Great ending
drichardson798 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Not a great episode, both Joel and Ed are too annoying. But it's a great ending. Ruth-Anne turns 75 and Ed, fixated with her age, gives her a belated party and present, her own plot of land for her funeral.

Ruth-Anne, appearing grateful, asks what they should do now after seeing her present. She says she'd like to dance, on her grave. "Seems like a great opportunity".

This episode aired on 18 nov 1991. Margaret "Peg" Philips was born on 20 Sep 1918. She would have been 73 (2 years younger than her on-screen persona). She died in 2002 at the age of 84.

Some Very Touching Moments
Hitchcoc13 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
When O'Connel comes back with a deer she has shot, he gets all indignant. He is accusatory but she counters with the idea that he is constantly standing in judgment of things he knows nothing about. He has never hunted, so how can he get so worked up. When Holling and Chris go on a grouse hunting trip, Joel invites himself along. He reaches a point where a sort of fanaticism settles in. When he just wings a bird but doesn't kill it, all his angst comes back. In a second plot, Ruth Anne has just turned 75 and doesn't let anyone know. Ed suddenly becomes aware of how little time she has left and begins to fawn all over her. But at some point he is made to realize that we are only as old as we feel. The final scene is wonderful.

Warning: Spoilers
Ed learns that RuthAnn just turned 75 and didn't even celebrate. He becomes obsessed with her age and worried she might drop dead. He treats her as such and drives RurhAnn crazy. Joel goes on a hunting trip with Chris and. Holling. He shoots a bird, but he ends up wounding it instead of killing it. So he rushes it back to his medical office and desperately (but unsuccessfully tries to save it. Ed throws RuthAnn a belated birthday bash and gifts her a jar of dirt. The next day he takes her to the rest of his gift, a gravesite with a majestic view. RuthAnn is thrilled. She asks Ed to dance with her (right there on her own gravesite) and adds "It's the opportunity of a lifetime, wouldn't you say?"
