Jason Alexander stated in an interview that he was initially skeptical of the Season 4 story lines because he felt they began to shift from the original focus of the show. He felt that what made Seinfeld (1989) so great was that it focused on every day occurrences and was relatable to the average person. He added "How many people do you know that are friends with someone who was accused of murder?"

The line Jerry says in his sleep in the hotel room was told to him in real life by producer Frederick De Cordova after Seinfeld's excellent first performance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (1962) in 1981. After Johnny Carson gave Seinfeld the "A-OK" gesture following his successful set, De Cordova put his arm around Seinfeld as they walked backstage, and told him, "You know, it's so nice when it happens good."
