Yes, this story is more than influenced by the great born German writer Erich Maria Remarque. Especially the very ending shot: remember ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT last seconds. This is definitely a tale against war, and denouncing stupid struggle between men of all kinds. I appreciated this two men story, with a not so predictable ending; after all our leads could have splited and go away on their own.

It's certainly true about Dick Powell in the sense that he saved all the best stories in his various anthology series. This Zane Grey Theater story has a cast of two, Powell and Don Taylor as respectively a Confederate and a Union soldier on picket duty and facing each other on some forgotten outposts in the Civil War.
It's getting kind of cold and the two have the same idea at the exact same time. Make for a mountain cabin a bit up and away from both. When they're finally together they agree to a personal truce.
Snowfall makes it look like they'll be stuck there a spell so the two argue out the problems of what led to this war. Listening to some of the dialog neither one mentions slavery. Still the points both raise have validity. They even hammer out a peace treaty.
All I can say is sad neither one was in the councils of government on either side. Maybe at these conferences representatives of the fighting forces should be there. Even now.
With certain errors in the script Powell and Taylor deliver some first rate performances. And James Whitmore gives a first rate narration.

Was hoping for a unique story but was disappointed.

This is one of those scripts that after watching just a few minutes your pretty sure how the story will end. And as you sit and watch you hope, beyond hope, that the writer will throw some sort of twist into the ending. But in this tale we are left with a predictable ending that was seen at the beginning of the show.
It involves two Civil War soldiers, one being from the North and the other from the South. They are solo guarding a post on each side of the battlefront and suppose to report any movement of the enemy. When it becomes bitter cold and begins snowing they both find themselves entering an abandon shack for shelter. During their time together they think of an easy way to end the conflict between each side. And it all hinges on the two getting back to their Generals with the plan.
Because of the situation, there is much dialog and little action throughout the episode. And when the time for the climax to arrive, we have already guessed what is going to occur and bring an end to the show. And right on time, the show ends as expected. Just was not that entertaining of a tale.
