"Hello, Ms. Chips" is a title that brings to mind the 1939 British title about a retired teacher, "Goodbye, Mr. Chips." Valerie Curtin, actress and sometime screenwriter, is a fine choice for substitute teacher Ms. Wright, whose latest assignment is the remedial academics class, but she has studied a book about Kotter's old schoolmate Bonzo Maretti: 'There Are No Bad Boys, So Please Don't Shoot!" Kotter tells her about the toughest kid in his class, Benito Bloomberg: "voted most likely to invade Poland!" Obviously she's never seen anything like the Sweathogs, especially Juan Epstein: "does what to whom, don't touch me!" After two shots at the Sweathogs she's ready to quit, but Washington has the best line about her suggestion that she's a lousy teacher: "it's only because we lousy students, and we can't quit!" Just being herself is the answer, bringing up President James Buchanan, such a terrible President that their school was named for him! Helaine Lembeck appears briefly in her role as Judy Borden.
