The marriage of O'Brien to Keiko was a result of the desire by writers to portray a shipboard wedding. The producers wanted such a wedding to involve an established character, and even toyed with the idea of Picard becoming permanently married. They decided instead for the marriage to include a more peripheral character, with O'Brien seen as filling such a role. Keiko was created for the episode, and was originally developed as Wesley's replacement in the Conn position.
The first episode to feature Data's cat, Spot, although (s)he is not named until later. Also, (s)he is a brown, long haired cat, whereas in all subsequent episodes, Spot becomes an orange tabby. This running gag of Data's character was trying for Brent Spiner, who claims to hate cats.
Debut appearance of the character of Keiko Ishikawa-O'Brien played by Rosalind Chao. Keiko would become a semi-regular character on both TNG and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993).
Gates McFadden received double billing in the credits: 1) In the opening credits for her role as Chief Medical Officer Beverly Crusher. 2) In the closing credits as Choreographer.
