A poor tale from the crypt.

Tales from the Crypt: The Pit starts as boxing promoter Augusto King (Rick Garcia) is trying to figure out what is going to be the next 'big thing', he then sees Felix Johnson (Mark Dacascos) & his rival Aaron Scott (Stoney Jackson) in the ring fighting under 'Malaysian Rules' where basically anything goes. King senses an opportunity to makes millions on pay-per-view with such a fight, now all he has to do is convince the participants to take part...

This Tales from the Crypt story was episode 7 from season 6, written & directed by John Harrison I thought The Pit was another disappointing episode from season 6. The script was based on a story from 'The Vault of Horror' comic book & given the title I was expecting something creepy about a sinister pit, obviously. However what we have here is yet another Tales from the Crypt which just doesn't feel like horror, here it all revolves around a couple of fighters & their annoying wives & it it ends in a predictable fashion which I wouldn't even particularly call a twist. There are some fights here so it ends up feeling like a cheap action film rather than a tale from the crypt, this one takes itself far too seriously as well.

This one doesn't look the best, there's just no atmosphere in the sets anymore & it feels a bit cheap & tacky. There's no scares, no tension & definitely no gore here either. The acting was alright.

The Pit could have been good if it had been about a deep, dark pit, unfortunately it's a boring story about a fighting contest so it isn't.

Sort of like reality TV, but even better

Felix Johnson and Aaron Scott are two martial artists that are very acclaimed. Unfortunately one night their match is a blow and they talk about in a TV show. Now their respective wives Aubrey and Andera despise each other and the TV show host proposes to Felix and Aaron to do a no-holds barred that has to be aired on live TV in which one of the two has to die at the end. The two hatch a plan and make their wives encounter, fight and go in the televised arena (with cameras that record the scene) and the event is aired on TV like if they were fighting Felix and Aaron.

While it's not an horror episode it was great and the more the episode progressed, the more I loved it because of the situation and the newscaster's comments. Not to miss.

Enjoyable non-horror episode

Weary ace martial art steel cage brawlers Felix Johnson (the excellent Mark Dacascos) and Aaron Scott (the equally fine Stoney Jackson) trick their selfish and manipulative trophy babe wives Aubrey (a sublimely bitchy portrayal by Debbe Dunning) and Andrea (a perfectly tart performance by Marjean Holden) into fighting each other in the ring. Writer/director John Harrison relates the cool story at a constant snappy pace, delivers an amusing sense of spot-on sassy humor (the shrewish antics of the two conniving wives are quite funny and entertaining), stages the fights with genuine rip-snorting gusto (the climactic no-holds-barred confrontation between the two gals is an absolute brutal pip), and brings a real stylish flair to the material. Dacascos and Jackson display a solid and utterly engaging chemistry while Wayne Newton has a field day as sleazy and shameless promoter Wink Barnum. Rick Bota's slick cinematography provides an impressive glossy look. A fun show.

Put the trophy witches to work to fight the feud!

This "Tales From the Crypt" episode from season 6 titled "The Pit" happens to be one of my favorites from that season. As it has a very good and rightfully done twist that proves turnabout is fair and that what is right for one gender is fair for the other. The plot centers around the world of ultimate fighting with two brawlers(Mark Dacascos and Stoney Jackson)who have just recently been beating the bloody flesh off of one another. Yet their lives and careers are ran by gold digging and trophy witch type attractive wives(Marjean Holden and the pretty and attractive Debbe Dunning TV's tool time girl(Home Improvement) and "Silk Stalkings" guest star). Enter a guest appearance by entertainer Wayne Newton who has a plan forming for a big pay per view steel cage death match, but wait a secret twist was not told to the nagging trophy witches when the contract was signed. As it will turn out these bitter sexy trophy witches will do the bitter brawling in the ring! Overall great episode that twist with a rightfully and well deserved ending showing it was only fair that the females get their feet wet and do the fighting!

I'm really not a fan of boxing and thought I wouldn't be liking this episode too much. But the twist at the end of the episode taught me otherwise. And I definitely did not see that coming! I thought it fun and surprising and it turned a 5 Star rating, which I originally had in mind, to a 9.

Also, the Crypt Keeper did a good job making me giggle along with him. I would buy that christmas songs CD of his!
