Pilot episode: Funny of course but also interesting to see the improvement made between this and season 1 proper

Howard Moon and Vince Noir are keepers at the Zoo-niverse but are not happy with their lot – particularly when new employee Dixon Bainbridge is immediately put on a pedestal by owner Bob Fossil due to his adventures and impressive moustache. Keen to show he is more than a match for Bainbridge, Howard takes Vince on a dangerous mission to be the first to recover a mysterious jewel deep in the frozen tundra of the Artic.

Those who have already seen season one of The Mighty Boosh (and this is nearly everyone who will be watching this pilot) will have seen the "proper" version of Tundra as it was done again as episode four. In many regards the pilot is very similar to episode four with the plot being more or less the same and many of the scenes being identical. It goes without saying that it is funny and fans of The Boosh will enjoy it nearly as much as the "proper" version.

Given that we already have a better version of this episode, what actually makes it worth seeing are the differences that don't work as opposed to the similarities that do. This includes the canned laughter – which never once seems like a good idea throughout the whole pilot episode and I am so glad that it was dropped. The other changes are in the characters and again all the changes made from the pilot are good. Naboo is too marginal, Fossil is not crazy enough and Bainbridge is not "big" enough. Actually on the last one, Ayoade was meant to do Bainbridge but a conflict with his contract with Channel 4 prevented him from doing so – fortunately from my point of view since Berry was much better at the same material.

Overall then a typically entertaining episode of Boosh but of course not as good as the series one version of the same episode and the main value is seeing how they improved upon it between the pilot and season one proper.
