4th Grade is an important episode. It introduces the character of Miss Chokesondik & has Garrison finally coming out of the closet. It is fairly funny, though not the greatest episode ever. It's about the boys who find that fourth grade is much harder than third grade with Mr.Garrison.Cartman then makes everybody remember how great third grade was. They realize this and ask two college nerds to build them a time machine with Timmy's wheelchair. They do however the plan backfires and Timmy ends up going back in time by himself.Meanwhile, the new teacher decides to find Mr.Garrison who went missing so she can learn how to teach her students. This is a funny and good episode which has some important moments.

A laugh-a-minute type episode, one of my favourites so far in the series and also an important moment in the show

Warning: Spoilers
I'm a first time South Park viewer who has been making his way through the series from the pilot onwards and while I've grown very fond to the vast array of characters in this town, it's the quality of the episodes themselves that have often disappointed me. For every great episode, there's been too many episodes for my liking that haven't measured up. With that said, "4th Grade" has the distinction of being one of a handful of episodes that have entertained me as much as this episode did.

The intro to this episode promises a change of pace to the show and surprisingly, the episode follows through on this promise. Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny are now in the 4th Grade! Wow, I did not see that coming especially having been a long time fan of The Simpsons where Bart and friends have been stuck in the fourth grade for the past quarter of a century and beyond.

As much as I absolutely adore this episode, I wonder if it should have been a season premiere (fifth season) especially given Mr. Garrison's fate at the beginning of the episode. The staff of South Park Elementary keep quiet about Mr. Garrison who had a nervous breakdown following his successful tenure as an adult erotica author. That idea alone seems to warrant the episode being a better fit for a season opener. As it stands, it does come off as one of the slightly choppy aspects of this episode.

With that said, Mr. Garrison's story here is absolutely hilarious and makes way for a number of hilarious pop culture references, nothing more brilliant than his impersonation of Yoda's "You will be" from Empire Strikes Back, only for the punchline to be that Garrison hadn't cleared his throat. That one had me rolling!

The kids story is excellent too and the episode introduces two young-adult nerds who act in a typically childish manner. When the students come to resent their time in the fourth grade and their new teacher, Cartman illustrates to everyone how wonderful the third grade was in a montage that is as fantastic as it is hilarious. It's so amusing to see an alternate take by the boys on their experiences in third grade where it is suddenly painted in the most retro positive light.

The two nerds are fantastic and their attempts at creating a wormhole through which the children can land back in third grade yields some unforgettable comedy. The Star Trek Original Series and Battlestar Galactica debates are obvious but brilliant.

I absolutely adore this episode. It's laugh after laugh and seems to further the plot in many ways. I'm not sure whether the kids would fall back to third grade eventually or not but it's an important stepping stone in the series nevertheless. Then there's also Garrison, finally coming to terms with his homosexuality, and that's both touching and hilarious. I cannot wait to see what Parker & Stone do next with the character.
