Fred Freiberger's original intention was to replace Season One's entire supporting cast. He didn't get his way entirely, as Zienia Merton and Anton Phillips were asked back as familiar faces, but without contracts (being paid as though they were "extras"). Nick Tate's popularity was brought to Freiberger's attention, so he was re-hired (with a contract) after the first eight scripts had already been written. Those episodes were then rewritten to include Carter, but after the second episode, The Exiles (1976), which only had Carter in a mere cameo capacity, Tate promised he'd walk away from the production unless his character had significant involvement in the scripts. When Tate read the script for "The Taybor", he discovered that Carter only had one or two lines in the scene with the moon buggy, and that was it. He then took his girlfriend on a skiing vacation and wasn't heard from for weeks. As a result, the character of Bill Fraser replaced Alan Carter in "The Taybor", as well as the next episode produced, Brian the Brain (1976).
Rita Webb (Maya's final transformation), Laraine Humphrys (Karen, who gets blinded in the Solarium) and Chai Lee (Anna Wong) had all put in multiple appearances on The Benny Hill Show (1969).
This episode confirms that the Moon is no longer in Earth's galaxy, but it's not explained whether it was the result of Black Sun (1975) or some other force.
Reportedly, guest star Willoughby Goddard was so enormous that costume designer Emma Porteous had to join two tape measures together in order to accurately ascertain his circumference.
Although it disappears from the Alphans' possession in the epilogue, the multi-sided diagram of the jump drive appears again in the equipment room in A Matter of Balance (1976).
