In 1968, friends Kevin Arnold, Paul Pfeiffer, and Winnie Cooper attend the newly renamed Robert F Kennedy Junior High for the first time. On the first day, Kevin gets into trouble for throwing an apple in the cafeteria. On the way home from the principal's office with his parents, Kevin finds out that Winnie's older brother was killed in Vietnam shortly after being drafted for the war. While Kevin tries to console Winnie about her brother's death, they kiss for the first time.
