ryan's appearance - OMG! Are you kidding me? She looked wonderful and sweet, the cancel culture of sick social media is everywhere.

Just watch the movie. Everyone does a good job. I say F you to the numb brained creeps that choose to be full of hate.

Hey! It was entertaining
brenda_grant4 June 2013
This is a nice entertaining movie, no great surprises, but pure entertaining. I don't know why people are so harsh! It was cute, like most of Meg Ryans movies. I don't know what people were expecting? I think they picked idea people for each roll. If you are looking to sit back and have a relaxing evening this is a good choice. If you are looking for a 007 or Bourne Supremacy action pact edge of your seat movie, then look elsewhere. Meg Ryan movies are like home made chicken soup, you are always left feeling good. I wish they didn't demand 10 lines for a review, I pretty much said it all. In Just A Few Lines. Good Heavens!

I'm sorry by this movie is a waste of time!
cesarpessoal14 August 2008
Pretty awful! Only flat jokes, the movie does not make any sense at all. And Meg Ryan was supposed to be the hottest girl ever? What was that all about? That bot-ox face and that flat chest will even fool anyone? Stupid movie, stupid scenes, as someone once said, stupid scenes transitions (like Windows Movie Maker)...

I could not laugh at all. I only waste my time and money watching this.... this... well... i think u got the idea.

Please go spend your money elsewhere.

Poor execution...

Two thumbs down!

It's a good laugh!
Gordon-1115 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This film is about a beautiful mother, whose son is in the FBI, falling in love with an international art thief.

Initially I found the sound effects that accompany scene changes annoying. After I decided to live with those effects, I found "My Mom's New Boyfriend" quite enjoyable. It is comedic to see Henry in such a difficult role with obvious conflict of interest. Colin Hanks is likable, and he handles his conflicted role well. It's not easy to act professional, embarrassed at the same time! The dramatic twist about Tommy in the end is quite unexpected. It feels a little contrived, but it provides the Hollywood ending that makes people feel good. I think it also serves as a satire towards the lack of communication between governmental agencies.

It's quite hard to believe Meg Ryan as a mother with such a grown up son though. Meg Ryan looks so young and beautiful, and she is so unconvincing as a mother. It's the only drawback of "My Mom's New Boyfriend", otherwise it gave me a good laugh.

Awful movie - Fell asleep
emelnik13 October 2008
What a crappy movie. Can't understand how Meg Ryan accepted to participate on it.

Haven't seen Meg Ryan and Antonio Banderas in good movies for the past...4 years I think.

Fell asleep 15 minutes after it started. I thought it was going to be funny, a good comedy but it turned out to be excessively dumb. No plot, no script, no sense.

By the way Meg Ryan's makeover went really bad. That angel face is gone, her face is so inexpressive now. The botox doesn't allow her to move her lips anymore. How sad.

Avoid this movie at all cost, it's an awful waste of money and time.

feel good family comedy with a bit of action
beregic27 June 2008
first things first: Colin Hanks, as well as his character Henry Durand should have not been part of this feature; the character is way to stereotypical,i kept having such thoughts as "what a moron!" throwout the whole movie; the "actor" is probably one of the worst i have seen lately. Antonio Banderas, Meg Ryan and Selma Blair do all the work and bring the real laughs, sympathy and charm. Colin Hanks is one of the worst miss-casts i have seen in some time, and because of that the movie suffers. there are many gigs that he is literally killing off, especially in the first part.besides some of his really stuck-up idiotic dialogs, his body language and delivery are absolutely abdominal(forced at best). the movie would had been way better without him! also his role here would had been best played by Owen Wilson, as first example that comes to mind.while i enjoyed George Gallo's "ok" direction, he should pay better attention to such as an important aspects. oh my...and beside that God forbid if there are any such FBI characters , even remotely close to reality.

few other positive/negative thoughts: the introductory scene gave me a bad first impression, i got afraid this would be some "b" rated feature. another dumb scene would be the one having 30 or so FBI agents briefed on a possible theft of a statue(30...heh...give me a break)but once passing the "fat" Meg Ryan and getting the "regular" sized one, things picked up for me))) she and Antonio Banderas are interesting and fun to watch , a whole different approach as compared with "the assassin". the plot is quiet lame, the heist makes no sense at all, but good enough to work for a "feel good" comedy in the end. there is even a "twist" that only makes matters worse as seen from a plot integrity aspect. the Albanian family is the funniest "gig" i think.

well my score would 6 and that mostly because Antonio Banderas is in great shape, even if comedies are not really his domain.Meg Ryan is good too but towards end her character has nothing original to offer, too stereotypical.

Weak and just not even remotely amusing
anthony_bennett17 August 2008
My wife and I regularly watch romantic comedy's as end of week, child in bed, brain wind down, light fluffy fare. That said, I do like some quality of acting or comedy, e.g. 4 Weddings, Music & Lyrics, Bridget Jones, Notting Hill, Love Actually (oh god... is High Grant the only person capable of a decent Rom-Com???), Sleepless in Seattle, You've got Mail, etc.

This movie was just bland, unfunny, and so poor that we turned it off half-way through. Not a chuckle, not even a smirk.

As many other reviews here have pointed out, the characters seem forced and just don't work together. It's not even that they are annoying... it just didn't 'work' for mine which is very disappointing as the individual actors have proved track records of quality films.

Avoid, or if you must watch it, be ruthless and promise to turn it off after 15-20 minutes if it doesn't really grab you.

More Entertaining Than You Think (watch credits until the end)
redbaron-8619222 November 2021
Nice film that is more enjoyable than you would think. Sure, a bit predictable and not over the top with comedy; but, watch as a couple and it's a nice way to spend an evening. You'll see some familiar character actors and you'll enjoy the behind the scenes piano playing by Eli Danker and Banderas dancing with Ryan. Not a blockbuster; but, not everything can be.

