Episode number two: "Crocodile".
Hey_Sweden9 July 2013
In this agreeable second episode of the series, writer Clyde Phillips and director Michael Cuesta juggle a couple of subplots while keeping us up to date on the activities of Dexter Morgan. Dexter enjoys a period of quiet before figuring out who his next victim will be: Matt Chambers (Sam Trammell), an alcoholic who'd killed a young man while driving drunk. Debra gets the assignment to Homicide that she'd been hoping for. A detective is found dead, and when Doakes and LaGuerta go to inform his wife, it turns out she'd been attacked as well. And the other killer in town, the Ice Truck driver, continues to taunt the cops and play sick games with Dexter that of course our hero actually finds irresistible.

This concept remains great fun in a darkly humorous sort of way. There's also some poignancy in the way that Dexter and Rita realize that sex is a stumbling block in their relationship; Dexter remains sensitive to her feelings. The actors are all great as usual, and get a chance to flesh out their characters a little more. For one thing, we learn a little more about Doakes. The guest stars are likewise enjoyable: Geoff Pierson as Police Captain Matthews, Rudolf Martin as drug kingpin Carlos Guerrero, Cristos as his henchman Norberto Cervantez, and C.S. Lee as Vince Masuka.

There's still a lot of pleasure in watching a character like Dexter go about his work as he eliminates human vermin from the face of the Earth. All in all, this is another good story.

Eight out of 10.

Crocodile Tears and Sick Games
claudio_carvalho20 February 2009
Debra locates the refrigerated truck with the frozen finger tips of the last victim of the unknown serial-killer, who continues to play sick games with Dexter, and she is promoted to homicide detective by Captain Tom Matthews. Meanwhile an undercover detective that is infiltrated in the local mafia is found dead. When Sergeant James Doakes and Lt. Maria Laguerta go to his home to tell the news to the widow, they find her lethally wounded by two shots. Dexter interests by a case of an alcoholic driver that killed a teenager from Harvard and is considered not guilty in the court.

"Crocodile" is another great episode of this promising series. The "damaged relationship" of Dexter and Rita Bennett is of a total black humor. Who is the serial-killer is the great question in this moment. Angel Batista might be the unknown killer, who knows? My vote is eight.

See you later, alligator

Warning: Spoilers
Dexter is bothered when he found in his fridge a Barbie-like doll that was cut in small pieces. He realizes there might be someone that is into his activities outside the work he does for the Miami police. Being taught by his late father, a police officer, in how to pay attention to details, he figures he has not done anything that might have attracted undue curiosity about his person.

He happens to be in a courtroom testifying in the case of a hit an run that has left an innocent victim. He knows the man being acquitted is guilty. That will consume him for a while, knowing this man will be his next project. This man will be Dexter's next project.

In the meantime, Dexter is surprised when he spots the refrigerated truck he sees parked near the restaurant where he is eating with his sister. As it turns out it is the one that served as the setting for the murder of the prostitute. In addition to that, a well known criminal, Norberto Cervantes, who works for the criminal, Carlos Guerrero, is found with a missing piece of flesh on his arm that ties him as the killer of the unfortunate woman.

Debra Morgan emerges as the next star in the police force. Because of her brother's work, she is credited with the finding that leads the police into arresting Cervantes. Even Laguerta, and Sgt. Doakes, who hates the Morgans, seem to be quite impressed with their work.

Dexter, alas, is not successful in getting anywhere with Rita. She is willing in trying to let him make love to her, but there is a mental block that deters her from letting Dexter get beyond kissing.

Another good episode in the series. Directed by Michael Cuesta, the chapter was written by Clyde Phillips. The show works because even though we realize there is criminal at work, he is on our side because his victims have it coming to them. Michael C. Hall is the best reason for tuning into this program. The supporting cast does an excellent job.

Off and running

Warning: Spoilers
Plot; Dexter pursues a serial drunk driver who has left a trail of victims behind him all the while the game of cat and mouse between he and the serial killer at large continues.

Episode nicely keeps a lot of balls in the air at once. Dexter pursues the episode's "victim" (though I use that term loosely), there's a case which he's a part of that has ties to various members of the department, he and his Sister deal w/ domestic and professional issues and oh by the way the serial killer at large strikes again. It's a lot of story for an hour long TV episode, but it's deftly handled with everything getting just the attention it needs. Performances are strong across the board. Two episodes in and I'm hooked.

One of the most underrated episodes of the series
aidanratesmovies5 July 2020
Entertaining, exciting, and well acted as always- this episode is the most underrated of the season, and one of the most underrated of the series. I'm really shocked to see it as a lower episode of the show, and hope that in time the reviews will improve. The growth and foreshadowing in this episode is fantastic.

Crocodile Rock!
g-bodyl13 August 2013
The second episode in this series, "Crocodile", is a high-quality one. It brings the level of high energy from the pilot and transfers it here nicely. The voice over narration by Dexter is still chilling and beholding. There are several subplots here to keep us hooked and all-in-all, it reaches the quality of the pilot story-wise and acting-wise.

This episode is about Dexter who has been contacted personally by a serial murderer and is playing head games with him. Meanwhile, his sister is promoted to Homicide, Dexter has a problem with Matt Chambers who killed someone drinking and driving, and a cop has been killed by a drug lord.

