- At the nuclear power plant, Homer prevents a meltdown through sheer luck. He is hailed as a hero, but fears being found out as being only lucky rather than brave or clever. Meanwhile, Bart's and Milhouse's friendship is strained when Mihouse's mother considers Bart to be a bad influence and orders Milhouse to stay away from him.
- While asleep at work, Homer soon finds himself staring down the business end of a nuclear meltdown. Unclear just what he has to do, Homer plays a game of 'eeny-meeny-miney-moe' with the buttons, and manages to randomly hit the button to avert the meltdown.
Homer is then hailed as a hero for averting the disaster, and is made employee of the month.
Meanwhile, Bart soon becomes upset that he was not invited to Milhouse's birthday party after Milhouse's mom called him a bad influence. Marge speaks to Milhouse's mom, and after seeing her son sad at the loss of one of his friends, relents and allows Bart to play with her son again.
Meanwhile, another Nuclear Plant has contacted Mr Burns, and wishes to have Homer give his workers a pep-talk regarding keeping calm during a crisis. Against his protestations, Homer gives the speech, but is interrupted when the other plant also comes close to suffering a meltdown.
When the plant's boss demands Homer 'do what he did before,' Homer plays the same game of 'Eeny-Meney-Miney-Moe,' and ends up hitting the right button again. Needless to say, the plant boss is incensed at Homer not staying cool at all but used a child's game to save everyone.
Homer is soon stripped of the title 'hero,' but his ability to do something stupid and come out on top causes the saying to 'pull a Homer' to catch on, eventually making its way into the dictionary.
