Marquis Philippe de La Mer
- Marquis Philippe de La Mer: You implied I was not practical?
- James T. West: I didn't say that. I said that you're cracked.
- [Marquis slaps West in the face]
- Marquis Philippe de La Mer: You disappoint me. I thought you were more than one of those dull, regimented little minds which overpopulate the world. You are not a man of vision, Mr. West. Tell me. Why a country cannot be made out of water? Why someday, man cannot harvest the oceans and move and live beneath its waves? Some countries are made of land. Some partly land, partly water. Mine will be the first water-based country. La Mer. Formally known as the Pacific Ocean.
- James T. West: I can't see our country turning over its entire navy and merchant fleet to you.
- Marquis Philippe de La Mer: Then my sea dragons will sink everything afloat.
- James T. West: I've seen what your dragons can do. Release me, and I'll make every effort to have our president negotiate for a permanent place for La Mer.
- Marquis Philippe de La Mer: Even if you were serious, Mr. West, it's much too early for that. When the SS Virginia is blown to the bottom, then you might perhaps negotiate for us.
- James T. West: The Virginia's a man-o-war loaded with explosives. The entire crew may go down.
- Marquis Philippe de La Mer: An even better moral for President Grant and his cabinet who draw for my dragons. *You* and Admiral Fargett will make an absolutely superb negotiating team. Dominique, we have to start wasting time retrieving the compact from Mr. Gordon. Come along. All right.
- [Dominique turns on a device]
- James T. West: That's quite a nightlight.
- Marquis Philippe de La Mer: A disintegrating force field. You know I love light gadgets.
- James T. West: Interesting. What do you feed it?
- Marquis Philippe de La Mer: Oh, almost anything. Wood, for instance.
- [shoves a chair into the force field. Part of the chair's legs burn off]
- Marquis Philippe de La Mer: Even government agents, Mr. West.
- Marquis Philippe de La Mer: [West is looking at a dragon-like creation of the Marquis] Something bothering you, West?
- James T. West: No. I'm just appreciating.