Overall, this is a great episode that will keep you hooked. This is an interesting series and I like how they play these shows out. This is high-quality television right here. I rate this episode 9/10.

Dexter: I can kill a man, dismember his body, and be home in time for Letterman. But knowing what to say when my girlfriend's feeling insecure... I'm totally lost.

Warning: Spoilers
Deb swings by to Dex's to have a brother sister chat. Deb picks up two ties and puts them in front of Dex's face. "This one brings out your eyes", showing us her cute smile and a different side of Deb.

Some really good Dex/Rita moments in this. On the double date, Rita is feeling insecure because Deb and her boyfriend are all over each other. Dex monologues while looking at Rita and the space between them in openness, and she gives him a quick smile. Also the elephant in the room scene is terrific.

A really good follow up episode to the series opener. Consistent level of quality with characters and dialogue regardless of the plot.

Good, fun episode, not quite the masterwork of the pilot
chillwill9221 February 2011
Dexter's second episode, "Crocodile" is a good continuation on from "Dexter", fleshing out the characters more and providing more insight into Dexter's past. One thing I forgot to mention in my pilot review is how BRILLIANT James Remar is as Dexter's deceased surrogate father, Harry. As the one who taught Dexter how to survive with his murderous urges, Harry is a critical character despite his death. Remar makes him the moral center of the show, supplying the reasons behind Dexter's MO. The Ice Truck Killer story continues, but no clues as to who it is yet. I was going to give this a 7, but the brilliant flashback scenes, as well as the perfectly staged (as always) kill room scene, pushes this up to an 8.

I try not to bother with the summary...
dannylee-780828 December 2021
But Dexter is already a likable character by episode 2. While he is a serial killer, the writers did an incredible job making him a likable one. I think the monologues help because it helps the audience understand his inner thoughts which are sometimes vulnerable and borderline funny. His existence is also justified by the fact that he only kills certain targets like most serial killers do. But this time, his criteria is justice instead of gender or hair color.

I have a feeling I will get hooked to this soon...

Warning: Spoilers
A perfectly good continuation of the previous episode, I do still wonder how nobody suspects him of anything he doesn't exactly try to hide his face when going on information searches. And yet everyone even his sister who has known him the longest, everyone besides one thinks he's perfectly normal.

Stay focused, Dex!
Coventry14 October 2007
Only the second entry in the "Dexter" TV-show and the concept already slightly begins to weaken. There's less blood & excitement in episode two then there was in the pilot, but also the story lines start to revert to clichéd situations and the characters already start to develop towards typical cop stereotypes. The entire Miami police department is still after the Ice Truck serial killer, but he hasn't made any new moves apart from secretly contacting Dexter and challenging him to a showdown. There are two supplementary (and seemingly forced) sub plots in the second episode, namely the murder investigation of an undercover police officer and Dexter himself digging deeper into the trial of a recidivist hit-and-run felon. Completely opposite to the events in the pilot, where the camera deliberately zoomed in on the gory set pieces, the blood & splatter sequences now seem rushed and limited. The dialogs and interactions between the characters become funnier ("glad to see that sexual harassment seminar paid off") but Dexter's narrative thoughts & impressions are still whiny and a little dull to endure. If you speak Spanish, you can probably also predict the future character developments (like that of Officer Angel Batista) but I had no idea what he and the lieutenant were saying. James Remar is more clearly visible in this second episode, as Dexter also continues to have extended flashbacks about his adolescence. I hope the next installments will get much better, or at least equal the quality level of the pilot again.

Nothing a New City Can't Cure [8.6/10]
panagiotis19938 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
My Reaction / Review for Dexter Season 1 Episode 2 ''Crocodile'' (S1. E2): Episode 1 was awesome and I gave it a rating of 9/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. A double date for Dexter and Debra, I don't know if that's a good idea. So they found the ice truck but not the killer. Also we have another little gift from the killer to Dexter, I cant wait for Dex to meet the ice truck killer. Doakes seems to always be angry with someone. Dex found his next victim. Deb and her boyfriend are a bit rude, kissing like that infront of Dex and Rita. Im happy for Deb's promotion. I wish the kills were a bit more brutal but still they are satisfying. And the episode ends with a great cliffhanger. Overall a really good episode, my rating is 8.6/10.

The cold kills
AvionPrince162 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The play with the killer and Dexter continue and they found the ice truck and find some fingers in it. Dexter clearly understand that the killer want to play with him. We follow also Deb and her new relationship who will end pretty suddenly. We see also Dexter and his girlfriend have sex issues and cant really make it. We follow also a case where a flic died.

The episode is still pretty enjoyable and the link we have with Dexter is still pretty interesting and to know his toughts during Deb talking or Laguerta make us more implied too. I enjoyed the Show and like also the flashback and we see also how Dexter's father helped him and make us more understand the character behind it.

I forgot how all Dexter episodes tend to just mash together
jpapanone5 March 2021
I'm not saying that's a good thing or a bad thing. I just can't really distinguish between episodes...and unless one is a LOT better or a LOT worse...they just seem to all be better than average mediocre episodes.

This episode is exactly that. Not great...not bad...just fine. That seems to be the thing. Bc the episodes aren't particularly memorable...there's no reason to watch again. I never really go...ooh...I want to see episode xyz again. It was so good.

They're all just sort of copy and paste. Dexter seems more like a really really really long movie or mini series as opposed to seasons of episodes.
