nice story, weak ending

This episode shows that cheap effects do work back then and with the right score it even gives you the feeling of the seventies. When the moonbase is in deep space they come across Triton. The planet do send some kind of orange light that enters into your brain and makes you do serve the planet Triton. The only thing you want to do is to go to Computer.

Of course an eagle is send towards the orange planet but the light makes it almost not possible to enter the atmosphere of the planet. But commander Koenig do wants to save Dr Helena who is also trapped by the light.

The way they did the effects were rather simple, some kaleidoscopic effect in a dark room using the lenseflair of the camera. It works but also shows how easy some effects could be. Maybe the ending is a bit weak because 'the eye' destroys itself.

The sort of nonsense episode that ultimately helped to kill this series!

Warning: Spoilers
Just recently, I began re-watching the "Space: 1999" episodes. I had seen them all as a kid and I guess a wave of nostalgia has overtaken me! So far, I have actually enjoyed the shows immensely, though midway through the first season, I can see the unevenness of the show. While some episodes are very good, there are some that are embarrassingly bad and this particular episode is a great example of the nonsense that helped to kill the show.

The show begins with a yellow glowing light taking over a disposable member of the crew. He begins quickly downloading information from the computer to a nearby probe (that at times looks like a breast, a brain and the sun all rolled up into one!!). When the humans try to stop him, he attacks them and then dies!! When an Eagle approaches, one more crew member dies! Then, Dr. Russell is bathed in the yellow light and becomes a disappearing zombie-robot! Ultimately, this huge yellow boobie-brain-sun is boarded by Koenig and all sorts of silly 70s hippie lights appear and silliness ensues until the boobie-brain-sun decides to blow up and end this god-awful show.

Little of the plot made sense, the special effects were terrible and there wasn't much about this one that would encourage the public to keep watching.

By the way, thanks A&E Video. While this was on disk #2 of the 17 disk set, this is actually show #18--meaning it should have been on disk #6! Almost none of the disks have the shows on in the proper order and so I am glad I rented this from Netflix and didn't buy it. Unfortunately, for another Anderson production, "UFO", I purchased the box set and like this one, they are all in a completely mixed up order! Great concern for the customers!

The Eye Around the Moon

*Plot and ending analyzed*

A strange object with a spherical brain that contains an eye at its center appears in orbit around the moon base. It takes control of one of the crew, who begins to tamper with the computer system.

He has developed immense strength and manhandles a few of the crew before dying.

The strange object with a spherical brain that contains an eye at its center, issues a warning that the base is under control of the "tritons".

This episode is a very eerie one and both the visual and audio effects are very good.

I especially liked the weird object with a spherical brain that contains an eye at its center. It reminded me of a bit of a horror element.

The ending was also interesting, for it is my interpretation that the Tritons were probably advanced creatures. The object with a spherical brain that contained an eye at its center was most likely a reconnaissance probe that was used also for offensive action. In the event of their extinction, the Tritons did not want the probe causing unnecessary destruction.

The Tritons in all probability, put in a fail-safe safety measure. That was why the probe exploded. It examined the space charts that were provided by the moon base team. And it accepted the "verifiable" and accurate results. Hence, it no longer served a purpose. A machine that operated on pure mathematical logic. Quite interesting.

A very good episode for those who also enjoy a little horror in their science fiction.
