Disclosing and Hiding Secrets
claudio_carvalho25 October 2006
While in the Bay Breeze hospital sharing the room with another patient, Edith Kirky dies. Vanessa Diaz is one of the nurses in charge of Edith, and sends her body to Fisher's Service. Her husband Federico finds a hot-dog in the throat of Edith, calls the police and Vanessa loses her job, accused of negligence. Nate and David are sued by the bargain hunter Catherine Collins (of "In Place of Anger") in US$ 500,000.00 because Nate showed her husband's corpse to her. They find that Mitzi Dalton Huntley is providing the lawyers and David tries to deal the lawsuit with the widow and has a great surprise. Ruth believes Claire is depressed, visits Gary Deitman and he suggests that Ruth herself is the depressed one. Keith's parents decide to take Taylor with them, and David convinces Keith to face his father. The codependent Ruth secretly pays the debt of US$ 87,000.00 of Nikolai with Yuri. Nate discloses the truth about the pregnancy of Lisa to Brenda, and his disturbed, dysfunctional and unstable girlfriend uses many drugs, recalls her twisted childhood and has sex simultaneously with two strangers. Rabbi Ari visits Nate and he tells her about his disease and the pregnancy of Lisa.

"The Liar and the Whore" is another great episode of "Six Feet Under", where the inner flaws in the personalities of many characters are approached: the codependency of Ruth; the insecurity of Claire with her artistic vein; the relationship of Keith and his brutal father; the doubts of Nate about his feelings; the actions of the deranged and twisted Brenda, probably the most interesting character of this series, and I am really curious to see where her sexual behavior will lead her. David seems to be the strongest and most positive character of "Six Feet Under". My vote is nine.

Good but some questionable plot points

Warning: Spoilers
I can't really get my head around the fact that Ruth didn't tell Nate what Brenda told her last episode. I assumed him telling her would have at least prompted the idea into her head that he found out about Brenda's antics but instead she acts clueless! I also found the whole 'Fisher & Sons is being sued for $500,000' dilemma to be solved a bit too quickly and in a way which I don't think should've necessarily solved the problem. Nevertheless, this episode had some really powerful and memorable moments (especially with Keith, Brenda and Claire) which is why I still enjoyed this episode.

Just Thinking About It Makes Me Cry Warning: Spoilers
Of all the movies, television shows, books and theater pieces I've seen in my 50+ years, this episode of Six Feet Under (my choice for greatest show of all time) affected me in a most profound way. I don't think I've ever cried as sadly for any other entertainment piece as I did at the very beginning of this episode. A young man is dying from pancreatic cancer. Another young man (Nate) promises to visit this dynamic, difficult and lonely dying patient each day for the remainder of his life. Nate walks in and finds the young man in distress. A brief exchange takes place, heart wrenching for it's genuine and honest feeling. The young man begins to gasp and cries out in fear and pain. Nate cradles him and tells him not to be afraid. The dying man says "there is no light"...."I'm afraid". The viewer (myself) broke down in sobs that lasted longer than the scene itself. Such honest writing and brilliant direction and acting make for riveting television. It's not easy to watch and yet I can't stop watching once I start. It's exhausting because it's emotional. It's everything great entertainment should be and almost never is. Six Feet Under is genius.
