    strife at its worst

Barry sullivan loved to play villains because he was so adept at it and roberta shore played the spoiled rich girl to perfection yet neither had act in this episode ... lee j cobb and james drury were the strength of this series cast and it is evident why in this episode ... along with the loyal hands gary clarke and doug mcclure manage to upset the outlaws tom reese and robert sampson's plans to extort money from the judge

    Some Unexpected Arrivals

In this 2nd Virginian episode we learn some of the history of Judge Garth when he arrived in Wyoming Territory. Some unexpected arrivals one of whom has long ago history with Lee J. Cobb upset Cobb quite a bit.

Barry Sullivan is one of the arrivals and hewith two others has busted outof a Texas prison. Sullvancame west with Cobb and he fell ill. Cobb took Sullican's pregnant wife ahead to find shelter and came back for Sullican who was not where Cobb left him.

As for Sullivan he has some special revenge planned for Cobb.

This episode is a good one as we learn of some of the early history of Judge Garth before he became a cattle baron.

    Woman from White Wing

Frank Dawson, a friend from Judge Garth's past reappears out of nowhere, and accuses him of stealing his pregnant wife and abandoning him in the desert. But the Judge says that it isn't the case - he had returned to the spot he'd left him but he'd disappeared, and even afterwards he never gave up looking for him. Frank Dawson, heavily consumed with jealousy, doesn't believe this and is determined to ruin the Judge and take away his most prized possession: the Judge's daughter- Betsy! How? By telling her the truth!

To find out the truth you have to watch this gripping episode which features number one performances all around, especially by the two powerhouses that are Lee J Cobb and Barry Sullivan - they really bring their characters to life. There's a lot of suspense, too. Nice nail-biting finish.

    A haunting past

The Virginian continued its string of outstanding guest stars with the appearance of Barry Sullivan. Here Sullivan plays an old, old friend of Judge Garth, and bears a grudge for a tragedy which occurred as they came west. In fact, he could well have been Garth's partner in all the Judge achieved at Shiloh.

As with the first episode, he and two friends ... all recently released convicts ... don't make their intentions clear for a long while, but their creepy presence sets everyone on edge.

The Virginian started to pick up younger fans when Encore Westerns put it on their daily schedule thirteen years ago, and now it's apparently streaming and picking up even more recent attention. I'm glad to see that, as it's an excellent series.

    • Trivia
The first two Senators from Wyoming were Francis E. Warren and Joseph M. Carey. Both were first elected in 1890 four months after Wyoming entered the Union. Warren stepped down from office in 1893. Warren had been the first Governor of Wyoming until becoming a Senator (he was the territorial Governor prior to statehood). He was the last Civil War veteran to serve in the US Senate, and a medal of honor recipient from his actions during the war. He returned to the Senate in 1895 by beating Carey for his seat. Warren served in the Senate until his death at age 85 in 1929. Carey only served one term, but became the 8th Governor of Wyoming in 1911 where he again served one term.

When the Judge is talking to Betsy at her bed there is a very 1950's/1960's blanket with a satin edging on her bed pulled to her chin. He tells her a story about a woodsman finding a pool of water that was the fountain of youth.
