Despite the fact that Anne Francis' "mannequin" at the very end is shown in an extreme close-up during the final shot and looks remarkably life-like (right down to her realistic eyes), Miss Francis stated in the DVD commentary that it was a "death mask" fashioned of plaster which was made directly from her face and carefully painted to look like the actress standing there completely motionless.
One of four The Twilight Zone (1959) episodes to include an eye, not a spiral, at the introduction. The other three are Mr. Bevis (1960), A World of His Own (1960), and The Mighty Casey (1960).
This episode owes a lot to the story "Evening Primrose" by sometime Twilight Zonr contributor John Collier. Collier's tale appeared as a teleplay several years later on ABC, starring Anthony Perkins.
Does not have the classic four-note theme at the beginning.
In 1951, John Collier published "Evening Primrose" a short story in the collection "Fancies and Goodnights", which in 1966 was adapted by ABC. There are great similarities in the plot that address the theme of people who are living mannequins in a parallel dimension in stores.
