In the opening scene one of the prisoners on the bus has a cross on a chain around his neck,. which he uses to unlock his hand cuffs. Prisoners are never allowed to have necklaces and jewelry, for that reason and because they can be used as weapons. Also, he is then shown taking a knife out of his prison uniform pocket. He would have been patted down and searched before getting on the prison bus.