Everything (yes, every single thing) about this movie is annoying
crandlemire9 July 2008
About a third of the way through this terrible terrible film I started to look for at least one thing that I could identify as not annoying or not just plain stupid. I didn't find even a single thing. It didn't even end in a timely manner. Some of the dialog is so painfully bad it beggars explanation of how an actual human wrote it rather than a life-form or intelligence wholly ignorant of our kind. The scenes often transition using effects that remind me of a stupidly done youtube family vacation video made by the youngest spoiled kid using Windows Moviemaker.

Do not watch this movie please. The money spent on this production would have been better used investigating flaming poo bags.

Oh and they try to pass of Meg Ryan as The Hottest Milf The World Has Ever Seen. She looks like a mouse with two black eyes and a crack habit. Honestly. They even try to pass her off as artificially buxom. There's nothing there! This is just how dumb they think you, the viewer, is.

Cute Movie Under the Radar
shelbythuylinh29 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Colin Hanks is a young FBI agent who just got engaged and that he now has to deal with not just being away from home for three years. His future wife is an agent too.

But his overweight mother played by Meg Ryan as she has lost weight, got a pool over playing the stock market, and got several boyfriends.

But none compares to the boyfriend she will get Antonio Bandares as he is not whom he seems to be. As an art thief with a twist. As he wines and dines Meg's character.

Cute movie that was under the radar.

What on earth has Meg Ryan done to herself
lisafordeay25 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
So I caught this on a glimpse yesterday on TV as it featured one of my favourite actresses as a kid Meg Ryan. Now Meg Ryan is known for starring in A lot of romantic comedies giving her the title of Queen of the Chick Flicks. Some of them were very good more were kinda on the average side. I liked her in the likes of Sleepless In Seattle,You've Got Mail and yes folks I loved Kate & Leopold too. But since then she underwent plastic surgery and by god does it really show in this unfunny movie.

She plays Marty a woman who's son(played by her bff 's son Colin Hanks who is Tom Hanks son btw) happens to be working for the CIA but of course she meets a handsome man named Tommy (played by Puss In Boots and Zorro himself Antonio Banderas) who is stealing a valuable statue in an Art gallery and its up to Ryan's charcther's son to stop him. But is Antonio really a bad guy or is he an undercover cop working for the CIA?

Bottom line this film was pretty bad. The movie wasn't even funny and poor Meg Ryan she used to be so pretty and now she's like The Joker from Batman(no offense but she is like the villain in the Batman movies).Overall this isn't worth watching and if you are like me a fan of Meg Ryan's then watch her old stuff its way better.

Meg is charming, Antonio is eye-candy, and Colin is adorable!
punzelle9 January 2011
If you love Meg Ryan, there are many things to enjoy and appreciate about this film: seeing Meg at the beginning in a very realistic fat-suit -- so funny! She plays it very well, and we are all so happy to see her slender again after she 'loses' it all and becomes her real svelte self for the rest of the story. Her son's reaction to his 'new' mom, after not having seen her for a long time, including her new 'hip' outlook on life is a riot. It's fun (after the romantic roles Meg and Tom have shared) to see Tom Hanks's talented son, Colin, playing Meg's on-screen son, too! - Okay, on to Antonio Banderas: he's never been more handsome or sexier than he is now, and he pairs perfectly with Meg. - There are some very funny comedic moments, with conservative Colin as the straight guy, too. -- One negative thing, however comical it was meant to be, though, was the merciless teasing and sexual innuendo directed toward Colin's character when his FBI job forces him to conduct surveillance on his own mother, even while she was becoming romantically involved with Antonio's character; suggested incestuous feelings just don't sit right with me, and many others, I would imagine, so that type of humor is lost on me. But the film is worth it all for the great acting, including Selma Blair as Colin's fiancée.

The family of two cops and a thief and a super hot mom!
Reno-Rangan24 October 2016
Basically, this film was nothing, just a timepass flick. Of course it has a story, though easily predictable. The actors were okay, but it was their roles which were not challenging enough. There are no good comedies, all were so plain or maybe already seen in different films. So this is one of those comes and goes kind, I mean not to stay in anybody's hit list.

The son who is working in the FBI returns to his mom's with his fiancé who works with him to stay for a while. One day while they all were out, the mom meets a stranger and instantly they two start to see each other. But what they don't know is the man's an art thief and planning for a big heist. So within them, two cops and a thief, how the events turn out, especially how it affect their romance was told in the remaining part.

I have not seen Meg Ryan for a long time, though this is nearly a decade old film that I watched now. All I'm familiar with is the beautiful Meg from the 1990s romantic comedies. She looks quite the same, but not impressed with her performance. The others like Antonio Banderas was not bad, including Colin Hanks and Selma Blair. It could entertain those who watch films occasionally. But for a film fanatic like me it is completely boring, because the common line everyone of us say is 'I'd seen a better one'. So it is okay for a few people, but not for everyone.

Plain AWFUL!
g.barlas28 October 2008
Just awful....... It doesn't make any sense at all...... It is not a comedy, not a thriller, not a caper movie... It is just nothing.... Why on earth do they make such stupid, inane movies??? I haven't any good or say, better, movies the two leads act in.. It is high time that ms Ryan cuts her hair, brush it and give it a good wash... She looks awful! Senor Banderas! Time to pack up and go back to Spain.. perhaps Pedro Almadovar will help you to rescue what's left of your once promising career.... I am glad I haven't paid any cent for this sordid affair... I wonder whether it has made any cent at all???? It puzzles me to read the few favorable lines on this film... I can not find one good thing in it... Just awful.....
